Uddhav Thackeray Meets Devendra Fadnavis Day After "Crossing Over" Joke
Allies-turned-adversaries Uddhav Thackeray and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met today at the Maharashtra assembly - the facetime between the two coming after months. While the ostensible reason was a discussion about the post of the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, the meeting assumed raised eyebrows in view of Mr Fadnavis's "join us" comment yesterday which Mr Thackeray was quick to write off as a "joke".
The 20-minute meeting was held in the ante-chamber of Vidhan Parishad Chairman Ram Shinde at Vidhan Bhavan.
Sources said Mr Thackeray had demanded that the Speaker allow the post of the Leader of Opposition, for which the name of Bhaskar Jadhav was recommended in the last session. This is the second session of the assembly since the formation of Mahayuti government.
Mr Jadhav has the consensus of the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi but the Speaker, Rahul Narvekar, has not taken any decision in this regard.
The Chief Minister, sources said, had responded that allowing a Leader of the Opposition is the sole prerogative of the Speaker
Aaditya Thackeray was also present for the meeting during which the three language policy was also discussed, sources said.
Mr Thackeray also presented a book titled "Why Hindi should not be imposed" to the Chief Minister, which is a compilation of articles written by several editors in Maharashtra.
Mr Fadnavis accepted the book, but suggested that Mr Thackeray submit a copy to Narendra Jadhav, the head of the committee formed to review three language policy decision.
The meeting comes a day after the Chief Minister sparked much merriment in the state assembly with his public invitation to Uddhav Thackeray to cross over to the ruling alliance, sparking massive speculation.
Speaking during the during the farewell ceremony of Ambadas Danve, Leader of Opposition and a member of Mr Thackeray's faction of the Shiv Sena, Mr Fadnavis - addressing Mr Thackeray who was also in the House - said: "Look Uddhav-ji, there is no scope of (our) going there (in the opposition) till 2029... But if you want to come over here, then consider it... it depends on you... it can be considered".
The Thackeray faction has always treated any talk to getting back with the BJP with disdain. Mr Thackeray later said these things are said as a joke and should be taken as such.

‘Sajnur tortured, coerced': Neighbours reject cop claim
1 2 Malda: Neighbours and relatives of Moktar Khan and his wife, Sajnur Parveen, on Wednesday rejected the Delhi Police's claim that Sajnur fabricated the allegation of torture. Back home in Chanchal lives Moktar's only sister, Muktari. The stark poverty in the area is palpable, with almost every household having one or two members working in another state, most commonly in Haryana or Delhi. Following the viral circulation of the alleged torture of Sajnur and her child, after a social media post by chief minister Mamata Banerjee , police visited the house, where only Muktari was present to receive them. Responding to the Delhi police's assertion that no torture occurred, Muktari said: "Does a criminal concede his crime? My brother himself told me that in his absence, my sister-in-law with her child was taken to the police station and roughed up. The child was thrown on the floor and he was injured. They were only released after paying Rs 25,000. KMC suspends 3 officials in Rs85L drainage scam claim
Kolhapur: Civic administrator K Manjulekshmi has suspended three Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials following allegations of their involvement in an Rs85 lakh scam related to drainage pipe laying work in the Badbade Mala area of Kasba Bawda. The suspensions come after former KMC corporator and Shiv Sena district coordinator Satyajit alias Nana Kadam on July 21 alleged that officials and a contractor colluded to submit fraudulent bills for uncompleted development work. Manjulekshmi has also formed a committee, comprising additional commissioner Shilpa Darekar and city engineer Ramesh Maskar, to investigate the matter thoroughly and submit a report within 48 hours. According to Kadam, the tender for laying drainage pipes was finalized in 2021 for an estimated cost of Rs2.4 crore. "A private contractor from the Kasba Bawda area was awarded the contract with an 18-month deadline. While the contractor submitted bills in five stages and received payment for four, a "fake Measurement Book (MB)" was prepared for the fifth bill without the completion of the remaining work. This allegedly led to the KMC disbursing approximately Rs85 lakh to the contractor based on these fraudulent documents," Kadam said. Replying to these allegations, the contractor concerned on July 26, via email, wrote to the chief minister, KMC administrator, district superintendent of police and the anti-corruption department, claiming that the bill has been taken as advance for the work done on the drainage pipeline. He also shared screenshots of the payments given to several KMC officials. After this, the KMC registered a case against the contractor, whereas an immediate inquiry was imposed against the civic officials concerned. The KMC, in a press release, said junior engineer, public works department assistant superintendent and senior clerk have been suspended. Manjulekshmi said, "The contractor has admitted in writing that he forged signatures. Therefore, Rs 85 lakh will be recovered from him. Also, criminal proceedings have been ordered in this case. The investigation of the officials, employees, bill approvers and others involved in this serious matter of fake bill approval and the entire process is ongoing."
