McDonald's say Brits have been pronouncing one popular food wrong for years

Daily Mirror04-07-2025
McDonald's fans may have been pronouncing one of the most popular menu items wrong this whole time as the fast food chain reveals the correct way to say it after new research
We've all got our go-to maccies order - but you may have been pronouncing it wrong when verbalising what you want in the drive-thru.
While most of the menu items are pretty easy to say, those who opt for the classic Filet-O-Fish have most likely said it incorrectly at least once. A poll conducted by the popular fast food chain of over 2,000 UK adults found this to be a common mistake, with a third (33%) of Brits pronouncing it wrong.

They opt for a Fil-LET instead of the correct pronunciation Fil-LAY. While it is one of the restaurant's classic burgers, it appears to have divided diners. The new research from McDonald's discovered that this nervousness extends beyond just the Filet-O-Fish where it found one in five (21%) admit to avoiding certain dishes in restaurants because they can't pronounce them confidently, with Gen Z diners (28%) the most likely to play it safe when faced with ordering a tricky menu item.

The classic fish burger is is made up of bread-crumbed white Hoki or Pollock fish on a bun, with tartare sauce and a slice of cheese. Keen to avoid fans potentially missing out, McDonald's has enlisted the support of pronunciation and etiquette expert - Grant Harrold, former Royal Butler.
Grant said: "Mispronunciation fear is leading nearly half (45%) of Brits to miss out on important culinary experiences, as fear of embarrassment prevents them from ordering dishes they want to try. I'm partnering with McDonald's to help bring that fear to an end, so fans don't miss out on all the delicious delicacies they might love but aren't sure how to pronounce."
It comes as McDonald's announced that the long-awaited Double Filet-O-Fish will be catch of the day in UK restaurants from July 1. A Double Filet-O-Fish will cost £5.29 and a Double Filet-O-Fish Everyday Value Meal will be priced at £7.39
The research from McDonald's also found the top 10 most mispronounced menu items included:
1. Bruschetta (broo-SKET-a) 62%

2. Acai (ah-sigh-EE) - 53%
3. Pho (FUH) - 53%
4. Gnocchi (NYOH-kee) - 52%

5. Croissant (KWAH-sohn) 38%
6. Charcuterie (shar-COO-ter-ee) - 37%
7. Filet-O-Fish (Fil-LAY) - 33%

8. Quinoa (KEEN-wah) - 29%
9. Espresso (es-PRESS-oh) - 22%
10. Mojito (mo-HEE-toe) - 15%

Spanish overtakes French to become most popular foreign language GCSE

Spanish has become the most popular foreign language for GCSE students after overtaking French for the first time. The popularity of Spain as a holiday destination, as well as its standing as a 'global language' may have contributed to the GCSE's success, it was suggested. But while the increase in Spanish entries has been seen as a positive step, there are concerns about the impact of declines in entries for other foreign languages, such as French and German. Entries for GCSE Spanish were up 2.6% this year – from 133,395 in 2024 to 136,871 in 2025, figures published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) – which cover England, Wales and Northern Ireland – show. Meanwhile, entries for French dropped to 132,808 – down 1.4% from 134,651 last year. German continued to see a fall in entries – down 7.0% this year compared with 2024 (from 35,913 to 33,391 entries). Vicky Gough, British Council schools adviser, said the growing popularity of Spanish shows 'real appetite for language learning'. She said: 'We need the success of Spanish reflected across all languages through exchanges, cultural programmes and real-world connections that demonstrate why languages matter. 'Our research also reveals a significant socioeconomic gap: pupils in the top fifth of the most advantaged state schools in England are around 32% more likely to take a language GCSE than their peers elsewhere, meaning many young people from less privileged backgrounds miss out on opportunities their peers benefit from. 'At a time of increasing global tension, helping young people connect across borders, build friendships and foster trust has never been more important. 'We must ensure access to language learning for all, it remains a powerful gateway to opportunity and a more connected future.' Jill Duffy, chief executive of the OCR exam board and chairwoman of the JCQ board, said: 'Spanish is a massive global language, lots of people around the world speak it and also, as we know, Spain is a popular holiday destination for Brits, so that might have contributed to Spanish overtaking French this year.' Pepe Di'Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said falls in French and German are a 'source of concern'. He said: 'The rising popularity of Spanish is great to see, but we cannot escape the fact that over the past 20 years or so there has been a massive decline in language take-up overall. 'It is imperative that we find ways of promoting a love of languages or we will become an increasingly monolingual society with consequent implications for our ability to trade and travel abroad.' Sir Ian Bauckham, chief of England's exam regulator, Ofqual, said the numbers taking German are now 'really quite small.' He told PA: 'I think it's important that students continue to have the opportunities for speaking languages and learning languages, not only because of the intrinsic enjoyment that the process of learning a language and being able to speak it can bring, but also because it's important that young people leave school with the ability to communicate with speakers of other languages in other countries.'

One third would end date over condiment clash as new sauce revealed

Exactly 32% made the culinary admission, with only half (54%) believing a relationship can survive differing sauce loyalties The country is fiercely divided over sauce habits, with two-fifths (40%) saying sauce preferences reveal something about a person's personality. According to research from Aldi, the nation is also home to a significant clique of enthusiastic sauce mixologists. Seven in ten enjoy mixing sauces, with ketchup and mayo the go-to pairing for 43%. Three in five (59%) go a step further, admitting to whipping up their own custom blends at home – with almost a quarter (24%) doing so 'regularly'. The Mighty Trio is Aldi's answer to the BBQ juggling act (Image: Will Ireland/PinPep) In light of the research, this summer, Aldi is giving the nation the culinary contraption they never knew they needed: a limited-edition triple-sauce bottle that squeezes ketchup, mayo and mustard at the same time for one perfect, triple-hit mouthful. The three-in-one bottle, named The Mighty Trio, launches as new research reveals just how passionate – and opinionated - Brits are about their condiments. Unsurprisingly, almost three quarters (72%) of Brits would therefore be eager to try Aldi's new invention serving all three sauces at once. To enter the competition to win a trio sauce bottle, shoppers should email mightytrio@ with their full name before 28 th August 2025. But not everyone's mixing it up. A quarter prefer to keep sauces separate. 15% say ketchup on pasta should be outlawed altogether – just one of the many 'sauce crimes' Brits have witnessed. Top culinary offenses include drizzling sauce on ice cream (14%), a roast dinner (12%), fruit (11%) and even cereal (10%). But the judgement doesn't stop at what you pair your sauce with. Three in five Brits are dippers, and over two in five (45%) admit to secretly judging how others apply sauce – whether it's the technique, the quantity, or the 'on top' approach rather than dipping. Perhaps this explains why we don't trust others to sauce our food – with 72% saying they feel anxious when someone else does it for them. Almost one in three (32%) have even skipped asking for a sauce at a restaurant to avoid judgement, and 42% of Brits have confessed to packing their own bottles when travelling or dining out. But the ultimate dealbreaker this summer? 84% of Brits would consider walking out of a BBQ with no ketchup. For those prepping the perfect Bank Holiday gathering, Aldi's range of condiments, including Bramwells Tomato Ketchup (89p, 550g), Bramwells Squeezy Real Mayonnaise (95p, 500ml) and Bramwells American Style Mustard (99p, 290g), means no one will be left disappointed. Aldi UK's Julie Ashfield said: 'It's clear Brits love their condiments, with a huge number of sauce mixologists whipping up their own concoctions at home. 'The Mighty Trio is Aldi's answer to the BBQ juggling act, giving you all three classic condiments in one easy squeeze. It's fun, practical and the ultimate hack for anyone who likes their burgers, hot dogs or chips with a little bit of everything!'

We ranked all of McDonald's burgers and best one is 'absolutely unreal'

Whether you're a Big Mac enthusiast, or a lover of McNuggets, everyone will undoubtedly have a hot take about your McDonald's order. The fast food chain is beloved across the globe, and while the UK menu might change every six weeks, a number of items remain the same throughout the year. From the Filet-O-Fish (which IS a burger, according to McDonald's), to the McPlant there's bound to be something on the menu for everyone — but which is the top choice when it comes to burgers? If you ask the internet, the people of Reddit claim that it's the Double Quarter Pounder that's the superior order. The sizeable burger features two beef patties, two slices of cheese, onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard. Others say you can't go wrong with a Big Mac, while some will forever be obsessed with the long lost McRib (which actually made a comeback in October 2024…) In celebration of National Burger Day this year, the team at Metro shared their honest thoughts about the classic burger offering at McDonald's, ranking 10 of them from 'best' to 'worst'. So without further ado, here's our honest verdict: The cheeseburger is a classic for a reason, it's got a little bit of everything – beef, cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup in a soft bun. For those that are really hungry, you can upgrade it to a double cheeseburger and you can add and take away ingredients that you aren't keen on. For Metro's specialist food writer, Courtney Pochin, the cheeseburger is the superior option when ordering from Maccies. She's been enjoying them since her Happy Meal days, but she can do without the onions or mustard. 'Sometimes less is more and the cheeseburger is proof of that. It doesn't need bacon, it doesn't need more than one patty, or extra bread, it's just right as it is,' she says. And she's not the only one who thinks its top tier, as Metro's video editor, Chris Rickett agrees. 'The cheeseburger is absolutely unreal value to this day. Carries the torch of pickles, onion and mustard being bedrock ingredients of a diner-style burger. Can go double if you want decadence, but triple is vulgar and throws the ratio too far off. 'No matter what your Maccies order is, adding a cheeseburger to it is always a wise choice. A perfect squishy delight.' Deputy news editor, Liam Coleman, and first-person and opinion editor Jess Austin are also team cheeseburger, with Liam saying: 'McDonald's best burger is the double cheeseburger with extra cheese (IMO)'. Jess was also keen for more cheese (who isn't TBH) as she revealed her go-to order is a double cheeseburger, which she 'hacks' by ordering cheese bites and adding these into the burger for what is sure to be a delicious stomach ache in the making. Following in closely behind the cheeseburger is the Quarter Pounder with Cheese, and Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese. This shouldn't really surprise anyone, as they're essentially bigger versions of the cheeseburger, containing a little bit more of everything. Assistant lifestyle editor, Jessica Lindsay, and head of social video, Alex Goldsmith, both praised the burger, saying 'you can't go wrong' if you order one. And since McDonald's recently introduced their new 'best burger' method of cooking beef, the Quarter Pounder flavour has improved, with a 'slight creamy, dairy note'. Yum! The Big Mac is an institution at McDonald's, so we're aware that not crowning it victorious might upset a few people. But, top three is where it's at for us. Two beef patties, cheese, lettuce, onions, pickles and that famous sauce are stacked between three pieces of bun. It's big, it's iconic, and it's safe to say people who love it take it very seriously. For Metro's resident fashion and beauty expert Sarah Bradbury, there's nothing better. 'I loveee a Big Mac,' she tells us. 'When I'm ridiculously hungover, it's the only thing that makes me feel both better and worse at the same time. I always add extra lettuce and pickles. For me, I think it's the nostalgic taste of the sauce and gorgeous, melted cheese.' Deputy first-person and opinion editor Ross McCafferty agrees that it's all about the Big Mac Sauce. 'It's the sauce that makes it — often imitated, never replicated, the absurdly sweet condiment elevates what could simply be dry mouthful of carby stodge into something that is rightly beloved all over the world, and the perfect hangover cure.' Taking fourth place in the rankings, this chicken burger divided the Metro team, as Courtney and Jess Austin were big fans, but Sarah wasn't so keen. Launched in 2021, the McSpicy was marketed as McDonald's hottest burger yet and featured a chicken fillet marinated in a spicy coating, with lettuce and mayo in a toasted bun. Earlier this year the chain they brought back an even hotter version, as they teamed up with Frank's Red Hot Sauce. But it's the OG one we're concerned with here… 'I consider my tolerance pretty average when it comes to spice — things like jalapeño peppers and buffalo hot sauce don't bother me, but I do tend to opt for milder dishes most of the time,' Courtney said. 'It's a solid choice for your McDonald's order. There's a generous amount of chicken, a nice crispy coating with good crunch and just the right amount of lettuce. 'If you like it hot, this one won't be for you, as my mouth certainly wasn't on fire at any point, but it's pleasantly warm and did have me reaching for the little bottle of milk that came along with it once or twice.' She adds: 'The only real downside to this burger and why this one doesn't rank any higher for us is that it doesn't come with any cheese, and as I'm sure you've probably worked out by now, we're BIG fans of cheese.' Pollock fish in crispy breadcrumbs, a slice of cheese, and tartare sauce are placed inside a steamed bun to create this one. The Filet-O-Fish is pretty divisive, as some won't consider it a burger, but others will. For Sarah, it doesn't really matter what it's called, as the Filet-O-Fish is a favourite of hers. 'Fish fingers, chips and beans was the ultimate comfort food for me after school as a kid — and now after work as a (lazy) adult. I just feel the mix of cheese, tartare sauce and chunky fish square is equally as comforting. I don't really understand half the slice of cheese, but I'll take it.' Lifestyle editor Kristina Beanland is also a Filet-O-Fish advocate, agreeing that it's deserving of its middle place in this ranking. 'The Filet-O-Fish will never be my favourite burger (shout out to my one and only, the Philly Cheese Stack) but it's a reliable mid-table burger that ought to be recognised. 'It was my childhood order, and my intro into tartare sauce, a highly underrated condiment. In the same way that a fish finger sarnie rarely disappoints, whether at a pub lunch, or making a Birdseye one at home, the Filet-O-Fish is simple, yet delicious. 'It doesn't need all the frills of pickles and a special sauce, it is what it is: comforting, not too filling, and a solid alternative to a meatier option. And while there is never one ready to immediately chuck onto your tray, it's well worth the wait.' And if you're a fan, there's now also a double version of the classic, so you can enjoy even more of your fave. We're passed the half-way mark now in our rankings and while they start to go downhill from here, this burger is a solid 'Mc-Meh'. The burger contains chicken breast fillet in a crispy coating, iceberg lettuce, black pepper mayo and a sourdough-style sesame topped bun. But none of this impressed Ross very much. He had been excited to try the crispy chicken burger when it hit the menu in November 2022, but ultimately found it lacking. 'Both bun and mayo are clearly meant to be a bougie version of their more humble (and cheaper) McChicken varieties, but the mayo lacks that so-bad-it's-good sweetness and the bun doesn't really add anything beyond a pretty pattern. 'As for the chicken itself, it doesn't really taste much different from the Chicken Legend which was bumped off the menu. It certainly won't be this I'm reaching for when I'm next in need of a Maccies fix.' Cheeseburger Quarter Pounder with Cheese Big Mac McSpicy Filet-O-Fish McCrispy McChicken McPlant Vegetable Deluxe Hamburger The McChicken Sandwich is one of the fast food chain's original offerings, and it was rather tough to work out where to place it on this list. For SEO Reporter Elizabeth Atkin, it was the 'best' chicken burger McDonald's sells. She said: 'I like the simplicity of the McChicken — a bit of lettuce, plain mayo and a simple sesame seed bun is all its needs.' And while her review certainly earned it points, it was knocked down a few pegs by scathing comments from others. 'I've watched with alarm as the McChicken has shrunk faster than the value of the pound,' says Ross. And he's not the only one who wasn't pleased. Chris declared its the worst burger on the menu — and definitely not worth the money. 'There are times in my life when consuming the crisp fiver exchanged for it would have been less dry than the McChicken sandwich,' he admits. McDonald's vegan burger has been hailed a 'game-changer' by fans, as it's supposed to taste like meat, while being completely plant-based. The patty was co-developed with Beyond Meat and is served on a sesame seed bun, with a vegan alternative to cheese, mustard, ketchup vegan sandwich sauce, onions, pickles, lettuce, and tomato. Courtney was pretty taken with it the first time she tried it, as she felt she wouldn't have known it was vegan, if she hadn't been told. 'It's almost indistinguishable in terms of taste from a regular cheeseburger.' But for the actual veggies and vegans among us, it's not proved such a hit. Martina Andretta, Metro's head of growth, felt McDonald's veggie offerings were 'super weak' and admitted she'd prefer a Vegan Chicken Royale from Burger King over either of the options from Maccies as she felt they were both 'too dry'. But when pressed to pick the better of the two, it was the McPlant that fared slightly better in her favour. The second of McDonald's vegan offerings features red pesto veggie goujons, sandwich sauce, and shredded lettuce in a sesame topped bun. It even sounds pretty dry. It's not very hard to see why this one didn't manage to garner Martina's favour. All that said, it's still a step up from our least favourite burger… Coming in last is the plain old hamburger, which has no cheese, no mayo, no salad… and is no fun, really. More Trending It's a beef patty, onions, mustard and ketchup in a soft bun. No one from Metro picked it as their go-to option, hence why it's at the bottom of the list. The verdict was unanimous: Anyone who is ordering one of these from McDonald's really needs to live a little. It's not been available long enough to be deemed a true classic, but McDonald's recently added the Big Arch burger to its menu and we felt it deserved a mention. The star of the show with this burger is the Big Arch sauce, which features McDonald's ketchup, mustard and pickle juice. There's also some pepper in there and a few other ingredients, though the others are being kept top secret. The signature sauce is squeezed over the top and bottom halves of a new toasted sesame and poppy seed bun, which is then loaded with crispy onions on one side and slivered raw onions on the other, before shredded lettuce and pickles are added too. A slice of white cheddar and a Quarter Pounder patty is placed on each half, with one side being topped with a third and final slice of cheese. This sandwiches nicely between the two beef patties as the box is closed and the two sides of the burger come together to create the Big Arch. The massive burger, bigger than a Big Mac, is meant to be the chain's 'most McDonald's burger yet'. Courtney Pochin gave it a try, here's what she thought: 'Dare I say it, I actually think it's better than a Big Mac. For me, the flavours are more interesting. 'The sauce is so quintessentially McDonald's in flavour. The combination of the slightly sweet ketchup, tangy pickle juice and punchy mustard is comfortingly familiar and yet somehow manages to taste new at the same time. I'm going to need them to bottle and sell this immediately, or at the very least let me order a pot of it to dunk my fries into. 'The Quarter Pounder patties give the whole thing a very meaty flavour, which is stronger than what you'd get with standard McDonald's burgers, and there's a very satisfying crunch from the crispy onions that elevates the overall eating experience.' She added: 'If I had to give it a rating out of 10, I'd give it a nine. I'm a big fan of it as far as McDonald's burgers go, but it doesn't get full marks as there's one big issue with it… it's incredibly messy.'
