War 2 And The Women Of YRF Spyverse: Why Katrina Kaif Remains The OG Action Heroine

New Delhi:
War 2, led by Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani, arrived in theatres today, August 14, 2025. The film, directed by Ayan Mukerji, is the sixth installment in the YRF Spy Universe and the sequel to Hrithik's 2019 hit War. Besides the male leads, Kiara Advani will also be packing some punches in the movie.
Apart from War 2, fans are looking forward to Alia Bhatt and Sharvari's Alpha. The film, is the seventh segment in the Spyverse, and will showcase the leading ladies putting on their action gear.
But while YRF's Spy Universe is hogging the limelight, a certain section of the masses is comparing the franchise's female leads to Katrina Kaif. Recently, a user posted a video on X highlighting how Katrina's character Zoya in the Ek Tha Tiger franchise was 'one of the best representations of a female lead in an action film".
Sharing a snippet of a fight sequence from Tiger Zinda Hai featuring Katrina Kaif, the user wrote, 'While other spy universe films used the female lead as an object for male gaze, the Tiger franchise presents Zoya as a fierce agent, one of the best representations of a female lead in an action film on par with Mardaani's Shivani Roy.'
The post also referred to Rani Mukerji's portrayal of Shivani Shivaji Roy, a senior police inspector in the crime-action, cop drama Mardaani (2014), followed by its sequels Mardaani 2 (2019) and the upcoming Mardaani 3.

'I feel Zoya is a character that's boosted Katrina just like her character in Zero did too!! Also, her reserved personality in Ek Tha Tiger 2, the mother and spy in the other 2. She truly did justice to it!' noted another.

'Zoya was the fearless spy agent from these films, who no other actress we have had so far can replace. The presentation and well-choreographed stunts and action deserve praise,' praised an individual.

War 2 box office collection day 4: Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR thriller dips further, overtakes Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par with Rs 218 cr earning worldwide

War 2 box office collection day 4: Ayan Mukerji's spy thriller, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, saw a disappointing dip on its first Sunday in India. The film, which earned Rs 33.25 crore across the three languages (the original Hindi version and the dubbed Telugu and Tamil versions), saw a further dip on Sunday when it garnered only Rs 31 crore across all languages. After opening at the domestic box office on Thursday at Rs 52 crore, War 2 witnessed a spike on Friday, thanks to the occasion of Independence Day, adding another Rs 57.35 crore. But the major drops on Saturday and Sunday indicate that its first Monday may see a massive downfall in turn. In its extended opening weekend of four days, the film has earned Rs 173.60 crore in India across all languages, as per Sacnilk. Out of this, the major chunk comes from the Hindi version, which earned Rs 29 crore, Rs 44.50 crore, and Rs 26 crore on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, respectively. The Telugu dubbed version follows next, thanks to the presence of Jr NTR as a new entrant in the sequel. That version garnered Rs 22.75 crore, Rs 12.50 crore, and Rs 6.95 crore on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday respectively. The Tamil version lags far behind, collecting only Rs 0.25 crore, Rs 0.35 crore, and Rs 0.30 crore on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday respectively. The language-vise breakup of the Sunday earnings hasn't been ascertained yet. War 2 may have crossed the Rs 150 crore mark at the domestic box office, also beating the lifetime Indian box office earnings of RS Prasanna's coming-of-age sports comedy Sitaare Zameen Par. The Aamir Khan film collected Rs 166.58 crore before its premiere on a pay-per-view basis on YouTube earlier this month. The next milestones of War 2 are to beat the lifetime domestic box office earnings of other hits of this year, including Ashwin Kumar's mythological animated film Mahavatar Narshimha (Rs 201.79 crore), Akshay Kumar's whodunit comedy Housefull 5 (Rs 198.41 crore), and Ajay Devgn's crime thriller Raid 2 (Rs 179.30 crore). Given its current trajectory, War 2 may not even come close to the lifetime domestic box office collection of this year's biggest hits — Vicky Kaushal-starrer historical action film Chhaava (Rs 615.39 crore) and Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda-starrer romantic drama Saiyaara (Rs 331.52 crore), which is also backed by Aditya Chopra's production house Yash Raj Films. War 2 will soon also surpass the lifetime domestic box office collection of Mukerji's 2013 romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (Rs 188.57 crore), but it's quite behind that of his previous directorial, the 2022 romantic fantasy Brahmastra – Part One: Shiva (Rs 267.20 crore). It's also way behind that of the first part, Siddharth Anand's War (2019), which collected Rs 318.01 crore across all three languages. War 2 is the latest instalment in the YRF Spy Universe. It also stars Kiara Advani, Ashutosh Rana, and Anil Kapoor among others. The next instalment, Shiv Rawail's Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, is slated to release in cinemas this Christmas on December 25.

War 2 Box Office Day 4: Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR Film Drops To Rs 31 Crore, Lowest Since Release

Last Updated: War 2 box office day 4: Hrithik Roshan–Jr NTR starrer drops to Rs 31 crore on Sunday, marking a 40% fall from its opening day. War 2 released on August 14. War 2 Box Office Collection Day 4: War 2 had a thunderous start at the box office, but its momentum slowed sharply by the end of its first weekend. The Hrithik Roshan–Jr NTR action thriller, part of the YRF Spy Universe, hit a big dip on Sunday, collecting an estimated Rs 31 crore (India net), its lowest figure since release on August 14. War 2 Opening weekend numbers The sequel opened strong at Rs 52.5 crore on day one and peaked further on Friday at Rs 57.35 crore. However, Saturday's numbers slipped to Rs 33.25 crore, followed by a steeper fall on Sunday. In comparison, Siddharth Anand's 2019 War had brought in ₹37.5 crore on its first Sunday – higher than the sequel despite releasing mid-week. War 2 Occupancy and regional splits On day four, War 2 recorded 27.85% occupancy for its Hindi 2D version. Tamil shows stood stronger at 42.96%, while Telugu screenings registered 30.12%. By Saturday, the film had already crossed Rs 215 crore worldwide, including ₹142.6 crore net from India. The Hindi version contributed Rs 99.5 crore, while Tamil and Telugu earned Rs 90 lakh and Rs 42.2 crore respectively. Overseas collections added around ₹45 crore. War 2 Reviews And Rating The action entertainer, directed by Ayan Mukerji, is mounted on a reported Rs 300–400 crore budget with Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani leading the cast. But despite its scale, reviews have been largely unfavourable. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh rated the film just 1.5 stars, writing, 'Weakest film in #YRFSpyUniverse… Has star power, scale, style, stunts – but lacks soul… Writing is the biggest culprit here… Not even #HrithikRoshan and #NTR can save this royal mess." Can War 2 catch up? War (2019) remains Hrithik Roshan's highest grosser with Rs 319 crore lifetime earnings. With War 2 already crossing the Rs 200 crore mark globally, the big question is whether it can recover from its early dip and get close to that benchmark. Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR's War 2 News18 Review News18 Showsha rated War 2 with a 2.5/5 stars. An excerpt from our review read: 'At 2 hours 50 minutes, War 2 tries to go full throttle but often skids into chaos. A thriller of this scale definitely needed crisper editing. Instead, what we get is a bunch of long-drawn flashbacks that dilute the pace, stripping the film of any solid edge-of-the-seat, nail-biting moment. But what needs to be truly spoken about are its action sequences. One thing is clear – Kabir and Vikram/Rahu are immortal. Nothing can kill them. Bullets, swords, fire, icicles, nothing. Most importantly, they can fly. They fly over land and water." First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Coolie Box Office Collection Day 4: Rajinikanth Film Continues To Dip, But Inches Towards Rs 200 Cr

Last Updated: Coolie Box Office Collection: Despite a dip in the figures, Coolie has maintained strong ticket sales and has stayed ahead of War 2. Coolie Box Office Collection: Rajinikanth's Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, opened to a record-breaking reception at the box office on August 14. With massive bookings ahead of release, the film grossed around Rs 150 crore worldwide on its first day, making it the highest-opening Tamil film ever. On its first Sunday, the film minted Rs 35 crore. As per the report published by Sacnilk, Coolie earned Rs 35 crore in India (net) on its fourth day for all languages. This brings the film's total domestic total to Rs 194.25 crore. This film is slowly inching towards the Rs 200 crore mark and will likely hit it today. Coolie had an overall 63.75% Tamil occupancy on Sunday, August 17, 2025. Theatres in Chennai, Trichy, Dindigul and Coimbatore saw the most footfall. It had an overall 41.98% Hindi occupancy on Sunday, with Hyderabad, Bangalore and Lucknow leading the charge. As for Telugu, Coolie had an overall 49.53% occupancy. Rajinikanth's fans in Chennai and Hyderabad rushed to theatres in large numbers. Coolie Worldwide Box Office Collection Despite a dip in the figures, Coolie has maintained strong ticket sales. Overseas, the film earned over $12 million in the first two days and crossed $15 million by the third day. Overall, Coolie's worldwide gross has crossed Rs 320 crore, setting a new milestone for Tamil cinema in 2025. Analysts predict the film could reach Rs 600 crore worldwide, challenging Rajinikanth's own records with 2.0 and Jailer. Only three Tamil films have ever crossed this mark, with Rajinikanth leading with two and Vijay's Leo in the third. The film's phenomenal box office performance comes despite mixed reviews from critics, proving Rajinikanth's stardom. Coolie also arrives at a significant milestone in Rajinikanth's career, celebrating 50 years of his unmatched stardom. Coolie is also facing intense competition from Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's War 2, but has managed to stay ahead of the film since they were released. However, in order to enter the Rs 600 crore club, the film needs to hold its own in its second and third weeks. Coolie Review The climax, which includes Aamir Khan's cameo and several unexpected twists, has become a major talking point. News18 Showsha's review praised the spectacle, stating, 'The climax is packed not just with action, but the famous cameo appearance by Aamir Khan. The plot twists don't end there. Wait till you watch the tail-end scene to be taken back in time. Overall, Lokesh Kanagaraj has managed to bring a banger to the theatres that need to be enjoyed on the big screen with a hall filled with Rajini fans." News18 Showsha gave the film 4/5 stars.
