LSU baseball meets old Baton Rouge villian in College World Series final

USA Today19-06-2025
With a walk-off win against Arkansas on Wednesday, LSU baseball earned a berth in the College World Series finals.
The Tigers face a program on the rise and an old rival from nearly a decade ago in the best-of-three series. They'll need to enact revenge if they want to win their second national championship in three years.
LSU plays Coastal Carolina in the finals, which begin Saturday at 6 PM CT inside Charles Schwab Stadium in Omaha. The Chanticleers defeated Louisville 11-3 to punch their ticket to their second College World Series final.
Coast Carolina's last appearance came in 2016, when it won the program's first national championship. In that same NCAA Tournament, the Chanticleers defeated LSU in back-to-back games during the Baton Rouge Super Regional.
An unseeded team nationally, Coastal Carolina came into Alex Box Stadium and knocked off an LSU squad ranked inside the top-8 in front of one of the most intimidating crowds in the country. The Tigers suffered an 11-8 loss in game one, then in game two, suffered a defeat in walk-off fashion that ended their season.

Coastal Carolina defeated Florida, TCU and Arizona en route to hoisting the trophy in 2016. Current LSU head coach Jay Johnson held the same role at Arizona at the time.

Iowa football has QB that understands what 'it takes to win'

After acquiring the talents of quarterback Mark Gronowski through the offseason transfer portal from South Dakota State, Iowa football offensive coordinator Tim Lester praised the incoming senior signal-caller entering the 2025 campaign. At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, the Naperville, Ill. native, led South Dakota State for the last four seasons to a pair of FCS national championships in 2022 and 2023, while passing for a total of 10,308 yards and 93 touchdowns and rushing for 1,767 career rushing yards and 37 touchdowns. He would end up closing his tenure with the Jackrabbits tied for the title of the winningest quarterback in FCS history with a 49-6 record. With Gronowski now donning a Hawkeyes uniform, Lester hailed the quarterback's ability to find ways to uplift the team to victory, whether it's through his own plays or creating opportunities for teammates. "The biggest thing is that he just understands the things that it takes to win. The saying he always uses is, 'Have a positive football play.' He realizes that negative football plays change games, and he does an unbelievable job of taking the bad plays and turning them into less bad plays," Lester said. Lester also highlighted Gronowski's upbeat attitude as an indicator of his championship-level pedigree. "The other thing is, he is a super positive person. He is always upbeat. He's had mostly good practices, but he's had a couple missed throws or the first time running something where he missed something, but he just never gets down. He's very steady Eddy. It's very evident why he's won as much as he's won as you watch him go through the good and the bad, and how it never affects his mindset," Lester said. Given that the Big Ten possesses some of the most passionate fan bases in the nation, maintaining composure throughout the game is pivotal to the goal of earning a victory, especially on the road. While objectively, Gronowski's "on paper" quarterback skills and achievements are heralded as one of the best in the Kirk Ferentz era, there is still some skepticism amongst fans who have been led astray in years past by players who did not meet their expectations. While it is fair to hold those concerns, the true test for Gronowski will be how he performs against live competition outside the program, which Lester believes will finally kickstart the Hawkeyes' dominance fans have craved for years. Iowa opens its 2025 season on Aug. 30 against Albany from Kinnick Stadium with kickoff set for 5 p.m. CT and the game broadcast on FS1. CBS Sports projects which bowl game Notre Dame will play in later this year

As the season gets closer and closer to kickoff, we are starting to see where many believe that Notre Dame will end up playing the postseason. CBS Sports announced its 2025 college football bowl projections on Thursday, and they have the Irish returning to the College Football Playoff to face, wait for it, the LSU Tigers. This would be a matchup of the ages, as it would pit the former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, against the program that he believed didn't have what it takes to compete for a title. Well, his idea was proved wrong last year, as the Irish made it all the way to the CFP championship game, while his Tigers weren't even good enough to make the field. Brad Crawford, who compiled the list, has Notre Dame as the No. 5 seed and LSU as the last team to make the field. Not only would the Irish get a chance to knock off Kelly and the Tigers, but they'd have to come to South Bend to do it. If Notre Dame were to advance to the second-round, they'd be in line to take on No. 4 Ohio State, a team that the Irish sorely want to see again and defeat. They've faced the Buckeyes each of the last three seasons, only to fall each time. Crawford's other top three teams are Texas, Penn State and Clemson, as he sees each of the earning the coveted first-round bye. It didn't work out well for any of those teams in the first year of the 12-team CFP field, as every one of them lost their initial game. As for the rest of the field, he's got No. 9 Miami visiting No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 6 Alabama hosting No. 11 Boise State, and No. 7 Georgia taking on No. 10 Oregon in Athens. Back to the Irish, Crawford has them going 11-1 on the year, with the loss coming to either Texas A&M or the Hurricanes. It's pretty safe to say many in Irish Nation would take that result, with a return trip to the CFP following what would be a very successful regular season. 2025 AL Central Odds: Can Detroit End Division Title Drought?

Major League Baseball 2025 AL Central Odds: Can Detroit End Division Title Drought? Published Aug. 14, 2025 12:47 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link The AL Central division race is a crystal clear one for oddsmakers. Which squad is favored to win the AL Central this season? Here are the odds at DraftKings Sportsbook as of Aug. 14, as well as what to know about the division. AL Central winner Tigers: -1400 (bet $10 to win $10.71 total) Guardians: +1400 (bet $10 to win $150 total) Royals: +5000 (bet $10 to win $510 total) Twins: +20000 (bet $10 to win $2,010 total) What to know: The Guardians have claimed the most AL Central titles of all time with 12, followed by the Twins with nine. Over the last decade, Cleveland has captured five crowns — 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024 — including last season's 92-69 regular-season finish that ended in an ALCS loss to the Yankees. But 2025 hasn't been as kind to the Guardians, who sit well behind Detroit on the oddsboard and in the standings. The Tigers, who haven't won the division since 2014, lead the AL Central with a 70-52 record as of Aug. 14, 6.5 games better than Cleveland's 62-57. The Twins, fresh off a 2023 division title and ALDS appearance, are buried at the bottom of the board. Since the AL Central's creation in 1994, only two teams have gone on to win the World Series: the White Sox in 2005 and the Royals in 2015. This year, the White Sox have already been mathematically eliminated. ADVERTISEMENT This season, the Tigers have been led by reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, who is second in MLB in ERA (2.35) and third in strikeouts (187). Remaining matchups: Detroit and Cleveland still have six head-to-head games, and the Tigers open a four-game road series against the Twins on Thursday.
