I watched it between my fingers: Bring Her Back reviewed
It stars Sally Hawkins and this isn't, alas, horror at its most fun, inventive and camp. This is horror horror: gory, grisly and one that properly goes for it at the end – which, if you are not a horror nut, can't come soon enough. Even the horror nuts who loved it have been saying things like: 'It's the best film I will never watch again.' I think I may regret seeing it the once.
It opens with grainy home-video footage of some occult ritual. A newborn baby lies within a chalk circle, while a dude with a weirdly distended stomach wanders around and a young woman is strung up. What the hell is going on here? All will be explained is the hope. Next we meet Andy (Billy Barratt) and his younger stepsister Piper (Sora Wong), who is legally blind. Their father has just died and as Andy is three months off his 18th birthday he can't yet assume guardianship of Piper, whom he adores. They are therefore dispatched to live with a foster mother, Laura, played by Hawkins. (One minute she's Paddington's lovely mum and the next she's forcing a bereaved, traumatised child to kiss a corpse. It's a rum old business, acting.)
Laura has another foster child, a boy, Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), who is electively mute and whose eyes sometimes go opaque – and I honestly can't bear to go into what he likes to eat. He's not a well lad, and let's leave it there. One other thing: he will need dental attention come the end, and now we'll definitely leave it there. Hawkins's accent goes to Australia via the East End but she's so deliciously and escalatingly menacing let's not hold it against her.
Laura is warm, at first, in her hippy-dippy way, but the fact that she's taxidermised her dead dog is a bit of a clue. And why exactly is there a chalk circle on her drive? She had a daughter the same age as Piper who drowned. She favours Piper and increasingly gaslights Andy while Oliver… we left it there, remember? The visual shocks come thick and fast. There are sights I part-saw through my hands or through the gauze of the T-shirt I pulled up over my head that I'll never part-unsee.
The mounting anguish and tension is well handled as Laura's plan becomes clearish. It's obvious whom she longs to bring back, but is this the best way, Laura? Really? The chalk circles recur, as does that grainy footage, but no explanation is ever forthcoming. Who is that dude with the belly? The girl being strung up? I don't want characters to sit at a table and launch into exposition as that would be trying, but at the same time I needed more. If I am going to be put through the mill, there had better be a good reason for it. I was waiting for a clever twist but it never came
The film is plainly about grief, and where it can send us. But it's ultimately pretty simplistic. Still, the Philippou brothers know how to scare the bejesus out of you and the performances are all excellent, particularly Hawkins and Wren Phillips – from what I saw.

Bluey episode pulled from screens for completely unexpected reason
Some Bluey fans are unable to watch an episode of the beloved kids show after it was removed from a streaming service. The Australian animated series first hit screens in 2020. It follows the titular character, a Blue Heeler puppy, and her family – Dad Bandit, Mum Chilli and younger sister Bingo. Bluey proved a massive success and two years after premiering Down Under, it was rolled out globally – with episodes streaming on BBC iPlayer and Disney Plus in the UK. However, a recent promotion between BBC Studios and Australian hardware store Bunnings has resulted in an episode now being unable to air. The season 2 episode Hammerbarn follows Bandit being inspired to build a new pizza oven before taking his family to visit their local hardware store, Hammerbarn, for supplies. A few years on, Bunnings has rolled out products connected to the show – including garden gnomes, rugs, hats, socks and tote bags – whilst also hosting in-store scavenger hunts and workshops. This has meant the show's local broadcaster – the Australian Broadcasting Corporation – can no longer air the episode due to the government-funded network being banned from advertising and taking part in commercial partnerships. 'This campaign is a BBC Studios and Bunnings partnership,' an ABC representative said in a statement to Channel Nine. 'As the ABC cannot align with a commercial brand or partnership, the Bluey episode Hammerbarn will temporarily be unavailable on ABC iView while the Bunnings Hammerbarn campaign is live.' They went on to explain that the episode would 'return to ABC iView at a later date'. Although Hammerbarn is still available to stream in the UK and US, Australian viewers have been left frustrated, with one parent saying it was 'silly'. Despite the ABC being bound by regulations, Bunnings spokeswoman Melissa O'Neill told Kidspot the company was disappointed the ABC had chosen to remove the episode, in which the Heeler family visit their local hardware store. 'It's sad to think that they can't enjoy the episode. And particularly given Bluey fans can buy merchandise from a range of retailers and sites both in Australia and overseas,' she said. When the Bluey merch was first released in Bunnings last year it sparked a frenzy, with the garden gnomes 'flying off shelves'. There were four available – Hecuba, Tony, Jeremy and the Meditation gnome – which retailed for $19 (£9.50). More Trending However, after they became so in demand, some started advertising full sets on eBay for as much as $1000 (£500). Following the success of Bluey (it was last year revealed to be the most-streamed show in the US, watched for 55.62 billion minutes on Disney Plus), the Walt Disney Company and BBC Studios announced in December 2024 that the show was being developed into a feature film. Due for release in 2027, creator Joe Brumm will be leading the Ludo Studios production as the writer and director. View More » Bluey is streaming on BBC iPlayer and Disney Plus in the UK. Inside Celebrity SAS star Adam Collard's 'dream' relationship with partner
Adam Collard is back on the small screen tonight with a new season of Celebrity SAS, but the prolific reality TV star also enjoys a high-profile romance. The Love Island star, 29, made a name for himself on various dating shows until he met 38-year-old football presenter Laura Woods, best known as the face of ITV's Euros coverage over the past two years. Laura shone when she presented coverage of the 2023 Women's World Cup for the channel. Not only that, but she is also a TNT Sports and Amazon Prime Video presenter after spending several years as a boxing pitch-side reporter with Gary Neville on Sky Sports. Meanwhile, as well as stints on Love Island and Celebs Go Dating, Adam is also a fitness guru and founder of Sculpt Fitness. But what has he said about his long-term relationship with partner Laura Woods? Fitness coach and former Islander (in 2018 and 2022) Adam, 28, has been dating Laura since 2023. They confirmed their romance by making things Instagram official in October 2023. It was Celebs Go Dating star Adam who revealed he actually slid into Laura's DMs first but left her on read after she replied. However, sparks started to fly once they met in person and things got pretty serious rather quickly, with Adam declaring her 'the one' as their relationship became public knowledge. The couple frequently share loved-up photos together, with Adam sharing a sweet photo dump in May dedicated to his girlfriend, which he dubbed 'a little bit of everything'. It included photos of them on holiday together, training together and with the dog, with plenty of cuddles in between. In July 2024, the pair shared the happy news that they were expecting their first baby together. Just weeks later, in September, they took their relationship to the next step by getting engaged. At the start of this year, Adam and Laura celebrated the birth of their baby boy, Leo Ernie Collard, as friends and family flooded their social media with warm wishes. In an interview with the Mirror, Adam said about his fiancée: 'She's amazing and we are having a lot of fun. It feels like I'm living the dream. 'I would never get in a relationship with someone at least at one point [unless] I thought they were The One.' And when asked about the age gap by OK! Magazine, added: 'Perhaps that's what I've always been seeking: an older woman. 'It's something that works for me. But Laura isn't really an 'older woman'. If you meet her and spend time with her… I've dated younger people who don't act as maturely as she does! Age never factored into our relationship, it's been smooth sailing from the start.' Elsewhere in the same chat, he spoke about his dreams to be his children's 'best friend' like he was with his father and plans to have no more than two kids otherwise he 'might stuggle'. The pair have also faced hardships in their relationship, as Adam opens up about on the Celebrity SAS. He explained that Laura had been 11 weeks pregnant when she experienced a miscarriage (she felt pregnant with their son Leo a month later). Reflecting on the impact of miscarriage, he said: 'I know it's a terrible way to look at it, but I felt like it was bad karma for me being on dating shows and upsetting too many people. 'I felt like that was some high power's way of being like, 'Well, there you go, that's what you have to carry',' he said, per the Mail Online. He added that he was a 'love rat jumping from girl to girl. I want to show I'm not that man any more.' Prior to Adam being her boyfriend, Laura had a long-term relationship with a professional athlete. She dated former England rugby player Alex Corbisiero for eight years. Meanwhile, Adam's exes include Zara McDermott, who he was coupled up with during his first stint on Love Island in 2018, before moving onto an on-off relationship with Sarah Godfrey. His second appearance on Love Island in 2022 saw Adam pair off with paramedic Paige Thorne, with the relationship continuing for a few months outside of the villa, while he also had a fling with model Lottie Moss, Kate Moss's younger sister, after they appeared together on Celebs Go Dating. In May 2024, Laura sustained gruesome injuries from a freak pillow accident forced her 'off the tele' and to miss anchoring Tyson Fury's fight with Oleksandr Usyk for TNT Sports. The popular presenter required emergency surgery after a glass lampshade shattered above her and the glass cut her face and arms, narrowly missing her eyes. She explained at the time that the incident happened as she swung a pillow at a holiday cottage. In her post revealing her injuries she praised Adam 'for being my hero that day' as he acted 'so quickly' and didn't leave her side. Laura also praised the doctors who treated her as she continued: 'I've added in the photos from then to now to show that even though it may look rough, it's such a wonderful improvement already and I'm so grateful. More Trending 'It was a hell of a shock and I've been a bit sad, but I'm feeling very lucky it wasn't worse. So a big thanks to my eyebrow too, for taking the brunt of it.' Adam later angrily hit back at trolls who alleged he had hit his girlfriend, telling one commenter to 'shut up' and 'read her Instagram post'. Airing across eight one-hour episodes, the seventh series of Celebrity SAS can be streamed or watched live every Sunday and Monday on Channel 4, starting on August 3. 'My husband got cringeworthy tattoo of me so I made sure to get payback on him'
Tegan De Vil was shocked when her husband Jarrie surprised her by getting an embarrassing photo of her face tattooed onto his thigh. But she now got her revenge on her spouse For many, tattoos are a big decision that often takes time to plan out as they're filled with profound meaning. Yet for some, it's merely an fun and exciting way to decorate their bodies with. An Australian couple, however, have taken a unique approach to expressing their affection through ink – and it's not what you'd typically expect. Tegan De Vil, an influencer with a hefty following of over 300,000 on Instagram and TikTok, is known for her comedic skits and occasionally features her husband, Jarrie, in her content. This has included Tegan giving Jarrie a taste of pregnancy when she was pregnant with their firstborn child. The pair previously made waves when Jarrie surprised Tegan by getting a tattoo of her pulling a humorous face etched onto his body. But now, Tegan has exacted the ultimate revenge on her spouse. "Remember that time my husband got that tattoo of me," she penned on her Instagram video. The clip then revealed the ink in question, situated on Jarrie's inner thigh. The tattoo captured Tegan's face in an exaggerated grimace, eyes cast upwards, mirroring a photo of her which she also displayed in the footage. The scene then switched to Tegan, adopting a stern expression as she faced the camera, before panning to reveal a tattoo parlour in the background, hinting at her retaliatory plans. "Payback time Jarrie," she simply penned on the clip before flashing a grin and ending the video. Her 79,900 Instagram followers were sent into a frenzy, with many begging for Tegan to reveal the completed tattoo. Days later, she obliged with a second video where she showed off her eagerly awaited new tattoo. "Surely you're not that crazy to get his named tattooed," read the text overlay at the beginning, showing her with hair wrapped in a towel, munching on a stuffed pita. The footage then swiftly transitioned to the big reveal – and it was far more audacious than merely inking his name. She opted for a full-blown portrait of Jarrie's face pulling a comical grimace, etched onto her calf. She followed up by sharing the brief clip that inspired the tattoo's design. "Hahaha I love it," one viewer exclaimed in the comments. "This is the kind of pettiness I want in a partner. Not me looking through old photos of my wife." remarked a second. "Omg, this is awesome!" a third chimed in. "May this type of love find me!" a fourth admirer commented, clearly amused by the gesture.
