Padres trade pickup shares hilarious story behind walk-off hit over Red Sox
The San Diego Padres had one of the best trade deadlines of any team in baseball this season. A.J. Preller swung five trades, and while Mason Miller was the biggest addition, one of his best was part of a deal with the Baltimore Orioles in Ramon Laureano.
In their series against the Boston Red Sox, Laureano had a signature Padres moment when he hit a walk-off single to left field, scoring Xander Bogaerts in extra innings to even the series.
After the game, Laureano was interviewed about his walk-off hit, which was shared on Tirtter/X by @23cmcpadres. The story behind how Laureano got his walk-off hit is hilarious, as the new trade pickup, in his words, missed a sign before his hit.
"I was thinking to actually hit a homer," Laureano said deadpan, and then I'm like 'I guess they're going to give me the bunt sign,' and I don't know the signs, and then it's like, let's chop it down."
Laureano went into the at-bat with runners at first and second with no-outs in the 10th inning. A double-play would be disastrous, so instead, the Padres could have him bunt the runners over and have second and third with only one out.

But, as Laureano mentions, he didn't get the sign, as he's only been in San Diego for a little over a week, and in turn, he decided to swing. He did "chop it down," as he hit a chopper which bounced over the third baseman's head into left field.
Bogaerts was flying, scoring from second, and securing the walk-off win for the Padres. The win kept the Padres just three games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West, which is huge with a series against the Dodgers the following weekend.
But, such a walk-off nearly didn't happen, as Laureano, fortunately, missed the sign to bunt. Instead of a sacrifice bunt to put the Padres in a solid position to win, he instead chopped a single into left field, walking off the red-hot Red Sox.
What makes the comments from Laureano so hilarious is his deadpan delivery. It's hard to make out whether he's joking or being serious. If he did miss the sign and didn't bunt, it might not be a bad idea to never teach him the bunt sign if this is how he's going to hit.

Howard scores 25 as Dream beat Storm for their sixth straight win

Lowe, Caminero hit 2-run homers in the Rays' 8-2 victory over the Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero hit two-run home runs, Drew Rasmussen threw six innings and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Athletics 8-2 on Wednesday night. Lowe's second-inning home run off J.T. Ginn (2-5) — his 24th of the season — made it 6-0. Caminero homered in the ninth. Rasmussen (10-5) reached double-digit wins for the second time in his career, but saw his AL-best scoreless streak end at 17 1/3 innings when Lawrence Butler hit a two-run homer in the third. It was the first extra-base hit allowed by Rasmussen in his last four starts. Caminero, Josh Lowe, and Jake Mangum each had RBIs in the top of the first, and Mangum scored on a throwing error. Ginn allowed six hits and six runs — five earned — in two innings. Key moment Lowe's two-run homer to left center extended the Rays' lead. Yankees 1B Paul Goldschmidt has a right knee sprain and may go on IL
NEW YORK (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt has a low-grade right knee sprain and the New York Yankees may place the veteran first baseman on the injured list ahead of his return to St. Louis this weekend. The Yankees will evaluate Goldschmidt during their day off and will decide before Friday's game against the Cardinals if he will be placed on the IL. 'He's dealing with something so we'll see if it's an IL situation,' manager Aaron Boone said after Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Minnesota. 'He was pretty sore last night and this morning. Feels like he's doing quite a bit better right now so we'll see.' Goldschmidt was injured chasing down a foul pop by Byron Buxton in the third inning of Tuesday's 9-1 victory. Goldschmidt overran the ball along the dirt track near the Yankee dugout and slipped before making the catch on the grass while slightly falling down. 'When I kind of overran it and dove back, hit my knee on the ground I guess,' Goldschmidt said. 'I felt that it was sore yesterday but obviously was able to play through it.'
