'Why Have Rules?': FIFA Slammed For Breaking Half-Time Limit At Club World Cup Final

The Club World Cup final witnessed an extended half-time show with musical performances which ran past the stipulated 15-minute timeframe.
FIFA came under scrutiny for breaching the laws of the game during the Club World Cup final on Sunday, July 13. As English Premier League giants Chelsea took on Champions League title holders Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey, Martyn Ziegler, chief sports reporter at The Times, questioned how tournament organisers failed to maintain the 15-minute half-time break, allowing a 24-minute glitzy midway show to continue.
According to football's Law about the Duration of the Match, 'Players are entitled to an interval at half-time, not exceeding 15 minutes; a short drinks break (which should not exceed one minute) is permitted at the interval of half-time in extra time." The Club World Cup final witnessed an extended celebration with musical performances and cameras regularly glancing at FIFA President Gianni Infantino and US President Donald Trump. The show continued for 24 minutes, raising eyebrows as FIFA allowed a breach of its laws.
'What is the point of FIFA saying it upholds the Laws of the Game when it ignores maximum 15-min half-time break so Infantino can have this 24-min show??" wrote Ziegler on Twitter as attention shifted away from the on-field action where Chelsea pulled off a massive 3-0 triumph against PSG.

While the referee has some discretion,15 minutes is marked as the maximum time duration for a half-time halt during a football match. FIFA adopts its laws from the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which requires a six-to-two majority vote to make any changes. Notably, four of those votes are held by FIFA representatives, with one apiece reserved for the national football associations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
A nine-minute delay in resumption may seem trivial, but FIFA's inability to adhere to the law and prioritising frenzy amidst a game of such nature raises questions about the body and its commitment and planning for hosting a fair Club World Cup. Despite the extended pause, Chelsea retained its great momentum and rode on Cole Palmer's magnificent twin strikes to clinch a defiant 3-0 victory over the tournament favourites.

'Ben Stokes Behaved Like Spoiled Kid': Sanjay Manjrekar Schools Jonathan Trott After Handshake Controversy

Ben Stokes expressing his frustration at India not taking his offer of a draw has been criticised. Was Ben Stokes' reaction justified after India turned down his offer for draw on Sunday? The England Test captain is facing the heat for indulging in an animated discussion with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar after his handshake for a draw was refused with the 4th Test all but confirmed to end in a draw at Old Trafford. Jadeja and Sundar were inching closer to their respective hundreds when the offer was made but they decided to bat on. Stokes then called-up part-timers Harry Brook and Joe Root presumably to give his first-choice bowlers some rest given the way the contest was headed to. The two Indian batters duly reached their centuries before shaking hands with the English players to confirm the Test has ended in a draw. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar criticised Stokes for behaving like a 'spoiled kid". 'Ben Stokes behaved like a spoiled kid," Sanjay Manjrekar said during a post-match show on JioHotstar. Former England batter Jonathan Trott, who was also part of the show, defended the response. 'Common practice in England, and Ben Stokes' mentality is that there are no personal milestones. If you get offered to end game earlier, it's taken," Trott said. Manjrekar was quick to remind his fellow panelist that the world doesn't follow English way of cricket. 'Trott comes from a different culture. Whole world doesn't play as per English way of cricket," he said. Trott may have sided with Stokes but former England captain Nasser Hussain didn't have any problem with India continuing despite the offer. 'I didn't have a problem with it. England seemed to have a problem with it. They were a bit tired, tired bowlers so they wanted to get off but two lads worked hard to get to 80s and 90s and they wanted to get Test match hundreds," Hussain said on Sky Sports. 'Stokes didn't have to bowl Brook and look silly at the end. We make far too much of these things. They played well and all credit to India," he added. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Bumrah playing fifth Test would be great deal for us, says Gill

Manchester, Jul 28 (PTI) India captain Shubman Gill said it would be a big deal for the team if pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah manages to play series-deciding fifth Test despite the team's original plan to restrict him to three matches. Bumrah, who suffered a stress reaction earlier in the year, was initially scheduled to feature in only three Tests on the long England tour to manage his workload and prevent further injuries. He missed the second Test at Edgbaston but played in the other three. With England leading the series 2-1 after a draw in Manchester, India must win at The Oval to level the five-match contest. 'If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told BBC's 'Test Match Special'. 'If he's not playing, I still think we have the right kind of bowling attack," Gill added. Bumrah bowled 33 overs in the fourth Test at Old Trafford and has approximately four and a half days to recover for the final match, which begins on July 31. He has bowled 119.4 overs in five innings across three Test matches so far, which is roughly 24 overs per innings. However, given that he is India's joint highest wicket-taker in the series with 14 scalps (with Mohd Siraj), including two five-wicket hauls from three matches, the team may be tempted to bring him back for the finale. 'Even if he isn't going to play, you wouldn't tell people now, just on a purely tactical basis," Cook said. 'They made a mistake at the beginning of the series saying he could only play three, because you get thrown into a situation like now where the series is still on the line. 'If he's not fit to play, not playing is the right decision," he added. India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that all fast bowlers are available for selection ahead of the Oval Test and didn't rule out Bumrah featuring in a fourth match. 'All the fast bowlers are there. There is no injury scare," Gambhir asserted on Sunday. 'We haven't had any conversation around the combination for the last Test. 'No decision has been made on whether Jasprit Bumrah will play or not. Ultimately, whoever plays, they will try and do the job for the country," he added. After the Lord's Test, India suffered a spate of setbacks, with Arshdeep Singh nursing a blow to his bowling hand, Akash Deep ruled out with a groin issue, and Mohammed Siraj battling general fatigue. All-rounder Nitesh Kumar Reddy was also ruled out of the series. As a result, India had to fly in reinforcements from home. Anshul Kamboj joined the squad and was preferred over Prasidh Krishna in the playing XI.
