Guinea coach Camara looks beyond scoreline in CHAN 2024 preparations
Guinea's home-based national team wrapped up a vital stage of their 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) build-up this week, using back-to-back clashes with regional rivals Senegal to sharpen their competitive edge ahead of the tournament.
Although the Syli Local lost the second match 1-0 in Diamniadio on Monday—following a goalless draw in the first leg—head coach Souleymane Camara says his side came away with more than just a result.
'Performance, not the scoreboard, was our main focus,' said Camara, who led the team through five days of intensive preparation split between Conakry and Dakar.
'We wanted to give every player time on the pitch. These games offered us real test conditions to fine-tune our game plan.'
The two encounters, far from gentle friendlies, were fiercely contested, highlighting the stakes involved even before the CHAN group stages begin in August.
Camara underlined the competitive tone of the fixtures. 'It wasn't a friendly for us. This was high-intensity football.
"These games were rich in lessons, and we'll go back with valuable footage and insights to help us fix the details before the tournament kicks off.'
Despite the narrow defeat, Camara expressed optimism about the overall structure of the team, particularly in defence.
'Our organisation at the back held firm under pressure, which is encouraging. Offensively, we lacked sharpness in the final third. That's an area we're targeting in the next phase.'
Guinea will now shift their base to Morocco, where an extended training camp is expected to further refine tactics, fitness, and cohesion ahead of CHAN 2024, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Drawn into Group C, Guinea will face stiff competition against Algeria, Uganda, South Africa, and Niger.
But with valuable match rhythm and tactical clarity gained from their Senegal outings, the West Africans will be eyeing a strong tournament start in early August.

Eight days to go: Avram Grant: CHAN a launchpad for Zambia's next generation
Zambia head coach Avram Grant believes the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) represents more than just a tournament — it's a strategic platform to fast-track the development of the country's local-based footballers. With Zambia drawn in a challenging Group A alongside co-hosts Kenya, North African heavyweights Morocco, Angola and two-time champions DR Congo, Grant is focusing on internal growth rather than external threats. The former Chelsea and Ghana boss insists that CHAN serves as a critical tool for long-term progress in Zambian football. 'At the moment, we are preparing well because CHAN is very important for us. We don't have many players in Europe like other countries who have lots of their first team players abroad. For us, we mostly use players who play locally, and we have already shown what we can do—like when we beat Ivory Coast,' he said. Grant, who has spent the last year identifying and nurturing talent across the Zambian Premier League, stressed that the CHAN is not just about silverware but also about scouting and shaping the future national team core. 'Normally, this tournament gives us an opportunity to see more players for the first team, which is good for creating competition,' he added. Despite facing strong opposition in the group stage, Grant's approach remains steady — focusing on Zambia's game model and individual player development. 'In this competition, we will concentrate more on our team and its development to see who gets promoted to the first team. Of course, we can only do that when we have a winning mentality like we've shown in the past,' he said. 'For CHAN, I don't think the opponent is important. What's key for us is to play as a team and show that winning mentality.' The Israeli tactician, who took Zambia to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, underlined the vital role CHAN plays in providing exposure to domestic talent. 'CHAN is like a tool for us. Our main national team is composed of local players. We have a tough group, but that will help us grow in such an environment,' he explained. With several young players set to feature in the upcoming tournament, Grant is confident that the experience will be invaluable for their development. 'For the young players, this is a chance to grow and mature. They still need a bit of guidance and polishing, but I'm sure we will achieve a good tournament with them.' Zambia's preparations have been quietly impressive, with the team stringing together a series of strong performances in recent warm-up matches. 'We will do our best because over the last few games, we've shown good football and a lot of improvement. We've kept four clean sheets in a row. Now we are facing a different challenge and want to continue improving these players. This is the target.' Zambia's CHAN campaign, therefore, carries a dual objective — to compete with pride and resilience, and more importantly, to lay the foundation for a stronger Chipolopolo in years to come.

South Africa's CHAN squad blends free agents and rising stars in title bid
South Africa head coach Molefi Ntseki has named a 25-man squad for the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), featuring a strong mix of experienced campaigners and emerging talents — but strikingly, nearly half the squad are currently without clubs. With the CHAN tournament restricted to players plying their trade in their domestic leagues, the timing of the competition — set to run from 2–30 August in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda — has created challenges for many nations, including Bafana Bafana. The squad was unveiled in Johannesburg on Thursday, with Mamelodi Sundowns contributing the most players (five). Ntseki has turned this into an opportunity, banking on continuity, grit, and hunger among players who helped South Africa qualify. The coach praised the team's journey so far and expressed optimism ahead of their Group C challenge, which includes hosts Uganda, Algeria, Niger, and Guinea. 'We just want to take this opportunity to thank the SAFA Technical Committee for giving us the opportunity to lead this team in the CHAN tournament,' said Ntseki. 'We have assembled a team that will represent South Africa in the CHAN tournament.' Notably, 12 of the 25 selected players are unattached, including familiar names like Zakhele Lepasa, Keagan Dolly, and Thabiso Kutumela. Ntseki is betting on their international experience and motivation to shine on the continental stage — and perhaps secure fresh contracts in the process. 'The team that we have selected is mostly composed of the players we started this journey with,' Ntseki added. 'So we are looking forward to the tournament and to do our best. We just want to say thanks to the clubs and to the coaches who managed to release players for our CHAN team to have a good squad going into the tournament.' The squad will assemble in Johannesburg on Friday, 25 July, before travelling to Uganda on Sunday, 3 August. South Africa opens its campaign against Algeria on Friday, 8 August, with other group games against Niger, Guinea, and Uganda — a co-host that could draw massive home crowds. SAFA Technical Committee Chairman Jack Maluleke emphasized that Ntseki was the right man to lead the side into the tournament, having guided them through a tricky qualification campaign that included victories over Egypt and Malawi. 'He got us to this stage of the journey and it is only right that he completes the job in the CHAN tournament itself,' said Maluleke. With a healthy mix of players hungry to prove themselves and those with prior international exposure, South Africa's campaign will be closely watched — not just for results, but for signs of revival in the country's local football ranks.
