BJP reaffirms support to de-notified nomadic tribes in Andhra
Addressing tribal leaders, Madhav said only the Narendra Modi-led government has allocated a dedicated budget for these communities, which have been historically marginalised due to colonial-era policies.
He recalled that these tribes, despite participating in India's freedom struggle, were branded as criminals by the British in 1871, resulting in decades of persecution. Their liberation began on August 31, 1952, and gained momentum under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose commission highlighted the cultural significance of these communities.
'The commission clearly stated that India's rich cultural heritage owes much to these nomadic tribes,' Madhav said. Since 2014, the Modi government has prioritised their recognition and welfare, he added.
Highlighting local challenges, Madhav noted that many de-notified tribes in Andhra Pradesh still lack voting rights, contributing to their continued socio-economic struggles. He said the BJP has conducted studies to address this issue and is formulating plans to protect identity and dignity.
As part of the 75th Vimukti Diwas celebrations, Madhav announced a month-long series of 'Spoorthi' programmes across all districts, culminating in a grand event on August 30. BJP MLA Dr Parthasarathi, former IAS officer Dasari Srinivas Rao, State General Secretary Bitra Shivannarayana, and OBC Morcha State President Rongala Gopi Srinivas were also present.

Congress to observe Aug 5 as 'black day', demand J-K statehood restoration
The Congress will observe August 5 as a "black day" against the downgrading of Jammu and Kashmir from a state to a Union territory six years ago and will sit on a dharna to press for the restoration of statehood. On August 5, 2019, the Centre scrapped J&K's special status and bifurcated the state into two Union territories. The Congress is backed by the other members of the All Parties United Morcha, which was created with the aim of restoring statehood, for the protest on Wednesday. "The Congress party shall observe August 5 as a black day against the downgrading of the historical J&K state into a Union territory. All constituent members are fully supporting it together," chief spokesperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, Ravinder Sharma, told reporters here. He said that a peaceful sit-in will be organised by the Congress supported by All Parties United Morcha near the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh at Tawi bridge in Jammu to press for the early restoration of full statehood to J-K. Sharma appealed to all people and organisations of Jammu to support the dharna in a bid to force the BJP-led central government to grant statehood to J-K. "The Government of India should bring a bill in this session of Parliament, pass the bill, and restore statehood. This is the demand of all of us," he said. Blaming New Delhi for running the region with a "remote control", he said that the denial of statehood was weakening the democratic setup, and people are witnessing the "treatment" by the elected chief minister and the lieutenant governor's administration. The government had promised the people of Jammu and Kashmir the restoration of statehood, and they should fulfil it, the Congress leader said. The Supreme Court has also called for the restoration of statehood, he said, adding that the BJP and its government in New Delhi are "deceiving" people here. All district units of the Congress will also organise similar dharnas at their respective district headquarters and observe "black day" on Wednesday as part of "Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq", he said.

Cong workers protest outside Delhi Assembly over slum evictions
New Delhi: Thousands of Congress workers, led by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav, protested outside the Delhi Assembly on the first day of the monsoon session against the demolition of over 3,000 JJ clusters that displaced nearly 15,000 families. Recently, a series of demolition drives in areas like Wazirpur, Jailorwala Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Jangpura triggered strong reactions from the opposition. Yadav alleged the evictions were carried out by the BJP govt without prior notice or rehabilitation. "To protect the rights of slum dwellers, Congress workers will brave every challenge boldly and not be afraid of the dictatorial police of the BJP," Yadav said. Congress workers carrying placards clashed with police and paramilitary forces. Yadav was detained and taken to Sabzi Mandi Police Station. He pointed out that during its tenure, the Congress built in-situ flats in areas such as Bhoomiheen Camp, Jailorwala Bagh, and Katputli Colony. He said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the displaced families and raised the issue in Parliament, following which the Delhi govt announced a halt to demolitions. Chief minister Rekha Gupta had earlier stated that the current govt has allotted Rs 700 crore for the development of slum areas under the 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makan' scheme.

IPFT to celebrate Tipraland Demand Day on Aug 23
Agartala: Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the ruling BJP in the state govt, has declared Aug 23 as Tipraland Demand Day, reaffirming its push for the elevation of the Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) to a separate state with full autonomy. IPFT general secretary Swapan Debbarma emphasised that the demand for Tipraland is central to the party's ideology, which has been advocating for over 25 years for empowerment, direct central funding, and ADC autonomy. Despite its alliance with BJP, IPFT maintains its right to pursue independent political objectives, as outlined in their common minimum program, he said. Debbarma announced plans for a massive rally in the city to advocate for Tipraland under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution. The rally will culminate in the submission of a formal memorandum to the governor, urging intervention to address the issue.
