In boardrooms, strategy offsites, and investor summits, the conversation invariably turns to artificial intelligence. Will it take our jobs, supercharge our growth, or expose hidden risks we've never anticipated? Amid the hype, one truth emerges: in a world awash with machine-generated insights, the uniquely human ability to question, probe, and test assumptions—what we might call Skeptical Intelligence—could be our most indispensable asset.
Yet despite billions spent annually on leadership development, few executives can precisely define what it means to think skeptically, let alone how to develop it. To understand why Skeptical Intelligence deserves a seat alongside IQ and Emotional Intelligence, we need to revisit how these earlier concepts reshaped our understanding of human capability—and then explore what a third pillar might entail.
The Age of IQ
For much of the 20th century, intelligence meant only one thing: IQ. It was the gold standard, the quantifiable metric by which students were sorted, employees were promoted, and national rankings were compared.
The concept of general intelligence originated with Charles Spearman in 1904, who observed that individuals who performed well on one type of cognitive test tended to do well on others. This statistical correlation suggested a broad, underlying mental capacity. Alfred Binet in France and later Lewis Terman at Stanford created IQ tests that could numerically represent this capacity, leading to the IQ boom of the 20th century.
IQ proved remarkably good at predicting certain kinds of success: academic performance, logical problem-solving, and even long-term earnings. But by the 1980s, cracks began to appear. Why did some top scorers flounder in the real world while others with merely average IQs thrived?
The Rise of Emotional Intelligence
The first serious challenge came from Howard Gardner, whose 1983 book Frames of Mind introduced the theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner argued that musical, spatial, kinesthetic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal intelligences were just as real and valuable as linguistic or logical-mathematical skills. This pluralistic view was controversial but set the stage for even more focused alternatives.
In 1990, two psychologists, Peter Salovey and John Mayer, proposed the concept of Emotional Intelligence. They defined it as the ability to perceive, understand, manage, and use emotions effectively. In their view, emotions were not a distraction from rational thinking but a vital component of it.
But it was Daniel Goleman who truly ignited the global conversation. His 1995 bestseller Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ argued that self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills often trump raw cognitive horsepower in leadership and life. Goleman's work popularized the idea that a high EQ could distinguish great leaders from merely smart ones.
Corporations embraced the concept eagerly. Emotional intelligence trainings became standard fare in leadership programs at GE, IBM, and Goldman Sachs. Consulting firms created entire practices around measuring and developing EQ. And yet even with these advances, the dominant paradigm still focused on how well we feel and connect—not necessarily how well we question.
Enter Skeptical Intelligence
In the last few years, a new concern has emerged. As machine learning systems become capable of astonishing feats—drafting legal briefs, diagnosing diseases, predicting consumer churn—our natural tendency is to trust them. Algorithms, after all, seem less biased, less emotional, more data-driven than we are. But recent high-profile failures—facial recognition systems that couldn't recognize dark-skinned faces, loan algorithms that penalized women, language models that hallucinate references—have underscored that AI can be deeply flawed.
And these flaws are often subtle, buried inside complex statistical models that even their creators struggle to fully interpret. The result? The need for a new kind of human intelligence: the capacity to critically interrogate the outputs of sophisticated systems. This is where Skeptical Intelligence comes in.
Skeptical Intelligence is not the same as mere contrarianism or reflexive doubt. It is a disciplined approach to questioning that combines curiosity, critical thinking, epistemic humility (knowing what you don't know), and a toolkit for evaluating evidence. If IQ is about solving well-defined problems and EQ is about navigating social and emotional landscapes, Skeptical Intelligence is about resisting easy answers and probing beneath the surface—especially when powerful technologies tempt us to outsource our judgment.
We can draw on decades of research in critical thinking and cognitive psychology to sketch out its potential components. Scholars like Robert Ennis, Richard Paul, Rita McGrath, Eric Reis, and Linda Elder have long studied what it means to think critically. Their frameworks emphasize abilities such as:
In this sense, Skeptical Intelligence can be thought of as a disposition for critical thinking applied rigorously to the modern data and AI landscape.
Why We Need Skeptical Intelligence Now
Paradoxically, the better AI gets, the more tempting it is to disengage our skeptical faculties. Machine learning models often produce outputs accompanied by confidence scores or impressive-looking graphs, which can lull decision-makers into a false sense of certainty. A 2022 study by Harvard Business School found that managers were significantly more likely to accept flawed AI recommendations if they were presented with visually compelling dashboards—even when inconsistencies were apparent.
This is not merely a theoretical risk. Consider the 2020 incident when a widely used recruiting algorithm at a Fortune 500 company was found to downgrade resumes from women because the training data contained historical biases favoring male candidates. Or the series of fintech apps that misclassified minority borrowers as high-risk based on opaque clustering techniques. These failures happened not because executives were malicious or incompetent, but because they lacked sufficient Skeptical Intelligence to interrogate the models.
Warren Buffett famously said, 'It's good to learn from your mistakes. It's better to learn from other people's mistakes.' In the AI era, it's best to preempt mistakes altogether by cultivating a culture of healthy skepticism.
This does not mean ignoring AI insights. Rather, it means creating systems of 'trust but verify'. Leaders high in Skeptical Intelligence know how to ask pointed questions of data scientists and to challenge assumptions without falling into endless analysis paralysis.
The Practice of Skeptical Intelligence
Imagine a CFO reviewing an AI-driven forecast that predicts a 12% uptick in demand for a new product line. Instead of simply applauding or rubber-stamping the recommendation, the CFO trained in Skeptical Intelligence would ask:
Or picture a marketing VP using a generative AI tool to craft campaign messages. Someone with strong Skeptical Intelligence wouldn't just check grammar—they'd probe for embedded stereotypes, test multiple prompts for consistency, and cross-check factual assertions.
Skeptical Intelligence also means knowing when to consult outside experts, when to run pilot tests before full-scale rollouts, and when to keep a human in the loop for judgment calls that have ethical or reputational stakes.

How can today's companies cultivate this emerging form of intelligence?
Skeptical Intelligence as a Superpower
When historians look back at the early decades of the AI revolution, they may marvel at how readily humans deferred to machines—sometimes with spectacular results, sometimes with catastrophic consequences. The leaders who thrive will be those who balanced innovation with interrogation, speed with scrutiny.
IQ and EQ remain foundational. But Skeptical Intelligence—the disciplined, curious, humility-infused ability to question even the smartest systems—may prove to be the crown jewel of human capability in the algorithmic age.

Next month, FX will unveil its wildly ambitious, first-ever TV series take on the sci-fi franchise that has spawned eight other films across the past five decades. On the latest episode of the 'Daily Variety' podcast, Daniel D'Addario, Variety's chief correspondent, offers insights into his inside look at the making of 'Alien: Earth' that is featured as 's July 23 cover story. That's a testament to the strength of the writer-producer's vision for adapting 'Alien' as a TV series for the present day. D'Addario notes that Hawley is a famously prolific 'idea machine' who has the trust of FX leadership. That's important given all that FX has riding on 'Alien: Earth,' which has topped the budget of FX's previous most expensive series. 'He's a novelist. He's written and directed feature films, and he just has the ability to work through this IP world without having it feel like a crass brand extension. It's 'Alien,' but it is fundamentally a Noah Hawley show as well,' D'Addario says. Also featured in today's episode is a conversation with Adam B. Vary, Variety's senior entertainment writer, about what to expect from San Diego Comic Con, which begins on July 24 and is always a mile-marker for studios and networks. Vary also discusses his recent sit down with Marvel chief Kevin Feige, who delivered a candid assessment of the studio's recent struggles. Feige cited a startling statistic that illustrated how Marvel simply became overextended in recent years as it ramped up production to feed series and movies to Disney+, which has been an enormous priority for parent company Disney. From 2008 to 2019, Marvel produced about 50 total hours worth of film and TV content. In the last six years, Marvel has produced more than 120 hours. 'That massive increase in volume really diluted the brand, diluted their quality. At one point he said, for the first time, quantity trumped quality.' And, that's a pretty blunt assessment for what went wrong,' Vary says. As for Comic Con, Vary predicts it will be less of a launchpad than in the past as Marvel is not hosting its usual state-of-the-industry presentation (hence Feige's charm offensive with journalists), nor does DC Studios have a big presence this year. 'It's generally going to be a little bit of a quieter Comic Con,' Vary says. Another post confirmed that the flight controllers "confirmed capsule separation" about three minutes later, which means the crew experienced "weightlessness." "Crew Capsule apogee confirmed," Blue Origin wrote at 8:47 a.m., before confirming that the crew had "landed" mere minutes later. Another update stated that the aircraft reached touchdown at 8:53 a.m., after a total of 10 minutes. "Welcome back, NS-34 crew," the company wrote on social media. Blue Origin reported that the company "successfully completed its 14th human spaceflight" following the flight. Along with Sun, the crew included real estate investor Arvi Bahal, Turkish businessman Gökhan Erdem, meteorologist Deborah Martorell, educator Lionel Pitchford and entrepreneur J.D. Russell. Sun won a bid for his seat on the New Shepard in 2021. He bid $28 million for the seat, according to Bloomberg and The outlet reported that he was supposed to be on the landmark flight on July 20, 2021, in recognition of the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, but was unable to make the trip due to a scheduling conflict. "It was an honor to see so many nations represented on our flight today. The view of our fragile planet from space has a unifying effect on all who witness it, and I am always eager to see how our astronauts use this experience for the benefit of Earth," said Phil Joyce, Senior Vice President of Blue Origin, in a statement. Per Blue Origin's website, the New Shepard is a "fully reusable, suborbital rocket system built for human flight from the beginning." During the autonomous aircraft's 11-minute trip, those onboard pass the Kármán line into space. The crew experiences "several minutes of weightlessness and witnessing life-changing views of Earth." Singer Katy Perry, broadcast journalist Gayle King, philanthropist Lauren Sánchez, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn notably went to space on the New Shepard in April as part of its 31st launch. Sun reflected on his brief journey into space in an interview shared on his Instagram. "For this mission, I've waited for four years but we've finally delivered it. I really appreciate Mr. Bezos and his team for making this possible. And thank you dad and mom for bringing me to Earth," he said. "When I look at it from space, Earth is so small and that's our home. We definitely need to do whatever we can do to protect it," Sun added. The entrepreneur made headlines in November 2025 for buying viral artwork depicting a yellow banana duct-taped to a wall. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' is quickly losing steam in its second weekend, signaling the comic book adventure isn't connecting at the box office beyond the film's core demographic of superhero fans. After a healthy $117.6 million debut, 'The Fantastic Four' suffered a hefty 66% drop in its sophomore outing with $40 million from 4,125 theaters. Heading into the weekend, box office analysts anticipated a decline of 55% to 60% from its opening. This painful a fall is surprising because 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' has the benefit of positive reviews and word-of-mouth, as well as a clear runway in terms of competition. Three new movies opened nationwide but none were competing for the same audience as 'Fantastic Four.' Among new releases, Universal and DreamWorks Animation's heist comedy 'The Bad Guys 2' enjoyed the strongest start with $22.8 million from 3,852 venues. That's directly even with the first film, which opened to $23 million in 2022 at a time when cinemas were majorly struggling to recover from COVID and studios were barely releasing any movies. The original film eventually powered to $250 million worldwide. 'The Bad Guys 2,' which cost $80 million and follows a group of reformed criminals who relapse for one final con job, was embraced by audiences with an 'A' grade on CinemaScore exit polls. 'This is a good opening for an animation sequel,' says analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. 'With this kind of business, the movie is doing what it's supposed to do.' At No. 3, Paramount's slapstick comedy 'The Naked Gun' debuted to $17 million from 3,344 theaters, squarely in line with projections. It's a promising start given the dearth of theatrical comedies. Critics and moviegoers dug the film, in which Liam Neeson stars as bumbling L.A. detective Frank Drebin Jr. (son of the late Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin, his predecessor in the 'Naked Gun' trilogy) alongside Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser. 'The Naked Gun' scored an 'A-' grade on CinemaScore and boasts a 90% average on Rotten Tomatoes, both of which should bode well for the remainder of its theatrical run. Akiva Schaffer of the Lonely Island fame directed the film, which carries a $42 million price tag. This weekend's final newcomer, Neon's body-horror nightmare 'Together' landed in sixth place with $6.8 million over the traditional weekend and an encouraging $10.8 million during its first five days of release. Real-life husband and wife Dave Franco and Alison Brie star in 'Together' as a co-dependent couple who become frightningly close after a mysterious force causes horrific body changes. Audiences gave the film a 'C+' on CinemaScore, though that harsh a grade isn't surprising since they likely left the theater feeling very disturbed. In fact, Neon has been leaning into the on-screen trauma to promote the movie, offering free couple's therapy for partners who see 'Together' during opening weekend. Neon shelled out $17 million to buy the movie at Sundance, marking one of the richest deals in the festival's history. Elsewhere at the box office, 'Superman' descended to fourth place with $13.9 million in its fourth weekend of release. The Warner Bros. and DC Studios adaptation has generated $316.2 million domestically and $551.2 million globally to date. Universal's 'Jurassic World Rebirth' rounded out the top five with $8.4 million in its fifth weekend of release. The dinosaur epic, which rebooted the long-running property with Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali, has grossed $317 million in North America and $766 million globally.
