Over 60 individuals to be called to assist investigation on fatal FRU accident
TELUK INTAN: Police will record statements from more than 60 individuals to assist in the investigation into the accident that claimed the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) members on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam yesterday morning.
Lower Perak police chief ACP Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said his department would call FRU members who were at the scene of the accident as well as the owner of the lorry company to assist in the investigation.
'This is to avoid biased investigations and so on. I also call on the public to come forward to provide information that can assist our investigation.
'We will look at (the investigation) from all angles, namely human negligence, technical issues involving the vehicle as well as environmental issues,' he said when met by reporters after the completion of the remand application for the lorry driver in the Magistrate's Court here today.
Meanwhile, Bakri said an FRU member from Unit 5 Ipoh was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital Ipoh due to internal bleeding with head and abdominal injuries.
According to Bakri, eight more injured FRU prsonnel are currently still seeking treatment at Teluk Intan Hospital.
Earlier, in the incident at about 8.50 am yesterday, a lorry carrying gravel crashed into a truck carrying 18 FRU members who were on their way back to Ipoh after completing their duties in conjunction with the Chitrapournami festival here.
The horrific accident resulted in nine FRU members being killed, two seriously injured and seven others injured.

Loke said the 30-day period given to the special task force investigating the accident, which began on May 15, was almost over. 'The task force's report will be presented to the Cabinet next week. I will present it to the Cabinet before any further action is taken,' he told a press conference at his ministry today. In the May 13 incident, an FRU truck in a convoy returning from duty during the Chitirai Pournami celebration collided with a gravel-laden lorry along Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam. Nine FRU personnel from Unit 5 Ipoh died in the crash. Former Johor menteri besar Hasni Mohammad and PAS MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin are among the members of the special task force investigating the tragedy. The task force itself is chaired by the ministry's chief inspector of air accidents, Tan Chee Kee. Besides probing the cause of the incident, including identifying any systemic weaknesses related to road safety, the task force is also responsible for analysing the effectiveness of current enforcement measures and regulations within the transport industry. Man jailed 30 months, fined RM1,500 for breaking into ex-Kedah MB's home
ALOR SETAR: A pasar malam trader selling children's toys was today sentenced to 30 months' jail and fined RM1,500 by the Magistrate's Court here after pleading guilty to breaking into the home of ex- Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah last week. Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah also ordered the night market trader, T. Rakesh Kumar, 44, to serve an additional six months jail if he defaulted on he fine. According to the charge, the accused was alleged to have committed housebreaking by entering the residence of the former Kedah Menteri Besar and stealing a grass-cutting machine at Taman Rakyat here at 2.50am on May 29. For the offence, he was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code and punishable under the same section, which provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years and a fine or whipping. Earlier, the accused, who was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation counsel Aina Shafina Idrus Saidi, appealed for a lenient sentence, citing that he is married, has no fixed income, and is responsible for supporting his wife and parents. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Sharmila Md Asri urged the court to impose a commensurate punishment as the offence was a repeat case and the accused had previous convictions for similar offences.
