CM Naidu stakes priority on tribal welfare, development in Andhra
Amaravati, Aug 9 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday said tribal welfare and the development of tribal areas remain top priorities of his government.
Speaking at Lagishapalli in Alluri Seetharama Raju district during World Tribal Day celebrations, Naidu laid foundation stones for several projects and inaugurated development initiatives aimed at improving facilities in Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) areas.
'Our goal is the welfare of tribals and the development of their areas. We have given special attention by appointing IAS officers in ITDAs," Naidu said, addressing the gathering.
He added that IAS officers have been posted in seven ITDAs to ensure efficient administration and emphasised that tribals can achieve miracles if given proper opportunities and support.
Naidu highlighted tourism and food processing as priority sectors and said funds are being released for school buildings and medical facilities.
He stressed that creating awareness among tribals is essential for sustained progress, while safeguarding their rights is crucial to improving their lives.
'In the agency areas, clean hills and kind-hearted people live. If I were to be reborn, I wish to be born here," he said, calling the agency a 'miracle of God." The TDP supremo also inspected stalls set up at the public meeting venue.
He inquired about the status of homestay projects in tribal areas and directed officials to ensure homestays provide a healthy environment that allows visitors to enjoy nature.
The CM unveiled the logo related to tribal products and sought information on their sales performance. He instructed that tribal products be given opportunities for international marketing.
Recalling that former Chief Minister N T Rama Rao was the first to prioritise tribal area development, Naidu said state progress is possible only if tribal communities grow and prosper equally.
During the World Tribal Day celebrations, Naidu tasted fresh Araku coffee at a stall and said, 'Nothing beats a cup of fresh Araku coffee, enjoyed where it's grown, in nature's heart, where tribal communities' efforts bring this unique brew to life," in a post on 'X'.
Earlier, Naidu extended 'World Tribal Day greetings" on 'X', and said the TDP-led government was working towards developing tribal and plains regions on an equal footing.
Besides highlighting development and welfare activities executed in tribal areas over the past year, Naidu said he would discuss future projects with tribals and announce decisions soon.
He further reiterated that the coalition government is 'committed to the steady development of tribal communities." PTI MS STH SSK ROH

Viral Video: Chilling footage shows 'execution' of medical staff at Syria hospital
A purported video clip shows, what appears to be, a few men in military garb killing a medical worker at a hospital in the city of Sweida in southern Syria. Mint could not verify the authenticity of the clip. The video was published by activist media collective Suwayda 24. The groups said the gunmen were from the Syrian military and security forces, news agency Associated Press reported. The incident was caught on security cameras installed at the hospital. The clip dated July 16 showed a group of armed men forcing staff in a Syrian hospital to kneel, and then they 'executed' one of them who resisted. In the video, which was widely shared on social media, a large group of people in scrubs could be seen kneeling on the floor in front of a group of armed men. A few moments later, the armed men grab a man and hit him on the head as if they are going to apprehend him. The man tries to resist by wrestling with one of the gunmen, before he is shot once with an assault rifle and then a second time by another person with a pistol. In the video, a man in a dark jumpsuit with 'Internal Security Forces' written appears to be guiding the men in camouflage into the hospital. Another security camera shows a tank stationed outside the facility, news agency Associated Press reported. A Syrian government official was quoted by Associated Press as saying that they could not immediately identify the attackers in the video, and are investigating the incident to try to figure out if they are government-affiliated personnel or gunmen from tribal groups. In a statement posted by state-run news agency SANA, Syria's Interior Ministry said Deputy Minister of Interior for Security Affairs Maj. Gen. Abdul Qader Al-Tahhan was assigned to oversee the investigation "to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and arrested as quickly as possible.' 'We condemn and denounce this act in the strongest terms, and we affirm that the perpetrators will be held accountable and brought to justice to receive their just punishment, regardless of their affiliations," the statement read. The government had last month set up a committee tasked with investigating attacks on civilians during the sectarian violence in the country's south, which is supposed to issue a report within three months. The video was shot amid the intense clashes between militias of the Druze minority community and armed tribal groups and government forces. The incident at the Sweida National Hospital exacerbates tensions between the Druze minority community and the Syrian government, after clashes in July between Druze and armed Bedouin groups targeted sectarian attacks against them. The violence has worsened ties between them and Syria's Islamist-led interim government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who hopes to assert full government control and disarm Druze factions. Though the fighting has largely calmed down, government forces have surrounded the southern city and the Druze have said that little aid is going into the battered city, calling it a siege.

CPM rallies for 42% BC quota, accuses Centre of delaying justice
Gadwal: CPM has demanded that the Centre pass a law in Parliament granting 42% reservations for Backward Classes and safeguard it under the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. Addressing a protest at the YSR statue in Darur mandal, CPM district committee member Uppair Narasimha accused the BJP-led government of deliberately stalling the BC Reservation Bill approved by the Telangana Assembly. He alleged that the BJP was using the issue of Muslim reservations to divert attention and mislead the public. He warned that without constitutional protection, BCs would remain dependent on upper-caste landlords and capitalists, and legislatures would continue to be dominated by the elite. Narasimha called on BCs to unite against 'landlord-dominated parties' that treat them as a vote bank. DCM slams Centre over minimal funding
Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday accused the BJP-led Union government of contributing a mere 20% in some stretches as low as 11% towards Bengaluru's Metro Yellow Line project, while the Karnataka government bore 80% of the cost. Speaking near his residence in Sadashivanagar, Shivakumar urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allocate at least Rs 1 lakh crore for the city's development. He said the state government had fully funded the land acquisition for the project, even though the Centre was supposed to provide 50% of the cost. 'Bengaluru is the second-highest tax-paying city in India, yet the grants we receive are disproportionately low,' he remarked. He pointed out that Ahmedabad receives 20% of tax revenue, while Bengaluru gets only 10%, and appealed for parity with other major cities. Stressing that his demand was not political buta genuine request for fair consideration, he said, 'Treat Bengaluru on par with the national capital.'Shivakumar criticised BJP MPs from Karnataka for failing to bring even Rs 10 of aid to the city or state. 'They boast of achievements, but the reality is they have done nothing. Only the Union Jal Shakti Minister has occasionally responded to our requests; otherwise, we have received nothing, not even for the NREGA scheme,' he alleged. He ridiculed BJP MPs for limiting their work to social media posts and photo opportunities. 'Posting on X and posing for photos is not achievement. Your conscience should guide you to bring funds for the people instead of playing politics,' he DCM claimed the Centre had ignored Karnataka entirely but maintained that the state had still invited the Prime Minister to inaugurate the project as a mark of respect. He highlighted that the Yellow Line benefits IT industry hubs, creating one lakh jobs annually in Bengaluru. Shivakumar challenged BJP leaders to release official figures of their contributions to the city's infrastructure, promising to release his own. He also thanked Infosys, Delta, Biocon, and other companies for funding Metro stations along the Yellow Line.
