Rangers tell Russell Martin exactly how much of £20m US investment will be in his transfer budget

Daily Recorda day ago

The 49ers vowed to inject an initial £20m cash into the Ibrox coffers and the new boss has learned how much he will get
Patrick Stewart has promised Russell Martin he'll be handed a significant chunk of the £20million set to be injected by Rangers' new American owners.
Andrew Cavenagh and his partners from the San Francisco 49ers completed their £75million takeover last week and immediately announced plans to plough another substantial eight-figure sum into the Gers coffers.

That will take place when a share issue, underwritten by the US consortium, is launched on June 23.

But plans on how the cash will be used are already being drawn up and Martin has been assured he'll get plenty to spend.
Chief exec Stewart said: 'It's very public knowledge about the primary investment coming in. And obviously, that's going to be approved.
'It's going to be put up for approval on the 23rd of June at the EGM. So we're in discussions and have been in discussions with new ownership about how best to utilise that investment.
"Player trading is a key part of the club's model going forward.
'So a decent portion will be allocated towards player trading, but we're not going to get into specific amounts just now.'

It's been a busy week for the Ibrox hierarchy. Friday's takeover was followed on Monday by the news that new sporting director Kevin Thelwell had official taken up his post.
The appointment of Martin now completes the first stage of this summer's rebuild.
And Stewart - responding to criticism of the four-month wait to hire Philippe Clemen t's permanent replacement - added: 'Clearly the appointment of a head coach is a very significant step for the club.

"As I say, it's the culmination of several key steps that have been taking place over the last few months. We've been really focused on doing things in the right order.
'We've got experts making decisions rather than doing things out of sequence and rushing things through and possibly making the wrong choices.
'We've been really disciplined in terms of our process and it's the first time we've spoken face-to-face. There's been a lot of work going on in the background.'

Martin has fought off competition from Davide Ancelotti to land the top job at Ibrox.
The club worked it's way through a list of contenders to name the former Southampton coach as the club's 20th boss, with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Brian Priske and Francesco Farioli among the others quoted as being in the running.
But Stewart insists Martin was always their top pick.

'I'm really delighted to be introducing Russell to you as the new head coach of Rangers Football Club,' he said. 'Russell's appointment is the culmination of a series of steps we've been working on over the past few months since I joined Rangers.
'We started with the football review, which I spoke to the media about in January. This led to several insights and recommendations, including the need to modernise our operations and develop a clear footballing identity.
'Then the next step was to appoint a sporting director and Kevin, of course, was appointed in April and came into the building just this week. We also have been developing a clear football style and identity and that's work that's been going on behind the scenes.

"It's been led by Kevin and it's involved football people.
'As I say, we've now culminated in appointing Russell and in Russell we've got a head coach who aligns to the footballing style and identity that we've been developing.
'In addition to wanting a head coach who's going to excel in terms of the style that we're looking to play as a club, we also were looking for a head coach that's going to improve our culture, develop our squad and ultimately win matches. And Russell's been a standout candidate.
'This appointment is about building a winning team and a strong culture. Now, Russell's no stranger to our club, as you know, he's been a player here previously and we expect success and Russell knows that. We're really, really excited for his leadership and for him to get started.'

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims on Friday, Davide Ancelotti has made a major decision on his future and is teaming up with his dad Carlo once again. He posted on Twitter: "Davide Ancelotti joins Brazil staff with his father Carlo, decision made and contract signed." Ancelotti has already been his father's number two at Real Madrid, Napoli, Bayern Munich and Everton. But it appeared he was set to go out on his own at Rangers after months of speculation linking him with the top job at Ibrox. He had indicated that Rangers were his preferred choice but had a number of options to consider, with Spanish second division side Deportivo and Swiss outfit Basel reportedly interested. One of those other opportunities also included rejoining his father at Brazil after leaving Real Madrid and that's the decision he has reportedly made. Carlo Ancelotti's first match in charge of Brazil ended in a 0-0 draw with Ecuador on Thursday, which he still described as a "special" occasion. Chances were at a premium, with Brazil only mustering two shots on target. He said after the game: "I think the pitch conditions here made it a bit tricky to play a more intricate game from the back. "It was harder to control the ball. "That said, we had two very good chances, with Vinicius Jr, with Casemiro in the second half. "Yes, we could've done better in attack, but you've also got to take into account the strength of the opponent. "Ecuador played a very good game, just as we did... The journeys here are really long, that takes its toll a bit." Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager The draw keeps them fourth in World Cup qualification in South America with an encounter against Paraguay to come. The top six automatically qualify for next year's showpiece. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Steve Clarke admits Cieran Slicker wasn't ready for Scotland debut as boss issues goalkeeping SOS for Liechtenstein

With Liam kelly injured, Clarke will take teenager Callan McKenna and try to find a more experienced option who isn't on holiday Steve Clarke admits Cieran Slicker wasn't ready for his Scotland debut as he sent out a goalkeeping SOS for any Scottish keepers still in the country. Slicker was thrown in at the deep after just a couple of minutes of the 3-1 friendly defeat at home to Iceland. Angus Gunn suffered an injury with his first involvement and after Rangers stopper Liam Kelly had pulled out of the warm up, Slicker was given the nod from the bench ahead of Kilmarnock's Robby McCrorie. ‌ Ipswich keeper Slicker has played just NINE minute of football over the course of the season and it showed, as he sclaffed a clearance for Iceland's first goal, fumbled a corner that saw Lewis Ferguson put past him for the second and let Victor Palsson's header go straight through him for the third. ‌ With veteran Craig Gordon injured along with Tyencastle understudy Zander Clark, the Scotland boss isn't sure where he's going to find another one at this stage before flying to Liechtenstein for Monday's game. He'll try and find one to take alongside kid gloves Callan McKenna, but did admit he had sympathy for Slicker after a debut to forget. "It's difficult for Cieran. I feel for him," said Clarke. "He got thrown into a situation where he maybe wasn't quite ready for it. But Craig's injured, Liam Kelly's injured, Zander Clark was injured. "I mentioned back in March that it was something I thought might come back to bite us. The only good thing is it came in a friendly match. "I don't know (about Gunn's injury). If he comes off in the first couple of minutes then I imagine he's not going to play the next game. For sure I'll try and call up another goalkeeper. I've had young Callan McKenna who's just turned 18-years of age, training with us and he'll travel. I'll see if I can find another one somewhere in Scotland that's not on holiday. "It was a disappointing night didn't get off to a great start , we lost our No2 goalie in the warm up and then we lost our No1 goalie after a couple of minutes. We then immediately compound that by conceding the first goal. That made it difficult. "We created some chances then got back in the game. But conceded another poor goal which makes it a difficult night."

Rangers sporting director makes Russell Martin player signing pledge

The Englishman has been involved in every step of the search to find a replacement for Philippe Clement and is confident that Martin, the former MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton manager, is the right man to lead the Glasgow giants forward. He stressed that he and his staff would support the ex-Scotland internationalist in every way that they could and would not sanction the acquisition of any player without receiving his approval first. Read more: 'Put very simply, the way in which we will be organised is we've got a head coach and we've got a sporting director,' he said. 'Head coaches are responsible for the most important bit, preparation of the team, performance of the team, fundamentally the results. My role is to try and make sure that all the support services that sit around Russell are as strong as they possibly can be to give us the best chance of winning. 'When we talk about recruitment, clearly it's going to be a collaborative approach. I've never been in this role ever where I've signed a player for the first team that hasn't been supported by the head coach or the manager. So we'll talk a lot about how we want to play. 'We'll talk a lot about what profiles we think we need and what positions we think we need. And then between Russell and I and the recruitment team, we'll sit down and identify players that we think can make us better very quickly. And then between us, we'll decide about what we do next from that point of perspective. 'That's generally how I've worked and generally how we've discussed how it's going to work. And for me, that's probably been a good way of working so that we've got some clarity. But then also, it's understood it's a collaborative approach where we work together to get the best outcome.' (Image: Colin Mearns) Martin's surprise appointment has not been well received by many Rangers fans – but Thelwell revealed the former Norwich City defender had impressed him and his new colleagues greatly and described the new man in charge as 'the perfect fit'. 'Through a very stringent and very thorough process, it was clear right from the very start to all of us that Russell was the outstanding candidate and we're absolutely delighted that he's decided to join us,' he said. 'He's had a strong career now, over 250 games, both as a manager and as a head coach. We can all see over the course of that journey, he's sharpened his approach, not only from a technical perspective and a tactical perspective, but also from a personal perspective. 'I'm very excited to see what he's going to bring to Rangers Football Club and the team and very much looking forward to working with him going forward.' Read more: Thelwell continued, 'We wanted to use the time well and make sure we made as strong of a decision as we possibly could do. I think it was the right decision to do that. We appreciate there's now pre-season on the horizon and also European games coming thick and fast. 'But we think that by using that time we got exactly the right candidate that's the perfect fit for Rangers Football Club. From my perspective, I've seen Russell's team play for many years. 'In particular, if I look back at that Championship season with Southampton and also the Premier League season, there's a lot to be proud of there and there's a lot that fits Rangers Football Club going forwards.' Asked how he expects Rangers to play under Martin, he said, 'Russell's explained quite clearly what we think Rangers Football Club needs to be. We need to be dominating in all moments, all of those key moments of the game. When we've got it, when we haven't got it and then the transition bits in between. 'I'm delighted that we were able to have those conversations, delighted that you made it slightly easier for me with the negotiations and also very, very pleased that you're sat next to me now and getting ready to work.'
