My taste in cars is way different now from when I first started driving. I've gone through phases: a truck phase, a Volkswagen phase, and back to the first one in recent years. I still love trucks, to be clear, but nowadays, I just want something that works. I thought that's what I was getting with my second-gen Prius when I bought it last year, but that silly thing hasn't moved for months thanks to various hybrid battery gremlins. I'm looking to replace it with something simpler, and in my search, I stumbled across a 2003 Honda Element that I'm pretty sure I'll be driving home tonight.
Suffice to say, I'm stoked about it. My sister drove an Element back in high school, and I remember it being extremely roomy. There are only four seats, which isn't ideal since we're a family of five, but we can all fit in my wife's Expedition. Plus, the Element's rear seats not only fold flat, but they fold up onto the sides?! How did I not know that?

The seller has supposedly owned this car for the past 16 years, which seems like a good sign. Mileage is pretty high at 268,000 or so, but I'm less concerned by that; I'd be more worried if the car had sat for most of its life. And its maintenance record seems clean, as they mention new struts, ball joints, axle seals, and headlights in the last year. One thing I plan to ask more about is the K24's cylinder head replacement they had done 'recently' after learning it needed a new head gasket. Was that a preventative or a reactive job? Who did the work? Is it a sign of something more?
It also looks super clean in the photos. I don't see a dent or a scuff in the listing's 18 photos, and amazingly, the interior looks just as well-kept. Take a peek at the skylight above the backseats.

It has a few aftermarket upgrades, but nothing too crazy. The stock head unit has been replaced with a larger one that displays a backup camera feed. They added a remote start system, and it comes with two keys. All simple stuff.
I really want this one to be a winner because every vehicle I buy breaks. I've written about this before, back when I had a small fleet of dump trucks that caused me fits every time I started them up. Now, I have a 1996 Ford F-350 and the aforementioned Prius that don't like to move. It's getting old, and having dealt with diesel and hybrid headaches for the past couple of years, it's time to buy something clean and simple. That's what I'm hoping to get with the Element, which will hopefully be a better blend of reliability and niftiness.

In the end, I don't care what 'cool' mods are out there for this car because I want to keep it simple, stupid. (I'm talking to myself there, to be clear.) So what if you can get custom cabinetry to go in the back for camping? And who cares that you can buy a swivel mount so the front seats swing around to create a cool conversation space? OK, those are both super cool, but I'm not touching the engine, suspension, or drivetrain unless strictly for maintenance. I've had enough of that in my life.

Michael MacGillivray had planned for months to replace his gas-powered Ford Bronco with an electric vehicle. As a certified public accountant, he followed congressional debate over President Donald Trump's sprawling spending and tax legislation, which would end $7,500 tax credits for some first-time EV buyers. When Trump signed the legislation into law July 4, MacGillivray knew he needed to act. "I was leaning toward the EV regardless, but the tax credit pushed me over the edge," MacGillivray told The Detroit News while driving his new Tesla Model Y back from a road trip to Toronto. The 25-year-old Ann Arbor resident is among a surge of what analysts call "fence sitters" buying EVs in the final weeks before the tax credit expires Sept. 30. And automakers are taking advantage of the short-term boost to clear inventory in anticipation of at least a temporary drop in interest once the credits end. Hyundai's electrified sales jumped 50% compared to July 2024. Combined sales of electrified Toyota and Lexus models rose 6.7% to 90,426. July was General Motors Co.'s best-ever month for its electrified fleet, according to the company, which said it sold more than 19,000 EVs, a 115% increase from July 2024. "Everybody wants them right now before the tax credits go away," said Walter Tutak, dealer trade inventory manager at Champion-Hargreaves Chevrolet dealership in Royal Oak. Honda Motor Co. reaped a record July in electrified sales, in part because "the impending expiration of EV tax credits led some buyers to pull ahead across the industry," Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of U.S. sales at Honda, said in an email. The automaker's Prologue EV recorded 6,318 sales in July, up 82.7% year over year. "We expect to see this continuing in August and September," Laudermilk said. Automakers are not required to report monthly sales, and Tesla Inc. did not disclose data in response to a Detroit News inquiry. Stellantis NV, which also did not report July sales data, is one of many automakers offering aggressive incentives on both EVs and plug-in hybrids, along with prominent language on its brand sites trying to spur customers into action: "Get your EV incentive while you can!" Jeep says on its website in a promotion for the all-electric Wagoneer S. "Brands are going crazy with incentives, and it's good for consumers," said Lauren Fix, CEO of the consulting firm Automotive Aspects. Auto reviewer Anton Wahlman, a former technology analyst, said the next few weeks will be "an inventory cleaning event." Sam Fiorani, industry analyst at AutoForecast Solutions, said manufacturers will compensate for the loss of the EV tax credit with their own incentives to keep prices stable: "It's unlikely that you'll see the prices drop, but you will see leasing deals or customer rebates." Analysts expect manufacturers to further scale back production of EVs to match limited interest among buyers, especially as Trump works to remove federal emissions requirements that pressured companies to make those models regardless of market demand. Stellantis has already started dialing back production of its electrified offerings, with dealers prevented from ordering several models. "In line with our retail priorities and the plans shared with our dealer network, we are working to ensure our production plan is in line with consumer demand," according to a statement from the company. After the industry more broadly scales down production over the course of several years, "they're only going to sell some of them if they can make money on them," Wahlman said. "So there will be far fewer models and they will be priced much higher," he said. "In the midterm, you're going to see EVs disappearing from the marketplace," Fiorani added. "Currently, they're encouraged by emissions (regulations) and by the federal incentives, but once those two things go away, then there's no real incentive for a manufacturer to add a new model to the lineup in a market that's already crowded with EVs." More: Jeep will bring back Hemi V-8 in more models, brand's CEO says Automakers say they remain committed to EVs in the long run, although many are shifting investments toward hybrids and gas-powered, money-making trucks and SUVs. "Toyota's commitment to vehicle electrification is just one important element of its effort to help the world build a zero-carbon future," Toyota Motor North America spokesperson Derrick Justin Brown said in an email. "Through the current industry shifts, including those around EV tax credits, that commitment remains strong, and there are no current plans to alter our approach." Laudermilk said Honda views electrification as "a marathon, not a sprint." "We remain focused on expanding our electrified lineup, utilizing our flexible manufacturing to produce ICE, hybrid-electric and battery electric models on the same production lines to meet the needs of our customers," Laudermilk said. GM executives have said the company will continue to pursue EV innovations, even as it beefs up its gas-powered fleet with investments at Orion Assembly in Michigan, Tonawanda Propulsion in New York and Toledo Propulsion Systems in Ohio. Ford Motor Co. last year canceled plans to produce a three-row, battery-powered SUV at its Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, planning instead to build gas-powered Super Duty pickups there starting next year. And the Dearborn automaker this month delayed the launch of its next-generation electric van and electric full-size pickup, though it also said it would invest $2 billion to build a midsize electric pickup at Louisville Assembly. Stellantis this summer announced plans to bring back 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engines in Jeep SUVs and Ram light-duty pickups as Trump and a GOP-controlled Congress slashed emission and fuel economy standards that had forced the engine's slow demise in the first place. Despite the more favorable regulatory environment for gas engines, Fiorani said automakers neglect electrification at their peril. "A good manufacturer will see that this is the wave of the future and will invest in it," he said. "A short-term manufacturer will go back to building just ICE vehicles and ignore the future of EV." CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR argued in its latest court filing that Michael Jordan is suing the stock car series to earn a permanent charter that no other teams possess, and that neither 23XI Racing nor Front Row Motorsports has suffered any harm by racing as 'open' entries. NASCAR also indicated in its 34-page response filed late Monday that it has buyers interested in the six charters that have been set aside as a federal judge decides if the two teams can have them back for the remaining 11 races of this season. NASCAR is prepared to immediately begin the process of allocating the charters elsewhere. These latest arguments are part of the ongoing federal antitrust lawsuit filed by 23XI and Front Row against NASCAR in a fight over charters, which are essentially franchise tags. 23XI, owned by retired basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin, and Front Row, owned by entrepreneur Bob Jenkins, were the only two organizations out of 15 not to sign extensions on new charter agreements. All the teams were fighting to have the charters made permanent during more than two years of extension negotiations, but NASCAR refused and its final offer was simply through 2031. 23XI and Front Row won a temporary injunction to be recognized as chartered as the case heads toward a Dec. 1 trial date. The injunction was eventually overturned, appealed by the teams, and U.S. District Judge Kenneth Bell will hear arguments Aug. 28 on the matter. 23XI and Front Row as 'open' teams do not receive the same financial percentages as chartered teams. A rulebook change in July after the chartered status was stripped from the two organizations ensured that the six cars aren't in danger of not qualifying for a race; starting spots are guaranteed to the 36 chartered cars in every 40-car field. 'Mr. Jordan has said he wants to use the litigation to grant him a permanent Charter that no other team has,' NASCAR alleged. 23XI and Front Row have maintained they will continue to race even if they must do so as open teams. NASCAR has argued that when the two organizations did not sign the extensions they lost all rights to charters and the sanctioning body should be free to move them. 'Plaintiffs' theoretical inability to obtain Charters post-trial also does not justify NASCAR from selling or transferring Charters, because Plaintiffs do not have Charters now because of their own strategic choice," NASCAR said in its filing. "Plaintiffs had multiple opportunities to acquire 2025 Charters, and they squandered them.' NASCAR also argued that a court cannot order the private company into a partnership with teams it is not interested in doing business with. Another argument by NASCAR is that 23XI and Front Row have not been harmed by not being chartered because their drivers have not left the team and the rule change protects them from missing races; Tyler Reddick of 23XI has clauses in his contract that he can leave if his car is not chartered. Additionally, NASCAR said it pays teams a higher percentage than even Formula 1 does and that its payout structure to teams proves it is not a monopoly because it was increased first by 28% in the 2016 charter agreement, and then by 62% in the 2025 agreement. 'NASCAR pays Teams more than even Formula 1 as a percentage of profit," NASCAR said. 'Plaintiffs ignore the pay raises the Teams received. Instead, they focus on a text during negotiations for the 2025 Charter that said an internal version of the May 2024 draft contained 'zero wins' for Teams. "Plaintiffs ignore that the actual May 2024 draft proposed to Teams carried forward the biggest win for the Teams — a massive pay increase — that was set out in the December 2023 draft. It also gave Charter holders an opportunity to obtain any improved extension terms NASCAR offered to third parties and increased Teams' ability to receive investor funding, among other benefits.' ___ AP auto racing:
