Rotarians reminded of core pillars to stay relevant

TAWAU: Rotary District 3310 Governor (2025–2026) Dr Shahul Hameed has called on Rotarians to renew their commitment to service by embracing the core pillars of Innovation, Continuity, and Partnership. These principles, he said, are key to amplifying the organisation's impact and ensuring its relevance in an evolving world. Speaking at the 33rd Installation Banquet of the Rotary Club of Tawau Tanjung held at Borneo Royale Hotel recently, Shahul emphasised that Rotary's enduring strength lies not only in its history or global reach, but in the dedication of its people. 'Rotary's greatest asset is its network of passionate volunteers who are committed to driving lasting change,' he said. 'As the world continues to change—technologically, socially, and economically—Rotary must evolve alongside it.' 'Rotary members are people of action—we do not wait for change, we create it,' he said. The event also marked the installation of Camden Thien as the incoming president of the Rotary Club of Tawau Tanjung for the 2025–2026 term. In his inaugural address, Thien expressed his enthusiasm and commitment to leading the club into its next chapter alongside a newly appointed board of directors. Thien pledged to prioritise excellence, embrace innovation, and deliver meaningful service. ‘Many still unaware about State-funded insurance scheme'

SANDAKAN: The people of Sabah are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the accident insurance plan fully covered by the state government, to ensure they do not miss out on the benefits of protection in the event of an accident. Karamunting State Assemblyman, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, stated that this plan has been in effect since May 1, yet many people are still unaware of its existence. This plan really matters, especially for those with lower incomes. They are not required to pay anything, yet they are still covered. 'However, many people are still unaware of this insurance,' he said. He made the statement after visiting the Sandakan branch office of Progressive Insurance Bhd, the insurance company appointed to manage the scheme. George also sought clarification on the application and claims process to assist in facilitating the affairs of heirs eligible to make claims. This plan covers all local residents of Sabah aged between one month and 80 years, with a maximum compensation of RM10,000 for cases of death or permanent disability due to accidents. It also provides a funeral condolence payment of RM500. This scheme will run for three years until April 30, 2028. Compensation should be paid out as soon as 14 days, and no later than 30 days after all the paperwork is submitted. George stated that his service team has recently received several cases indicating that the victims' heirs were unaware of their eligibility to make claims. RM1.33 billion spent on education since GRS took over

Kota Kinabalu: The State Government continues to prioritise educational development by allocating RM1.33 billion for various educational programmes and initiatives from 2021 to 2025. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said RM848.26 million has been spent on various educational assistance, while RM485 million is specifically allocated for human capital development. He said from 2021 to 2025, 14 new initiatives worth RM164.14 million have benefited approximately 210,918 students across the State. 'Academic excellence is not just an individual success but a crucial asset for the country. The State Government is committed to ensuring that no child in Sabah is left behind in accessing quality education,' he said at the Sabah Education Department's 13th Academic Excellence Recognition Ceremony (Mekar) held at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC). His speech was delivered by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif. Additionally, Hajiji said the State Government has also established the Sabah Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council on May 19 this year in the effort to coordinate over 160 technical and vocational training institutions throughout the State, in line with future labour market needs. He said the State Government also provides cash incentive of RM1,000 to 146 outstanding STPM 2024 students, while one Sabahan student who excelled at the national level also received cash incentive of RM3,000 as a token of appreciation. Hajiji emphasised the importance of close cooperation between the State and Federal Government through the Education Ministry to enhance the quality and infrastructure of education in Sabah. 'The State Government is always open to discussions to strengthen human capital development. Education remains a key passport to the future of our children,' he stressed. Federal posts: Sabah records most applicants

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah recorded a consistent upward trend in permanent and interim contract appointments in the federal civil service over the past three years since 2022. Public Services Commission (SPA) Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Jailani Muhamed Yunus said Sabah not only received the highest number of applications but also topped the chart in terms of new appointments last year, reflecting growing awareness among local youths of career opportunities in government service. 'Over the past three years, Sabah has maintained its position as the State with the highest number of applicants for vacancies in the federal public service. 'In 2024 alone, over 11 per cent of all civil service appointments were made in Sabah, making it the State with the highest number of recruitments. 'This is a very good indicator, showing strong awareness among Sabah's youths and graduates to join the civil service,' he said after a courtesy visit on Head of State Tun Musa Aman at Istana Seri Kinabalu. He said SPA has also begun leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) in its recruitment processes, starting with initial assessments. The Candidate Psychometric (PC) system now uses AI to randomise test questions, preventing leaks and manipulation. This ensures each candidate receives a unique set of questions during entry-level assessments. AI is also being used to analyse personality traits and will eventually play a greater role in verifying personal records such as certificates and identification documents, streamlining the screening process before interviews. Jailani reaffirmed SPA's support for the State Government in widening job access through initiatives like the recent Kembara Kerjaya Madani SPA outreach in Kudat and Pulau Banggi. The programme offers interview tips and application guidance for jobseekers.
