Report: Shedeur Sanders has path to winning Browns QB competition

Yahoo04-06-2025
Shedeur Sanders might've tumbled down the draft board, but he could be flying up the Cleveland Browns' quarterback depth chart.
The former Colorado quarterback's draft slide ended when the Browns selected him in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the 144th overall pick. Players taken that late don't typically have a great success rate at becoming starters in the pros, but Sanders isn't your average Day 3 pick.

Some have speculated Sanders slid because of his family, attitude or talent. Others have noted that he doesn't figure to be a starting quarterback, which makes the noise surrounding his presence on a team an unnecessary distraction.
Regardless, Sanders is in camp with the Browns. On a team without a clear starting quarterback atop the depth chart, that means it's a wide-open competition – one that the fifth-rounder has a path to winning, according to ESPN's Kimberley A. Martin.
"Listen, in that building, there are people who believe that Shedeur can 100 percent be the starter of this football team," Martin said on ESPN's "Get Up" on Wednesday. "You said it's incumbent upon the Browns to put him in the situation, it's also incumbent upon Shedeur to do the work, which, talking to people in that building, they've said he is soaking up everything like a sponge."
To do so, Sanders will have to surpass Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and fellow 2025 draft pick Dillon Gabriel on the depth chart.

That doesn't mean he isn't taking every opportunity to learn from the veteran Flacco, however.
"In the QB rooms, talking to Flacco, wanting to learn, and also, let's not forget, Dillon Gabriel, spent a lot of time talking about Shedeur, but Dillon Gabriel's a guy who was drafted in the third," Martin said. "One source said to me, he is everything you want in a quarterback, he's just small. If he were a little taller, a lot of people would be looking at Dillon Gabriel a little differently, at least that's how they feel in their building. So they have a very interesting quarterback situation, and Shedeur has a path."
Gabriel, who was selected two rounds earlier than Sanders, illustrates the problem for the Colorado prospect. As ESPN's Peter Schrager pointed out during the segment, Sanders likely won't have the same amount of reps in practice as the other quarterbacks on the roster.
With less room for error, it presents a challenge for the rookie. Regardless, he is still expected to be on the roster, barring something unforeseen.

"The sense I get in that building is something catastrophic, crazy would have to happen for Shedeur not be on the roster," Martin said. "They believe in the talent."
Now it's on Sanders to run through the finish line and secure the starting job.

NFL wanted to 'make an example' out of Shedeur Sanders, per HOF RB Eric Dickerson

One of the best running backs in NFL history says the league told teams not to select Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft. Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson spoke with Fred Roggin and Rodney Peete on the "Roggin and Rodney" show on AM 570 LA Sports. The longtime Los Angeles Rams star said he thought the Rams should've selected Sanders in the draft. He added what he heard about messaging to teams ahead of the draft about the Colorado standout. "I tell you this much, what I heard from someone that's in the NFL that the NFL told [teams] don't draft him, do not draft him," Dickerson said. "We're going to make an example out of him. And this came from a very good source, a very good source." Dickerson's source also said that league officials called the Cleveland Browns during the draft after Sanders fell much further than anticipated to change the prior messaging. The Colorado product was widely viewed as a first-round prospect but was still available by the start of the fifth round where the Browns took him at No. 144 overall. "He said that – I won't say who – somebody called the Cleveland Browns and said 'don't do that, draft him,'" Dickerson said. "Because they weren't going to draft him either... They were forced into drafting him because somebody made a call to them." "So what was the objective? He doesn't get picked, he's an undrafted free agent?" Roggin asked. "That's exactly what was going to happen," Dickerson said. "They were going to have him not get drafted to basically show you 'this is what happens when you do this.' I mean, look, [Roggin], the NFL's got all kinds of power, they do all kinds of stuff. You know it and I know it too." Sanders was the second quarterback the Browns selected in the draft after taking Oregon's Dillon Gabriel in the third round, No. 94 overall. Sanders was the team's final draft selection. He played well in the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. He completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the 30-10 win. An oblique injury kept him out of the Browns' second preseason game against the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles but he should be good to go for the team's finale against the Rams. Cleveland named veteran Joe Flacco their starter for the 2025 NFL season. It's now a battle to be his backup between Sanders, Gabriel and free agent signee Kenny Pickett.

Hall of Famer Says NFL Purposely Sabotaged Shedeur Sanders' Draft Stock

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Few would argue that Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders is already one of the more polarizing players in the NFL. Sanders, who was projected to be a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft back in April, has had a chip on his shoulder ever since the Browns took him with the 144th overall pick, putting an end to one of the more shocking draft slides in recent memory. In the weeks leading up to the draft, there were several reports that Sanders had bad interviews and came across as arrogant when he spoke to a few NFL teams that he didn't believe would draft him. More NFL: Latest Kenny Pickett Development Good News for Browns' Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel There was also reportedly a pre-draft incident between Sanders and New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, according to The Ringer's Todd McShay, in which Daboll called out Sanders for not being prepared to walk through an install package, resulting in Sanders having a bit of an attitude. There's even been reports from several people in NFL circles since the draft that have claimed the NFL purposely told teams not to draft Sanders. That theory gained a little more credibility on Thursday when legendary Los Angeles Rams running back Eric Dickerson admitted on "The Dan Patrick Show" that he also heard the league purposely tried to tank Sanders' draft stock. Do not draft him, we're going to make an example out of him,'" Dickerson said. "And this came from a very good source, and he said that—I won't say who—somebody called the Cleveland Browns and said, 'Don't do that — draft him,' because they weren't going to draft him either." Dickerson's remarks seem to put Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's previous comments about drafting Sanders into a different light.
