'28 Years Later' writer Alex Garland says sequel fatigue is real — and that Marvel shares the blame

Business Insider6 hours ago

Alex Garland, the writer of the long-awaited movie " 28 Years Later," told Business Insider that sequels have become less profitable — and he thinks Marvel is partly to blame.
The entertainment industry is trying to balance banking on the popularity of sequels, prequels, and reboots with taking risks to commission new stories.
In an interview before "28 Days Later" arrives in theaters on Friday, BI asked Alex Garland and the film's director, Danny Boyle, if it's harder to get original movies made nowadays. Boyle and Garland co-created 2002's "28 Days Later," which was an original idea at the time.
"Obviously, studios are profit machines, they are driven by that," Boyle said. "And so they're alert to what works, and so they tend to lean on sequels if they can, because it gives them a measure of security."
However, Garland added, "I think sequels are seen as diminishing returns."
"I don't wanna sort of throw shade as it were, but Marvel has something to do with this," he said. "It's not a criticism of Marvel, I just think people got oversaturated."
While sequels of films, including 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean," 2001's "Fast and Furious," and 2001's "Harry Potter," raked in hundreds of millions of dollars more than the originals, they're not the reliable hits they once were.
Despite earning $379 million and critical acclaim, Marvel's " Thunderbolts," the 36th sequel of the franchise, made $371 million. This was considered a flop against its $180 million shooting budget and $100 million marketing budget, per Variety.
Similarly, the underperforming DC sequel "Shazam: Fury of the Gods" made $134 million against its $125 million budget.
Garland said that "post-Marvel," he believes it has become easier to make original films. "That's the way I see it, but I could be wrong," he said.
When he expressed a similar sentiment earlier in the interview, Boyle replied: "Well, I'm not sure a lot of other people would agree with that. I think your original films… I think it's quite tough for people to get original material made."
Garland, who co-directed 2025's " Warfare" and 2024's "Civil War," tied what he sees as a shift in priorities for big studios to the rise of indie studios.
"Studios are more open to odder things," he said. "I think that Neon and A24 and those studios have had an effect on the bigger studios.
"They've slightly broadened their horizons, and some of it is just from some filmmakers forging forwards, like, your guy, Nolan, and ' Oppenheimer,' that just proves a point."
"Barbenheimer," the coincidental simultaneous release of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," was a huge phenomenon in 2023. The former made $1.4 billion at the box office while the latter took $975 million. Ryan Coogler's "Sinners," meanwhile, overperformed in April and earned $361 million.
Boyle said Barbenhiemer and "Sinners" by Ryan Coogler were a "shot in the arm for cinema."

New Rumor Claims Marvel's VISION Series Will Use Human Versions of the MCU's AI Characters — GeekTyrant

Over the last year, we've seen a lot of casting news from Marvel's Vision series, and we've seen a lot of great actors join the series. While we don't have a ton of info on the show's synopsis, a new rumor about the show certainly lines up with the roles that have been cast. Paul Bettany stars in the series as a new version of Vision, White Vision, after he lost the Mind Stone and had his memories restored by the Hex Vision. He will be joined by Emily Hampshire, who will be playing E.D.I.T.H. the sleek, intimidating AI system originally created by Tony Stark; James Spader reprising his iconic role as Ultron; T'Nia Miller as Jocasta (another familiar AI name from Marvel lore); Faran Tahir, who returns as Raza, a character we last saw in Iron Man, as well as Todd Stashwick, and Ruaridh Mollica. Industry scooper Daniel Richtman has proven himself a reliable source for Vision intel, and he's just shared a big update on plans for the WandaVision follow-up (via CBM). He claims that the AI characters will appear in human form for most of Vision to save on VFX costs and to help get the series on Disney+ as soon as early 2026. It's a smart decision on Marvel Studios' part if true, though we do hope to see the likes of Ultron and Jocasta get some memorable moments in their robot forms, too. The solid cast list makes sense for this news, as they are bringing in some great actors to bring these characters to life. I think this series sounds like it's shaping up to be really new and original, and I am really looking forward to seeing how it plays out. I loved WandaVision , and if this is anything like it, I think we are in for an exciting ride. Stay tuned for updates on the project as it moves forward.

New "Armor On. Schedule Packed." Promo Spot for IRONHEART - Will This Be a Hit or Miss for Marvel? — GeekTyrant

Marvel has released a new promo spot for it's upcoming Ironheart series, and it offers a bit of new footage as it takes us though the busy schedule of Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne). I can see the potential for this series with the whole tech and magic element to the story. There's a really cool story to tell with that, the question is… will Ironheart do a great job telling that story!? I hope so, but judging from the reactions I've been seeing on social media, it doesn't seem like fans have a lot of cofidence that this show will deliver the goods. The synopsis reads: 'Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , Marvel Television's Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne)—a young, genius inventor determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago.' 'Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins aka The Hood (Anthony Ramos).' The cast of Ironheart also includes Lyric Ross, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, Manny Montana, Matthew Elam, and Anji White. Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Zoie Nagelhout, Chinaka Hodge, Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler all serve as executive producers on Ironheart , while Chinaka Hodge is the head writer. Episodes are directed by Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes. The first three episodes of Ironheart will all be released together. They will hit Disney+ on June 24, 2025. There are a total of six epsiodes. Do you think Ironheart will be a hit or a miss for Marvel?

I Have Questions About the Official ‘Fantastic Four' Pizza

The food tie-ins with Marvel's next movie offer some very curious choices. Giving the foodie world a spin is Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and here's a preview of the upcoming snack tie-ins at major chain restaurants and snack companies. If you thought that AMC Theaters' Herbie popcorn robot was peak—well, let us introduce you to a four-quadrant pizza inspired by Marvel's First Family being released at Little Caesars. What's so audacious about the flavors of each section is what they say about Marvel's Fantastic Four heroes. Obviously pepperoni and jalapeño is Johnny Storm because of his flame powers, and Italian sausage and bacon gives a rocky texture like Thing. But between pepperoni and cheese, we're seeing that Sue could very well be just plain cheese since there's no visible ingredients (get it, invisible woman) and Reed is pepperoni. I mean the cheese is stretchy but it's all over the pizza, so it sorta works if you stretch your imagination. The perplexing pizza pie conundrum is almost as hilariously bonkers as Fantastic Four blue milk. Yes, blue 'Fantastic Berry' flavored milk. From the makers of the Star Wars 'May the Fourth' branded blue milk, TruMoo is now hawking berry-flavored half gallons for families or the curious childless nerd. Personally, I'm more of a vanilla blue milk fan so not even Pedro Pascal catering calcium could get me to drink this. Each half-gallon features a different member of the Fantastic Four team. And what better to go with milk than cereal? Retro-style cereal boxes are back for a variety of General Mills grocery store aisle faves. These are less interested in having each member of the team correspond with an element of each cereal but we love the throwback art. The cereal boxes are perhaps the tamest of the tie-ins because the other breakfast and snack food offering is a special edition Pop-Tarts release which brings back a retired flavor. Fans of frosted blue raspberry will be happy to see its comeback in special packaging and Marvel comics designs, alongside classic flavors frosted strawberry, frosted brown sugar cinnamon, and frosted s'mores. Watch this ridiculous ad, which takes the wild Pop-Tart mascots and turns them into substitute superheroes 'The FanTASTEic Four' who are no help at all when Galactus is coming and you're in need of a frosted bite. Adding on to the fantastically weird are the Snapple Fantastic Four flavor releases. Included in the lineup are Mister Fantastic on the apple flavor (because a Pedro Pascal a day would keep the doctor away); the Thing's kiwi-strawberry juice; and the Storm siblings' peach tea juices. We'll leave you with a look at the Sue Storm bottle design: Do any of the tie-ins entice you? Let us know in the comments.
