The Lok Sabha on Thursday will begin its proceedings with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present an explanatory statement, placing reasons for "immediate legislation by promulgation" of the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.According to a list of business issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is scheduled to move amendments to the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022, for consideration and passage in the House.The Union Sports Minister will also move the National Sports Governance Bill , 2025, in the lower house of the Parliament.The National Sports Governance Bill aims to "provide for the development and promotion of sports, welfare measures for sportspersons, ethical practices based on basic universal principles of good governance, ethics and fair play of the Olympic and sports movement, the Olympic Charter, the Paralympic Charter, international best practices and established legal standards and to provide for the resolution of sports grievances and sports disputes in a unified, equitable and effective manner and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto, be taken into consideration."Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will move the Indian Ports Bill of 2025, which aims to consolidate the law relating to ports, promote integrated port development, facilitate ease of doing business and ensure the optimum utilisation of India's coastline.The bill aims to "establish and empower State Maritime Boards for effective management of ports other than major ports; establish the Maritime State Development Council for fostering structured growth and development of the port sector; provide for the management of pollution, disaster, emergencies, security, safety, navigation, and data at ports.""Ensure compliance with India's obligations under international instruments to which it is a party; take measures for the conservation of ports; provide for adjudicatory mechanisms for the redressal of port-related disputes; and address matters connected therewith or incidental thereto, be taken into consideration," the list of business read.Furthermore, various reports of committee on the welfare of scheduled caste and scheduled tribes will be presented in the lower house, where Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Faggan Singh Kulaste will present fourth report on the subject "Reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the services and in the allotment of commercial and residential accommodation of Delhi Development Authority (DDA)."Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Daggumalla Prasada Rao will present the fifth report on the subject "Role of autonomous bodies/educational Institutions like Central Universities, Engineering Colleges, IIMs, IITs, Medical Institutes in socio-economic development and implementation of reservation policy for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes with specific reference to University of Delhi."BJP MPs Radha Mohan Singh and Virendra Singh will present the reports of the standing committee on defence, highlighting the action taken by the government on the recommendations in the previous reports on demands for grants of the Ministry of Defence for the year 2024-25.Earlier on Wednesday, the Parliament passed two key maritime bills in a single day, a first for the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and the second one is the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, leading the way for a modern, efficient and globally aligned maritime policy framework in India.The Lok Sabha cleared the 'Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024', aimed at streamlining maritime governance with a modern and internationally compliant approach.

Lovlina alleges 'humiliating behaviour' by BFI official, he 'respectfully' denies

TOI has exclusively obtained Lovlina's two-page complaint, in which the reigning middleweight world champion and a recipient of Khel Ratna and , accused Malik of "demeaning" her achievements and "humiliating" her during a Target Olympic Podium Scheme meeting held via Zoom on July 8 last month. She described the experience as one that "left me deeply hurt, disheartened, and questioned the respect and dignity we, as women athletes, truly receive". Malik denied all allegations and stated that the federation remained committed to supporting its athletes while upholding fairness, transparency and equal opportunity. I respectfully and categorically deny the allegations levelled. The call in question was thoroughly professional in its entirety. It was attended by officials from SAI and TOPS and was officially recorded by the host. The same recording is with the respective officials for review. Matters raised by Lovlina were duly noted and addressed in line with BFI's established policies, which apply uniformly to all athletes." In response, IOA has formed a three-member committee under the ministry's directives. The committee includes TOPS CEO Nachhatar Singh Johal, table tennis legend and IOA's athletes commission vice-chairperson Sharath Kamal and a female advocate. Tasked with submitting a report within two weeks, the committee has yet to release its findings despite nearly a month passing. Additionally, Ritu Pathik, SAI's executive director of the TEAMS division, is investigating the matter independently. In her complaint, Lovlina stated: "I write this letter not just as an athlete, but as a woman who has spent years carrying the hopes of a nation in the boxing ring — with pride, pain and perseverance. What happened during a recent official meeting with the BFI and the TOPS on July 8, 2024, at 12pm has left me deeply hurt, disheartened. In the presence of respected individuals from TOPS, boxing coach Pranamika Boro, (other) BFI members, Mr Arun Malik, an official of BFI, humiliated me in a way no athlete should ever have to endure. He raised his voice at me, spoke in an aggressively demeaning manner, and blatantly told me to 'shut up, lower your head and do as we say'. His words were not only disrespectful but also carried an alarming tone of gender-discriminatory and authoritarian dominance — something that no one, especially a woman who has brought honour to the nation, should be subjected to." Lovlina, who is part of the Indian boxing contingent for the forthcoming World Championships in Liverpool, UK, from Sept 4 to 14, added: "In a space where I expected professionalism, support and mutual respect, I was made to feel small, unheard, and powerless. It was not just a personal insult — it was an attack on every woman athlete who dreams of standing tall, both in and outside the ring... I request the authorities for a fair and swift inquiry into Malik's conduct during the meeting and necessary disciplinary action if these actions are found to be in violation of acceptable conduct. " The dispute arose when Lovlina requested the expertise of Pranamika Boro, a long-serving coach of the Indian women's boxing team and part of the country's contingent for the Paris Olympics 2024, to be her personal coach at the elite national camp in NIS Patiala and to allow her to train abroad in Europe in preparation for the Liverpool Worlds. It is alleged that Malik rejected her proposals before the TOPS division could consider them. The TOPS meeting was convened at Lovlina's special request to discuss her demands. When contacted, Lovlina told TOI, "I don't wish to comment at this juncture when an investigation is on. I have full faith in the committee and its findings. I will wait for the report to come before publicly commenting."

US President Donald Trump's sweeping new tariff on India is likely to echo in Parliament on Thursday, with the Congress moving an adjournment motion for a discussion on the "unfair" imposition, even as Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to "override the interests" of the citizens. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday escalated his tariff offensive against India by slapping an additional 25 percent duty and subsequently doubling it to 50 percent on Indian goods over New Delhi's continuous imports of Russian oil. India condemned the "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable" move that is likely to hit sectors such as textiles, marine and leather exports hard. The Opposition also extended its support to the Centre, with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi describing Mr Trump's announcement as "economic blackmail". In his notice, Congress MP Hibi Eden said the US President's action citing India's continuous purchase and resale of Russian oil was "politically motivated". "The imposition of an additional 25 per cent tariff by US President Donald Trump on Indian goods, raising the total to 50 per cent. This action, citing India's continued purchase and resale of Russian oil, has been rightly termed unfair and politically motivated," he said. The Congress MP also expressed concern over the impact of the decision on Indian marine exports, particularly the shrimp industry, which contributed significantly to India's seafood exports. "This 'Trump tax' threatens to break the spine of India's marine exports, particularly the shrimp industry, which earned USD 4.88 billion in 2024-25-66 per cent of total seafood exports. The new US tariffs on Indian shrimp exports, coupled with Ecuador's and Guatemala's lower tariffs and geographical proximity to the US, are significantly impacting India's competitiveness in this vital sector," he said. "Immediate intervention is essential: the government must launch an Export Promotion Mission, offer special financial packages to affected exporters, and ensure strong support from Indian banks to help firms withstand this economic shock. Additionally, timely resolution is needed for shipments already in transit, now caught in uncertainty," he added. The Congress has already sought a comprehensive reset of India's foreign policy and administration. On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha was adjourned amid continuous noisy protests by the Congress and other opposition parties demanding discussion on the Bihar electoral revision.
