Nagpur up 5 spots in swachh ranking after NMC's appeal

Time of India9 hours ago
Nagpur: The city's ranking in the Swachh Bharat Survekshan improved following an appeal by the civic body. The Union ministry of housing and urban affairs has now placed Nagpur at rank 22A (out of 40), up from its earlier position of 27.

The revised ranking was confirmed on its national dashboard, with municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari sharing the update on Wednesday.
Nagpur's state ranking also saw a rise — from 29 to 25A out of 414 urban local bodies in Maharashtra. The city's overall score now stands at 9,836 out of 12,500, up from the previous 9,328, additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant told TOI. To a query, Pant explained that since Nashik already held the 22nd rank, Nagpur has been assigned 22A to reflect its equal standing.
As a result, the 27th position in the national ranking list now remains vacant, the Swachh Survekshan results website stated.
The improvement followed NMC's detailed representation under the guidance of Chaudhari, pointing out discrepancies in the initial assessment. "We highlighted major mismatches in legacy data related to daily waste collection and vehicle tracking over the past three years. After verification, a fresh site visit was conducted, and our claims were accepted," said Pant.
Key metrics show substantial progress. Door-to-door waste collection surged from 30% to 90%, while segregation at source improved dramatically from 1% to 60%. However, waste processing, which was earlier marked at 100%, was revised to 60% following a stricter re-evaluation. The city has now also earned one star under the Garbage-Free City (GFC) certification — a benchmark it failed to achieve earlier this year.

"Nagpur's score was already contentious. About 30% in door-to-door collection and 1% at source segregation were surprising. The scores in these two parameters increased to 90% and 60%, which gave us 500 in GFC certification were we had earlier scored zero," Kaustav Chatterjee, Swachhata ambassador said.
The earlier ranking sparked sharp criticism from citizens and within the civic administration, where officials admitted that weak inter-departmental coordination and poor documentation hampered performance.
The latest recognition reflects growing momentum in the city's cleanliness efforts.
Even in Swachh Survekshan 2023, Nagpur was placed 86th among 400 cities with a population above one lakh. The NMC objected to this categorisation, insisting that Nagpur should have been evaluated in the million-plus category.
Major recent initiatives include the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign, Backlane Cleanliness Drive, compressed biogas facility, C&D waste plant, and biomining project at Bhandewadi.
Citizen-led programs like 'One Date, One Hour', Swachh Mohalla, Clean Market initiatives, Eco Bricks, and awareness campaigns in schools have further boosted community participation.
In a statement, Chaudhari said Nagpur's progress was acknowledged in a recent central govt report for its participatory initiatives. He added that NMC now aims to push for a Top 10 rank in upcoming surveys by intensifying cleanliness efforts across all zones.

2x Tariffs on India a 'warning' to China which may also face the same, says Trump

Donald Trump (AP) TOI correspondent from Washington: Punitive secondary tariffs on India is a warning shot aimed at China, which could also face similar tariffs US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday, amid indications that New Delhi is becoming collateral damage in a great power fracas. Asked at a White House event why New Delhi is being singled out for secondary tariffs when China is buying more Russian oil than India does, Trump interrupted the questioner twice to say "It's okay" before warning there will be more secondary sanctions against countries buying Russian oil and gas. "It's only been eight hours (since he announced secondary tariffs on India) so let's see what going to see a lot more. You're going to see so much secondary sanctions," he said. Asked another time if China could face similar penalties for buying Russian oil "It may happen. I don't know, I can't tell you yet. But we did it with India. We are doing it probably with a couple of others, one of them could be China." Trump's feckless approach towards China has been called out by several commentators, including allies like Steve Bannon, even as the MAGA Supremo had turned on Russia even though it wasn't too long ago that he was taunted as "Putin Puppet." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This new air conditioner cools down a room in just seconds News of the Discovery The pussyfooting on Beijing appears to be on account of the realisation that it is China that holds the aces rather than US. Trump himself acknowledged that India is the second largest buyer of Russian oil behind China ("They're very close to China in terms of the purchase of oil from Russia"), but he indicated that the shock delivered to India, a country he has frequently referred to as a "friend," may have have jolted Russia and China to resume talks with Washington. "I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but we've had very productive talks today," he said, referring to his envoy Steve Witkoff's parleys in Moscow. Trump also confirmed that the Witkoff visit had set the stage for his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the next few days, although he was chary about the outcome of the summit because he had been disappointed before. The date and place of the meeting has not yet been confirmed. Trump's remarks left the impression that he was using punitive tariffs on India as a warning to China and Russia in an effort to sunder their energy ties and bring the war on Ukraine to an end. While secondary tariffs on India are set to kick in on August 27, a US trade delegation is scheduled to visit India days before that.

National Handloom Day 2025: Date, Theme, Origin, Significance, and Celebrations

National Handloom Day in India 2025: The Indian handloom industry is one of the oldest and most vibrant cottage industries globally, with 95% of the world's handwoven fabric coming from India. National Handloom Day marks the launch of the Swadeshi Movement on August 7, 1905, celebrating its enduring legacy and crucial role in India's struggle for independence. This day in India originated with the Swadeshi Movement, which began on August 7, 1905, during India's struggle for independence from British control. It was a reaction to the British government's decision to split Bengal, and handlooms became a potent symbol of resistance to British authority. By promoting Indian crafts and empowering local craftsmen, it aimed to revive Indian culture and traditions while also encouraging the use of Indian languages, arts, and crafts. In modern times, the observance of National Handloom Day was inaugurated on August 7, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and this date was chosen to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the day and will be celebrated on 7th August 2025, with the theme 'Weaving Innovation into Tradition.' This year's celebrations will take place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi and will be attended by the Hon'ble President of India, who will present the prestigious Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and National Handloom Awards for 2024 to a total of 24 awardees, including 5 Sant Kabir awardees and 19 national awardees. .@TexMinIndia launches 'Haat on Wheels' as part of 11th National Handloom Day celebrations Union Minister of Textiles @girirajsinghbjp inaugurates the Exclusive Handloom Expo and the 'Haat on Wheels' at Handloom Haat, Janpath 💠Government is reinforcing its commitment to… — PIB India (@PIB_India) August 6, 2025 It honours the skills and workmanship of handloom weavers and seeks to promote handloom products domestically and globally.
