Satellite photos show destroyed bombers at Russian air base that Ukraine said it hit
Satellite photos analysed by The Associated Press on Wednesday show seven destroyed bombers on the tarmac at a Russian air base in eastern Siberia, one of the targets Ukraine said it struck with drones in one of the most daring covert operations of the war.
The photos provided by Planet Labs PBC show aircraft wreckage and scorched areas at the Belaya Air Base, a major installation for Russia's long-range bomber force. In the images, at least three Tu-95 bombers and four Tu-22Ms appear to be destroyed.
The planes were parked on an apron beside a runway surrounded by grassland. Other aircraft at the base appear unscathed. Ukraine said that 41 Russian warplanes, including strategic bombers and other types of combat aircraft, were destroyed or damaged in Sunday's operation, which officials said was planned over 18 months. The attack delivered a heavy blow to Russia's air force and its military prestige.
The Russian Defence Ministry said the attack set several warplanes ablaze at air bases in the Irkutsk region and the Murmansk region in the north, but the fires were extinguished. It also said Ukraine also tried to strike two air bases in western Russia, as well as another one in the Amur region of Russia's Far East, but those attacks were repelled. Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn't commented on the issue. The Tu-95 is a four-engine turboprop plane that can fly intercontinental missions and was designed in the 1950s to rival the US B-52 bomber. The Tupolev Tu-22M is a sweep-wing twin-engine supersonic bomber. Russia has used the heavy planes in the all-out war, which began in February 2022 to launch waves of cruise missile strikes across Ukraine.
For decades, long-range bombers have been part of the Soviet and Russian nuclear triad that also includes land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles and atomic-powered submarines carrying ICBMs. The strategic bombers have flown regular patrols around the globe showcasing Moscow's nuclear might.

New Delhi: External affairs minister S Jaishankar and Russia's first deputy prime minister Denis Manturov on Wednesday co-chaired the 26th session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) with the aim of boosting trade, investment, and energy partnership including LNG exports by Russia and the rupee-rouble mechanism. The issue of US tariffs and its fallout on India, and global trade dynamics are also understood to have been discussed. Talks are ongoing for expansion of the Rupee-Ruble mechanism . Russia sees potential to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India, news agency RIA quoted Manturov as saying. US Sanctions More ICC Judges, Citing Tribunal's Actions Against Israel
The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on four more International Criminal Court judges or prosecutors, including those from allies France and Canada, in a new effort to hobble the tribunal, particularly over actions against Israel. "The Court is a national security threat that has been an instrument for lawfare against the United States and our close ally Israel," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement, using a term popular with President Donald Trump's supporters. Rubio said that the four people targeted by the tribunal based in The Hague had sought to investigate or prosecute nationals from the United States or Israel "without the consent of either nation." The four include Judge Nicolas Guillou of France, who is presiding over a case in which an arrest warrant was issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The case was brought forward by the State of Palestine, which is not recognised by Washington but, unlike Israel or the United States, has acceded to the statute that set up the tribunal in The Hague. Guillou, a veteran jurist, had worked for several years in the United States assisting the Justice Department with judicial cooperation during Barack Obama's presidency. Also targeted in the latest US sanctions was a Canadian judge, Kimberly Prost, who was involved in a case that authorised an investigation into alleged crimes committed during the war in Afghanistan, including by US forces. Under the sanctions, the United States will bar entry of the ICC judges to the United States and block any property they have in the world's largest economy -- measures more often taken against US adversaries than individuals from close allies. Rubio also slapped sanctions on two deputy prosecutors -- Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal. The State Department said the two were punished by the United States for supporting "illegitimate ICC actions against Israel," including by supporting the arrest warrants against Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant. The Trump administration has roundly rejected the authority of the court, which is backed by almost all European democracies and was set up as a court of last resort when national systems do not allow for justice. Trump on Friday welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin to Alaska even though Putin faces an ICC arrest warrant, a factor that has stopped him from travelling more widely since he ordered the invasion of Ukraine. Rubio slapped sanctions on four other ICC judges in June.
