
Eight expert tips for growing a bumper strawberry crop this summer
The combination of warm days, cool nights, and record-breaking sunshine has led to one of the most bountiful early harvests in recent years.
While the Wimbledon Tennis Championships traditionally herald the peak of strawberry season, with approximately 200,000 portions of strawberries and cream enjoyed by attendees, there's a unique pleasure in savouring home-grown strawberries picked fresh.
Fortunately, growing your own strawberries isn't too tricky – even for beginners.
The weather makes a difference
'The weather has been very kind to all growers,' says Jim Floor, managing director of berry growers Hall Hunter. 'We had a very cold February and March, then from April onwards it's been sunny – and strawberries love sunshine.
'The nights have been quite cool and the perfect environment for strawberries is 20 degree days and 10 degree nights.'
Plenty of bees help
If you have a garden with plenty of plants which attract pollinators, such as open-flowered geum, iberis, cranesbill geraniums, lavender and heathers, you're likely to get better crops because the bees will pollinate the strawberry flowers.
For the biggest harvests…
You'll need plenty of space for a strawberry patch if you want a huge crop, and will need to plant numerous plants. Alternatively, you can grow strawberries in pots but because of the limited number of plants you can accommodate, your yield may be limited.
Many types produce new runners after flowering, which create new plantlets on their own.
You can also plant different varieties of strawberries to extend the season – summer-fruiting types, perpetual strawberries which produce a smaller quantity of fruit from summer until autumn, and Alpine, or wild, strawberries, which bear small crops of tiny berries spasmodically during summer.
Plug plants are a good bet and are available in garden centres and nurseries from late spring onwards, or alternatively you can buy bare-root plants, known as runners, which look like root clumps, in late summer or early autumn, and again in spring.
Plant in full sun or in polytunnels where they will be warm and won't become damp, or if outside a raised bed or grow bag is a good option, Floor suggests.
'I grow them in a hanging basket (at home) because they tend to do much better if they're not (at ground level) in the soil, where there are lots of pests and diseases.'
During the growing season, make sure they are fed and watered regularly. 'I would recommend a balanced multi-purpose liquid feed.
'If you want sweeter strawberries you might want to put more potassium in, but you need to be careful because any overfeeding of potassium, calcium or nitrogen could give you a problem.
' Calcium can burn the leaves, potassium could potentially kill the plants and (overfeeding with) nitrogen, you will get 100% leaves and no fruit.
Possible problems
Slugs are a threat, he warns. 'Last year because of the mild winter and the wet year the problem was slugs, particularly if you were growing strawberries in the ground.
'This year it's been about keeping everything irrigated. As long as the plants have plenty of water, they will do well.'
Birds may also feast on the fruits, so it would be wise to cover your strawberries with netting if you need to keep them at bay.
As the fruits emerge, place straw underneath them so the fruits don't brush against the ground and rot.
When are they ready to pick?
When they are evenly red, he says. 'They don't necessarily come off the stem quite easily. If the fruit comes off easily it may be over-ripe.'
After fruiting
'De-leaf the plants a little bit, getting rid of the debris and dead leaves, and there's no reason why they couldn't be kept for another year,' he suggests.
Good varieties
Strawberries which have received the RHS Award of Garden Merit include 'Hapil', which produces large red fruits and is lauded for its vigorous growth and is well-suited to light or drier soils and to containers; and the late season 'Florence' which has 'exceptional disease resistance' and whose large dark red fruits are produced in mid-July.

The unexpected reason this train company has slashed its services
Train services between London Waterloo and Devon have been halved by South Western Railway (SWR) due to unusually dry soil conditions along the route. SWR said it had "no alternative" but to cut the services. From 11 August, until further notice, there will be just one train every two hours between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids, down from one per hour. One train per hour will operate from London Waterloo to Yeovil Junction, Somerset, with journey times extended by about 25 minutes. The disruption stems from a lack of moisture in clay soil embankments, which has disturbed track levels and made it unsafe for trains to operate at full speed. This follows England's second driest spring on record, with summer rainfall across the UK also registering just below average. SWR said that the parched conditions had caused embankments between Gillingham in Dorset and Axminster in Devon to shrink. This shrinkage has disturbed the overlying track, necessitating a speed limit reduction from 85mph to 40mph across a 12-mile section of the line. SWR warned that dry conditions are 'set to continue', so further speed restrictions 'may be required'. Attempting to stabilise the track now would 'only provide a short-lived fix as the soil continues to move', it added. SWR chief operating officer Stuart Meek said: 'We are very sorry for the disruption that customers will experience due to this change, as we know just how important the West of England line is to the communities it serves. 'We have not taken this decision lightly and we recognise the impact that it will have on customers west of Yeovil in particular. 'However, to continue operating a safe and reliable service, we have no alternative but to introduce a reduced timetable. 'We always aim to minimise disruption and so, together with our colleagues at Network Rail, we will carefully monitor train performance and work hard to give customers a service that they can rely on. 'We encourage customers to plan ahead via our website and allow extra time to complete their journeys.' Network Rail operations director Tom Desmond said: 'The safety of our customers is our number one priority, which is why we must impose these speed restrictions between Gillingham and Axminster. 'We want to give customers the longest notice possible of timetable changes, and following a comprehensive analysis of ground and track conditions, we know that we must make changes in the next two weeks. 'We have worked closely with our colleagues at South Western Railway to understand the impact of the speed restrictions, and we will regularly review conditions in order to restore the normal timetable as soon as possible.' The amended timetable will restore services to Crewkerne, Somerset which has been served by buses since 28 July because of dried out embankments.

Experts express concern for future of Health Survey for England
Public health experts have expressed concern for the future of a 'vital' health survey, after the government said it would no longer be run by NHS England. The Health Survey for England, launched in 1991, is an annual study that collects data from about 8,000 adults and 2,000 children across the country, through face-to-face interviews and questionnaires. It gathers data on a range of important health metrics such as height and weight, smoking and alcohol use, with public experts describing it as an 'arterial' source of data due it being nationally representative and high quality. At a briefing in July by the UK Data Service, the government said the 2025 edition would be the last one because 'NHS England will not be prioritising population health surveys in its long-term strategic work plan'. The government has said that the survey is not being stood down, but will no longer be run by NHS England. However, details regarding how the survey will be run have not yet been revealed as the government says it is currently exploring alternative ways of collecting the same information as the health survey. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own individual health surveys. Veena Raleigh, a senior fellow at the King's Fund, said the survey was an 'arterial source of information on the health of our population' that has been instrumental in shaping and monitoring health services and policy decisions across England, including blood pressure, smoking and obesity. She said: 'Without the Health Survey for England, we would not have invaluable data on current trends in population health and whether the NHS is reaching and treating people and communities who are most at risk of poor health. 'At The King's Fund the survey data has enabled us to assess trends and inequalities in the proportion of people who have multiple risk factors such as smoking, poor diet and excess alcohol use. The research would not have been possible without the Health Survey for England data.' Prof Kamila Hawthorne, the chair of the Royal College of GPs, said the survey would need to be 'replaced with something similar, generating the vital information that organisations across healthcare need to monitor changes in public health'. A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: 'The Health Survey for England is not being stood down. We are working closely with NHS England and the Office for National Statistics to explore alternative improved approaches to ensure there is essential health monitoring beyond 2025. 'We will ensure that decision-makers continue to have access to high-quality population health data that improves health outcomes across England.'

Mango out to conquer UK with teen range
The Spanish clothing retailer Mango is targeting British teenagers as its next engine of growth after spotting a gap in the market. The company, best known for its womenswear, is planning to open more standalone stores for 11 to 15-year-olds in the UK after a sharp rise in sales of its teen collection. Mango Teen sales in the UK rose 400 per cent in the first half of the year compared with the same period last year, driven by shop openings and increased demand. While Shein and New Look are among the few fashion brands targeting teenagers in the UK, Mango believes many high street rivals are missing the mark. Zara's children's line and H&M's kidswear typically stop at age 14 and are not explicitly aimed at teenagers. Mango Teen was launched in 2021 to bridge the gap between the company's children's and adult ranges. The first standalone Mango Teen store opened in Spain in 2022. Since then, the company's Kids and Teen categories have delivered double-digit turnover growth. In June 2024, Mango launched its first UK Teen store on Carnaby Street in London. Like-for-like sales in the store for the second quarter of this year were up 110 per cent against the first quarter. Its third UK Teen store opened in Glasgow on August 1, with more to follow, although the company has not confirmed how many or in what locations. The teen-focused rollout is part of a broader global expansion strategy. Mango operates more than 40 standalone Teen stores and has a presence in 95 markets worldwide. 'We see a clear gap in the market for youthful, contemporary and good quality fashion for teens at a reasonable price point,' Berta Moral, global director of kids and teen at Mango, said. She said the company saw 'real potential' in the UK for Mango's designs with a 'fresh, youthful and Mediterranean vibe'. In the UK, Mango has overtaken rival Spanish brand Zara in the race for bricks-and-mortar dominance, with more than 70 stores across Britain compared with Zara's 60. Globally, Mango operates more than 2,700 stores and has been accelerating its international footprint. The retailer reported strong full-year results for 2024, with turnover up 7.6 per cent to €3.3 billion. International markets contributed 78 per cent of total revenue. Net profit rose 27 per cent to €219 million, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation climbed 19 per cent to €636 million.
