‘Drug money trail': Punjab BJP chief Jakhar writes to CM, seeks probe to track down end beneficiaries
Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Monday wrote to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, seeking a probe under the supervision of the high court chief justice into the 'drug money trail' to track down its 'powerful end beneficiaries'.
'It is imperative to follow the money in the drug money trail, without which the exercise to root out drugs from Punjab is not only futile but a farce as well,' Jakhar said.
'Arresting thousands of drug addicts and small players will not make much difference. The elephant in the room has to be addressed,' he added.
Under the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign launched by the AAP government in Punjab three-and-a-half months back, more than 17,000 drug smugglers have been arrested, and large consignments of drugs have been seized.
'The flow of money has to be established to catch the big fish and arrest the end beneficiaries, be it politicians across party lines or officials. The drug cartels in Punjab cannot thrive without some or the other kind of patronage,' Jakhar said.
'I am writing to you with hope and caution to draw your attention towards the criticalness of an urgent probe under the direct supervision of Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu to track down the mighty and powerful end beneficiaries in the drug money trail, a primary source that has tormented Punjab,' the BJP leader said.
'This is important if your government wants to establish its credibility and resolve in its fight against drugs,' he added.
Jakhar urged Mann to write to the chief justice, seeking his intervention to conduct a 'time-bound' probe by a credible agency, or multiple agencies, under his supervision to uncover the end beneficiaries in the drug money trail.
Recovery of narcotics in Punjab goes into several thousand crores of rupees, 'which underlines the rot that exists', Jakhar said.
'The fortunes of several Punjab politicians have turned in the past few years, which cannot be dismissed as mere coincidence. It raises a lot of stench and suspicion on the source of funding,' he said.
The BJP leader also claimed that MLAs who rode bicycles now own luxury cars worth crores of rupees. 'Many have farmhouses spread over many acres. Since the quantum of money involved in the drug money trail is colossally huge, it reeks of money laundering, which can be probed by the Enforcement Directorate, or as deemed fit by the chief justice, since it could involve the high and mighty,' Jakhar said.
Ministers, MLAs, party presidents, party in-charges, and leaders of all hues should be part of the investigation, he added.
'As the state BJP president, I offer myself to be the first to be probed as a mark of my and my party's sincerity and earnestness,' Jakhar said.
'Not just drug money trail, the probe should also include in its scope the trail of illicit money from mining and sand mafia so that the guilty can be brought to book,' he added.

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Businessman Robert Vadra, who was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering probe, is not appearing before the agency on Tuesday, according to sources close to him. On June 12, Advocate Suman Jyoti Khaitan, counsel for businessman Robert Vadra addressed the media through a virtual press conference to clarify his client's absence from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) appearance in a money laundering case. Khaitan, speaking via Zoom, said recent media reports wrongly implied that Vadra was evading ED summons. 'These reports are misleading. Vadra developed flu-like symptoms and was advised to undergo a COVID-19 test, which he has taken. He is following all necessary health precautions,' Khaitan stated. Reaffirming Vadra's cooperation with the investigation, Khaitan said, 'He has willingly offered to join the probe through virtual mode and has previously submitted voluminous documentation to the ED.' The lawyer further stated that Vadra's prior appearances, including a three-day questioning in April in a separate money laundering case linked to a 2008 Haryana land deal. Vadra, the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, was summoned by the ED recently in connection with a case involving UK-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari. Sources said Vadra sought a deferment of the summons and will be given a new date for recording his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). In 2023, the ED filed a chargesheet alleging that Bhandari purchased and renovated a property at 12, Bryanston Square, London, on Vadra's instructions and with his financial support--an allegation Vadra strongly denies. He has dismissed the case as a 'political witch hunt' aimed at 'harassing him for political reasons.' The agency is also probing Vadra in another money laundering matter linked to land transactions in Bikaner, Rajasthan, where he and his mother have previously been questioned. (ANI)

"List your leaders who resigned over similar incidents": Siddaramaiah accuses BJP of politicising Bengaluru stampede
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 17 (ANI): Rejecting to the BJP's demands for his and his cabinet colleagues' resignations over the Bengaluru stampede, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday challenged State BJP leaders to first publish a list of their leaders who had resigned in similar past incidents. 'I request the BJP leaders in the state to first release a list of BJP leaders who resigned during similar incidents in the past before demanding our resignation,' Siddaramaiah said in a statement. He termed the stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium during the IPL victory celebration of RCB an 'unfortunate accident.' 'As a responsible government, we have taken accountability for the incident. We have suspended senior police officers, including the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, and transferred the Chief of the State Intelligence Department. My political secretary has also been relieved of his duties. Additionally, we have constituted a one-member commission led by retired Justice John Michael Cunha to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter,' the chief minister said. He said that despite taking 'such decisive' actions, the BJP leaders in the state continue to protest. 'This makes it evident that their motives are political rather than driven by genuine concern for the people. Politicising tragedies is not new to the BJP. It is ingrained in their DNA to pounce like vultures over every incident of death, accident, or violence. Even if an elephant dies in their courtyard, they have the habit of turning their attention to a fly on their neighbour's plate. The people of Karnataka have understood this pattern of behaviour,' he said. The chief minister said that his government empathises with the grief and anguish of the families affected by every tragedy. 'This is why we do not exploit such incidents for political gain. However, given the BJP leaders' repeated attempts to incite the public by dredging up these incidents, we feel compelled to expose their hypocrisy by bringing certain incidents during their rule to the attention of the people,' he said. The chief minister said that in 2002, during the Gujarat riots, approximately 2,000 innocent people from various communities lost their lives. Despite Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's suggestion to take responsibility and resign, the then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi neither stepped down nor expressed any remorse to date. 'Those demanding our resignation should first address this.' 'In April this year, during the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, 26 Indians lost their lives. Our party did not demand the resignation of the Prime Minister over this incident. We merely requested a special parliamentary session to discuss it, which was also denied by the Prime Minister. Even now, the perpetrators of this attack have not been identified. Isn't this a failure of the central government? Who is accountable for this failure? Is it Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Rahul Gandhi, or Prime Minister Narendra Modi?' the Chief Minister asked. The chief minister said that for the past two years, Manipur has been engulfed in violence. Hundreds have lost their lives, yet the BJP Chief Minister, Biren Singh, clung to power for 20 months. He finally resigned only after the Supreme Court intervened, and violence continues to plague the state. Shouldn't the Union Home Minister take responsibility for this? the chief minister asked. 'In Gujarat, the Morbi bridge collapse claimed 140 lives. In January this year, 30 pilgrims lost their lives during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Were the Chief Ministers of those states not from the BJP? Not only did they not resign, but those governments have also not conducted a proper investigation into these incidents. Given this, what moral authority does the BJP in our state have to demand our resignation?' he asked. 'Our government is answerable to the 7 crore people of Karnataka. Hence, in the stampede case, preliminary action has been taken against those who appeared negligent. A comprehensive and impartial investigation is being conducted under the leadership of a retired judge. Based on the commission's report, strict action will be taken against the culprits without hesitation.I urge the BJP leaders in the state to abandon their street theatrics and act per their conscience,' he added.
