Telstra customers threaten to boycott after third price hike since August: 'Just lost me as a customer'
Telstra customers are threatening to cancel their phone and internet plans after the telco announced a new price hike. Telstra revealed most of its postpaid mobile, mobile data, and home and small business internet plans would become more expensive from July.
The company said the change would help improve its mobile network performance and experience, as well as the "reliability and security of our services". However, customers aren't happy about being slugged with another service going up in price.
"You've just lost me as a customer," said one person who claimed to have been with the telco for more than 25 years.

"You've done nothing to justify the raise in prices. I get nothing but the privilege of paying more for the same thing. I'm a pensioner. I CAN'T.
"I am soooo pissed! I'm an inch away from tears."
Another customer ripped into the telco, saying: "Typical Telstra charges more for no extra service, haven't gotten anything for the last 5 years of price hikes, and the service isn't any better."
"Again?" added a third. "We were only talking about how they put prices up, not so long ago. Oh boy, how time flies when we are all having fun!"
This price change comes just a few months after the telco raised prices for prepaid customers by up to $4 back in October, and again for postpaid customers in August.
Optus recently announced a similar price jump of $2 to $6 for monthly mobile phone plans, which will kick in on June 4.The telco revealed most plans will rise by between $3 to $5 per month.
Mobile Bundle 25GB will go from $52 to $57
Basic Plan 50GB will go from $65 to $70
Essential Plan 180GB will go from $75 to $80
The Data Bundle 10GB will go from $10 to $15
Small plan 30GB will go from $25 to $30
Medium plan 100GB will go from $58 to $65 and will increase from 75GB
Basic plan 25 speed will go from $89 to $93
Essential plan 50 speed will go from $105 to $109
Premium plan 100 speed will go from $110 to $113
These changes will kick in on July 1.
Telstra also said its Premium 100/40 speed Small Business internet tier will actually drop in price from $140 to $125.
The Ultimate plan with 250 speed will be $1 cheaper, and the Ultrafast plan 1000 speed will fall from $150 to $139.
The lowest-priced starter mobile, starter NBN internet, and premium mobile plans won't be changed.
The company's pre-paid mobile plans, as well as its home phone, satellite, and 5G home internet plans will also remain unchanged.
Telstra group executive Brad Whitcomb said the company hoped that by increasing prices by up to $5, it would allow them to make big changes.
"[We're] increasing our mobile network investment by $800 million over the next four years to extend our leadership and deliver customers the most advanced, resilient and reliable mobile network in the country," he said.
"Some customers will start to notice improvements to their speeds and overall experience from later this year."
Telstra hopes to soon launch a satellite to mobile messaging capability, which would allow customers with eligible devices to send and receive messages from "almost anywhere in Australia where they don't have mobile coverage".
Whitcomb added that the changes to internet plans will allow it to respond to "increased data usage" as Aussies continue to connect smart devices to the web.
"This includes 24/7 network monitoring to help protect against scams, 4G back-up to help keep customers connected in an outage and support from our local teams," he said.

Tax time is just around the corner, and many Aussies will be looking to make some last-minute purchases to help maximise their returns. An accountant has revealed one common item that you'll generally be able to claim a tax deduction on: your work bag. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) allows taxpayers to claim a deduction for a handbag if they purchase it to carry work items, such as a laptop, tablet, work papers or diaries. Your bag will need to be suitable for carrying work equipment, mainly used for work, plus you'll need to have records to prove your purchase. Aussie tax guru Kiki told Yahoo Finance that if you used the bag for personal purposes, you'll need to apportion the cost between work and personal use accordingly. Let's say the bag is for $500, then you have to depreciate it over its useful life.' Kiki said people who claimed luxury bags would sometimes raise eyebrows. 'Are you really using that expensive bag for work? And if you are, are you only using it for work and not using it for personal reasons?' she said. If you are able to establish that you use the bag for work, you can only tax deduct the portion that is used for work. 'So if I buy a Louis Vuitton bag, I can't claim the full amount as a tax deduction, because there's a high chance I also use that bag on the weekend,' she said. 'Since it's likely over $300, I'd also need to depreciate it over its useful life rather than claim it upfront.' The ATO said you can't claim a deduction for bags or cases if you mainly used them for private purposes, such as carrying your lunch. You also can't claim if someone else supplied you with the bag. Along with being able to claim a handbag in selected circumstances, the ATO lets you claim briefcases, laptop bags, satchels and luggage. You can find out more about the rules here. If you're looking for ways to maximise your tax return, bringing forward tax-deductible purchases could be worth considering. That could be things like a new desk or monitor for your home office, any subscriptions you use for work, or work-related technology. 'Whether it's a bag or stationery or a new phone for work, you're better off buying it before 30 June because you can tax deduct it in your 2025 Australian tax return,' Kiki told Yahoo Finance. Spending on an investment property, such as a depreciation report, or even engaging an accountant to do your tax return can also be tax deductible. 'If you are looking to engage an accountant, consider engaging them before 30 June, pay them the fees so that you can claim that fee in your tax return,' Kiki said. If you prepaid $2,000 worth of tax-deductible expenses, for example, and your income was above $45,000, your tax rate would be at least 32 per cent. Major ATO change just weeks away as taxpayers warned over new rules: 'Will cost more'
Taxpayers have been reminded about a major change that's coming in less than a month. From July 1, you won't be able to make a tax deduction on interest charged by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for late or underpayments. Up until this point, you were able to reduce your taxable income through this method. However, the Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Incentives and Integrity) Act 2025 has kicked into gear, and the next financial year will see this perk removed. "These changes will mean it will cost more to carry a tax debt and, while taxpayers won't feel this change until next tax time... [it's] so important to get on top of your tax obligations," ATO Assistant Commissioner Anita Challen said. The SIC, meanwhile, applied when an incorrect self-assessment led to a shortfall in tax paid. The ATO would apply the SIC to the shortfall amount. The GIC rate is currently 11.17 per cent per annum, while the SIC is lower at 7.17 per cent per annum. Both charges apply on a daily compounding was brought in to create a fairer playing field when it came to paying your tax and any charges against you. The ATO said taxpayers who did the right thing had been "disadvantaged" relative to those who delayed their payments and, as a result, incurred interest fees. Hive Wise founder Hripsime Demirdjian told Yahoo Finance that it was also designed to help the ATO crack down on its $50 billion in collectable tax debt. The change is expected to boost ATO revenue by $500 million in 2026 and 2027. If you were charged interest by the ATO before the July 1 deadline, this can still be claimed as a tax deduction when you submit your tax return this year. This will come pre-filled on your tax return if you lodge online using myTax. However, any interest charged after July 1 will not be able to be claimed. Challen had some blunt words of advice ahead of the July 1 change. "If you have a tax debt you've been putting off paying – now is the time to pay," she said. "Setting aside your GST, Pay as you go (PAYG) withholding and super from your business's cash flow in a separate bank account can help ensure you have the funds available when it's time to pay." The ATO said if you're unable to pay on time and in full, then you can contact the tax office to set up a payment plan. If you're under an agreed plan, you will avoid any debt recovery actions from the ATO. "Interest will continue to accrue if you are paying your ATO debt off through a payment plan, but as you make payments, the amount of interest you are charged will also decrease," Challen added. "If you cannot pay on time and in full, you should also discuss your financial position with your accountant or finance provider to understand if there are alternative methods of funding payment of tax debts that might have a lower interest rate.
