Bears dubbed likely worst-to-first team in 2025
The Chicago Bears have been one of the biggest offseason winners as they've improved their team across the board, starting with the hiring of Ben Johnson as head coach. The Bears already have a young, rising star in quarterback Caleb Williams, and they've prioritized his development with the addition of Johnson, as well as the overhauling of the entire interior offensive line and some new weapons added to the mix. Chicago also added defensive tackle Grady Jarrett and defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, along with a potential impact draft class. Advertisement But the question remains: Is this finally the year where the NFL's offseason champions finally see the product translate on the field during the regular season? ESPN's Aaron Schatz ranked the NFL's most likely worst-to-first teams for the 2025 season. And not only did the Bears make the list, but they were second only to the San Francisco 49ers. The Bears finished 22nd in FPI last season, but they're seen as above-average entering the 2025 season. That's because Caleb Williams should improve in his second year under center, and the Bears added a lot of talent on the offensive line to give him better protection. There's also a lot of optimism about new coach Ben Johnson, but it's important to remember that teams with new coaches and coordinators tend to take a small step back in the first season. We may not notice this because new coaching staffs are usually brought in after particularly bad seasons, making a slight improvement a simple regression toward the mean. The biggest issue holding the Bears back this season is that they have the second-hardest schedule in the NFL, per my DVOA rankings (more on the hardest schedule later). All three other NFC North teams (Vikings, Lions and Packers) made the postseason in 2024, and only Minnesota is expected to decline in 2025. We've seen this film before. The Bears have an impactful offseason with high-flying expectations only the crap the bed when the season begins. But this year feels different with Johnson's arrival, and his impact is already being felt by the players inside the locker room. Sure, the Bears have the second-most difficult schedule in the NFL. Yes, they play in a tough NFC North division. But they also have the leader and the roster talent to make waves. And if Johnson can unlock Williams early in Year 1, the sky's the limit. Back after first major win, Johnson again seeks top form at Oakmont
Two-time major winner Dustin Johnson signs autographs for fans during a practice session ahead of the 125th US Open at Oakmont, where he won his first major crown in 2016 (Warren Little) Nine years after capturing his first major victory at Oakmont, Dustin Johnson returns to the formidable layout trying to recapture the form that made him so special back in 2016. The 40-year-old American, who also won the 2020 Masters, called Oakmont the hardest course he has played on Monday but says his 2016 US Open victory boosts his hopes when the 125th US Open begins Thursday. Advertisement "I have confidence in this golf course because I know I played well," he said. "This week puts a lot of pressure on the driver. I feel like I'm driving the ball really good right now. "You definitely have to hit it in the fairway if you want a chance to win around here." Johnson finished on four-under 276 for a three-shot victory in 2016, solving the iconic course by avoiding its dense rough. "I drove it really straight. I hit a lot of fairways. That was the only reason I shot that well," Johnson said. ""Seems like it's tougher this time around, but that's just maybe with the little bit of added length." Advertisement Johnson has won at least once in each of the past six years and three times in three years since jumping from the PGA Tour to Saudi-backed LIV Golf. But he hasn't won since 2024 in Las Vegas. "I don't feel like I've slipped any. My scores haven't reflected, but it is a really fine line," Johnson said. "For me it's always really close to being good, but just getting back there and keeping it consistent. Over the last couple months I'm starting to see a lot of patterns and the game feels like it's coming back into good form." Johnson said he doesn't see more pressure to perform well in majors because he plays in LIV Golf, where a lack of world ranking points limits potential qualifying for majors. Advertisement "Not really. It's still a major. It's still the same amount of pressure no matter where you're playing," Johnson said. "I'm looking forward to playing in it this week and hopefully can contend." This week marks only the second time Johnson has returned to Oakmont since his debut major win, the other occasion being to accept an honorary membership in the club. "I'm probably their favorite member because I never come," Johnson said. "It's really nice to be back. The course is just as hard as I remember, if not harder. I like coming back here. A lot of good memories from that year." js/rcw

Report: C.J. Gardner-Johnson will participate in Texans' mandatory minicamp
Texans defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson reported to the team facility Monday ahead of Tuesday's start of a two-day mandatory minicamp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC reports. Gardner-Johnson, who the Eagles traded to the Texans this offseason, skipped the team's voluntary offseason workouts to train on his own with his personal trainer. Advertisement 'I've really been like to myself," Gardner-Johnson told Wilson. "The week I was there, it was very, very closer than places I've been before. Because this is a brand-new organization, trying to be the first team to put a bull on the ring. I had to step back. I'm too much sometimes. I think coming off a Super Bowl, it's a little too much for guys who feel like they're at the top of their profession right now because of who they are. That's respectable. So, we had to step back and then start to humble up, because now I'm at the bottom of the mountain with a team that's never been to the top. So, I can't bring the top of the mountain to the bottom of the mountain. I can't do that. It's like an avalanche. I don't want to cause a cluster---.' Gardner-Johnson, 27, led the league in interceptions in 2022 with six and has 18 in his six-year career. He spent three seasons in New Orleans and was with the Eagles in 2022 and 2024 after a one-year stint in Detroit in 2023 that didn't go well. The trade from the Eagles took him by surprise. "I feel highly disrespected, but it's a business," Gardner-Johnson said. "'Never was an All-Pro or Pro Bowl! Never!' [I] led the league in interceptions. What more do you want? Advertisement "People say, 'He's a hazard. He's this. He's that.' I never been no hazard, bro. They got no real issues on me. That black ball ain't going to work on me, because I got me a ring. I got me one. I got three more championships in me. I'm probably going to win the next three. I'm going to get me another Super Bowl this year. Just watch." The Texans have never made the AFC Championship Game, but they won the AFC South and a playoff game each of the past two seasons.
