First look: Peek inside the newly renovated Delacorte Theater in Central Park
At a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Public's Oskar Eustis described the Delacorte as "a palace for the people—and the people deserve the best." The renovation focused on improving accessibility and modernizing the space for artists and audiences. Luis Miranda, The Public's board chairman, credited a $42 million investment from local government leaders to help make it possible.
Before even stepping foot inside, the theater's new curb appeal is obvious. Beautiful redwood reclaimed from decommissioned NYC water towers across the five boroughs has replaced the former gray siding, offering the added bonus of a fresh aroma.
Accessibility was a major priority for the update, and every part of the space is now accessible, from the seating to the light booth to the dressing rooms. Two new gates offer accessibly entry, and the number of ADA seats has more than doubled. Plus, the renovation added additional ramps, lifts, and elevators for artists and crew.

"The new Delacorte experience is better for the audience. It's better for the performers, designers, crew, staff, and most importantly, we are now ready for what comes next. We're here for the next generation," said Arielle Tepper, former board chair at The Public. "It is about making sure that everyone feels welcome here at the Delacorte, no matter who they are, where they're from, or if they've never seen live theater before."
And theatergoers, women in particular, will be delighted by the newly updated bathrooms. The renovation doubled the amount of restroom facilities for women, solving bottlenecks that existed during intermission.

While the renovation is about looking to the future, Eustis took a moment to reflect on the past. He remembered the legacy of Joe Papp, who faced great obstacles to keep his free New York Shakespeare Festival running, eventually evolving into the free Shakespeare in the Park we know today. His conviction, Eustis said, was that "Shakespeare should belong to everybody." He insisted upon casting shows to look like the demographic makeup of the city itself.
"The culture belongs to everybody and that to even charge a nickel for it, to put that much of an economic barrier, would be to fundamentally contradict the basic idea of the Shakespeare Festival, which is that the culture is everybody's property," Eustis said.
The Delacorte Theater officially opened in Central Park on June 18, 1962, with The Merchant of Venice, directed by Papp and Gladys Vaughan and featuring George C. Scott as Shylock. In the years since, more than 150 productions have been presented for free at The Delacorte, featuring stars such as James Earl Jones (in Othello, 1964), Meryl Streep (The Taming of the Shrew, 1978); Denzel Washington (Richard III in 1990), Anne Hathaway (Twelfth Night, 2009); Al Pacino (The Merchant of Venice, 2010); and many more.
Though theatrical performances won't begin for a few weeks, the audience at today's ribbon cutting was treated to Shakespeare readings by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Peter Dinklage, Lupita Nyong'o, and Sandra Oh—all of whom will perform in this year's showing of Twelfth Night. This year's free series runs from August 7 through September 14.
New York City's Comptroller Brad Lander was so inspired by the Shakespeare spirit, he recited a sonnet he wrote for the occasion. As he read:
"What a time to reopen this stage with enemies of culture on the prowl,
pitting fear and faux populist rage against empathy and attack most foul.
Our tyrant locks up immigrants, comptrollers too, and sows chaos, no matter the cost.
So what's a public theater to do to ensure that our democracy is not lost?
Happily, one answer is right here in new seats and stage for all New York to see,
our hearts and our democracy restored through Shakespeare that uplifts us all for free."

The price of this one however is on the last slide and NOT a typo." The post recieved many likes and comments from excited shoppers. The B&M mirror looks almost identical to the Laura Ashley Natural Wooden Wavy Pine Rectangular Wall Mirror from Next. The two feature matching wavy frames in a similar shade and size. The B&M mirror, which is not yet listed on the retailer's website, is priced at £10, while Next's comes in at £110. This means shoppers could save £100 by opting for the budget alternative.

The stand-up and TV star, who recently wrapped up her epic Battleaxe tour around the UK, showed off her bump in a video posted on her Instagram story this morning and said she's sure she knows what she's having. Katherine confirmed her pregnancy with her fourth child on her podcast in June this year and has since been keeping fans updated with the odd snippet of information on her podcast and social media. As she stood on a dark walnut brown wood step in her London home, she modelled a casual outfit consisting of a pair of grey tracksuit bottoms, a white T-shirt, in which her blossoming bump was peaking out of the bottom, and a plaid shirt. As she leaned on her bannister and filmed herself, Katherine told the camera: "I could not have picked a better time to get a full length mirror in the corridor. Just got me feeling great..." 'There's a long road ahead, but a channel of communication is now open for the first time in years,' one insider suggested. 'There was no formal agenda, just casual drinks. There were things both sides wanted to talk about.' Harry was represented by Meredith Maines, his chief communications officer and head of his household in Montecito, California, who flew in from Los Angeles. She met Tobyn Andreae, the King's communications secretary, at the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) a three-minute walk from Clarence House, the monarch's London residence. Also present was Liam Maguire, who runs the Sussexes' PR team in the UK. It was Ms Maines who organised Harry's BBC interview in May in which he said he 'would love a reconciliation' with the Royal Family, but that the King 'won't speak to me because of this security stuff'. The Duke was referring to the removal of his automatic police security detail in Britain, which he called an 'old-fashioned establishment stitch-up' and suggested his father could have resolved the situation. He admitted that he didn't expect forgiveness across the board from his family, saying, 'Of course, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book. Of course, they will never forgive me for… lots of things.' Despite this, he expressed a clear desire for a rapprochement, saying, 'I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point in continuing to fight any more.' Charles was also still said to be hopeful of a reunion with his younger son and that he might yet build a relationship with his two grandchildren, six-year-old Prince Archie and four-year-old Princess Lilibet. Ms Maines, wearing a sleeveless cream jacket and high heels and carrying a black Louis Vuitton bag, arrived at the club by taxi with Mr Maguire at 3.50pm. Mr Andreae turned up several minutes later carrying a gift from Berry Bros & Rudd, the wine and spirits merchant which has been supplying the Royal Family since 1760. The trio were later seen chatting over drinks in the 26C (78F) sunshine on the club's first-floor garden terrace overlooking Green Park. After ten minutes they got up and resumed their discussions inside. The source said the summit was only the 'first step towards reconciliation between Harry and his father, but at least it is a step in the right direction. 'Everyone just wants to move on and move forward now. It was finally the right time for the two sides to talk.' The Windsor feud began shortly after Harry and Meghan moved to California and gave an explosive interview to US chat show queen Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. The Duchess described approaching Harry and the Royal Family, seeking help with suicidal thoughts during her pregnancy. 'I just didn't want to be alive any more,' she said. 'And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought. And I remember – I remember how he [Harry] just cradled me.' Meghan said she asked a senior royal about the possibility of seeking help and was told that would not be possible because it 'wouldn't be good for the institution'. Harry further claimed that while his wife was pregnant, a member of his family had expressed 'concerns' to him about the baby's skin colour. Insiders said Harry's memoir, Spare, was the final straw for his brother William, as it made public claims such as a physical fight the pair are said to have had over Harry's relationship with Meghan. The Royal Family responded with expressions of empathy, couched with the now infamous line: 'Recollections may vary.' Earlier this year, it was also revealed that the Duke of Sussex had decided to extend an olive branch to the Royal Family by inviting them to the 2027 Invictus Games, which will be held in Birmingham. He is said to be hopeful that the event could spell the end of his self-imposed exile in California, and mark a return to the royal fold. Meanwhile there are still hurdles to overcome with Harry's Home Office battle over security. After stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Harry lost his automatic taxpayer-funded police protection, but has fiercely contested the decision, insisting that he and his family are at risk whenever they visit the UK. He maintains that if his father would only 'step out of the way' he could get his police protection back. In the BBC interview, Harry accused his father of standing in the way of his fight for protection. The issue became emblematic of the deep mistrust that now defines his relationship with his father and the wider royal household –but which may now, finally, be beginning to thaw. Neither Buckingham Palace nor the Sussex's representatives would comment on the meeting.
