Amanah urges for emergency parliamentary sitting to be called over Middle East conflict
Amanah vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar expressed deep concern over the situation, noting that the strikes have resulted in the loss of lives and the destruction of public infrastructure in Iran, while also posing a risk of a wider regional conflict that could threaten global stability, including in Southeast Asia.
"This is a serious development that warrants immediate attention. Parliament must not remain silent on matters involving universal justice, national sovereignty, and humanitarian concerns," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 22).
Mahfuz urged the Dewan Rakyat to convene a special sitting to deliberate on three key issues: Malaysia's official stance and diplomatic response to the conflict; the potential geopolitical and economic impacts on the country, including supply chains, oil prices, and regional security; and possible humanitarian assistance that Malaysia could extend to Iranian civilians affected by the violence.
"As the country's highest democratic institution, Parliament must be the platform through which the voice of the Malaysian people is conveyed in a lawful and dignified manner," he said.
Mahfuz stressed that Malaysia must reaffirm its position as a principled, neutral nation that consistently rejects all forms of occupation, aggression, and violations of international law.
"Malaysia has a responsibility to continue playing an active role in promoting global peace through our involvement in the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and Asean," he said.
He added that Malaysians overwhelmingly oppose violence and support peaceful solutions, and as such, the government has both a moral and political obligation to speak clearly and with dignity on the international stage.
"I call on the Prime Minister to urgently consider the need for a special parliamentary sitting in defence of the values of justice and universal humanity," he said.

RM8.4mil to provide Jalur Gemilang badges for 5mil students

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A total of RM8.4 million was allocated to procure Jalur Gemilang badges for 5.14 million students, including those in schools, matriculation colleges, Form Six colleges, and teacher training institutions. In a written parliamentary reply, education minister Fadhlina Sidek said the funds were disbursed to state education departments and educational institutions in February based on student enrolment numbers. A total of 91 suppliers were involved in supplying the badges, with each student receiving two Jalur Gemilang badges free of charge. Fadhlina said the procurement process was managed by the state education departments, district education offices, and institutions through the ePerolehan system, either by tender or quotation, depending on the amount of allocation received. She said the state education departments were also granted the flexibility to procure the badges by zones to expedite the supply process and to encourage participation from a larger pool of qualified suppliers. Fadhlina said parents are allowed to provide additional badges of the same size and suitable material if desired. 'Wearing the Jalur Gemilang badge on students' uniforms is one of the ministry's initiatives to instil patriotism and love for the country among students from an early age,' she said. She was responding to a question by Latiff Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) about the total cost incurred by the government in supplying Jalur Gemilang badges to all students under the ministry's institutions and which company supplied them. Public school students started wearing the Jalur Gemilang badge on their school uniforms in March. However, the education ministry said no disciplinary action will be taken against those who fail to do so.

MACC probe into trio over citizenship applications ongoing, says Azalina
MACC previously said the arrests in May were linked to Op Outlander, involving a syndicate allegedly registering non-citizen births as Malaysians using fake supporting documents. PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is still investigating the case in which it arrested two home ministry officials and a member of the public in May over alleged corruption in expediting citizenship applications. Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said MACC cannot divulge any details on the investigation so far. 'According to MACC, the case is still under investigation. As such, MACC is legally bound by subsection 29(4) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 not to disclose any of the investigation's details,' she said in a parliamentary reply. Azalina was responding to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who asked the prime minister if there had been any developments on the arrests on May 8. MACC had said the trio were arrested in an operation in Putrajaya after it received information related to the case. It said the arrests were linked to Op Outlander, which saw the arrest of a civil servant believed to have been the mastermind of a syndicate allegedly registering non-citizen births as Malaysian citizens using fake supporting documents. Azalina also said MACC cannot answer as to the status of its investigation into the late Daim Zainuddin and former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, as one of the cases relates to a matter that is sub judice, or under judicial consideration. 'The question is in violation of 23(1)(g) of the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders, and thus should not be answered,' she said. Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) had asked the prime minister to state the status of MACC's investigation into Daim and Ismail, including whether the investigation involves their family members and the total value of the assets involved. In June, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the agency had finished its probe into the corruption and money laundering allegations linked to Ismail. He said the investigation paper had been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor's office for further action, and a decision on whether to press charges may be made 'within a month'. Ismail, the Bera MP, had been called in by MACC for multiple rounds of questioning since February. MACC is investigating the discovery of about RM170 million in cash and 16kg of gold bars worth millions of ringgit, seized in raids on the residences of four men and three other premises believed to be 'safe houses'. It was also reported in May that MACC had opened eight new investigation papers into 'high-value' assets linked to Daim and his family members after receiving new information from overseas. MACC said in July that the value of the overseas assets, found in more than 10 countries including the US, the UK, Switzerland, Singapore, Italy, Japan, Indonesia and several African countries, are estimated to exceed RM3 billion.

Proton Holdings Bhd's electric vehicle manufacturing has drawn interest from Bangladesh which is seeking to secure investment from the Malaysian national carmaker. Attracting investment by Malaysian companies across various sectors figures prominently on the agenda of Bangladesh interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus during his three-day Malaysia visit, which starts today. 'They produce a lot of cars. During the visit, Bangladesh will invite Proton Holdings to invest here,' Yunus's press secretary Shafiqul Alam said at a media briefing in Dhaka yesterday, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. He was referring to the Malaysian automaker's electric vehicle (EV) push in his remarks. The company launched its first-ever electric vehicle, the Proton 7, in December 2024, and is holding a tour of key Malaysian cities between August and October to preview the Proton 5, the second car in the EV will also explore Malaysia's involvement in deep-sea fishing. 'We catch Hilsa and other marine fish within 40 to 50 kilometres of the deep sea. However, our maritime boundary is about 210,000 square kilometres,' Shafiqul Alam said. Yunus, whose trip is being undertaken at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is accompanied by foreign affairs adviser Mohammad Touhid Hossain, expatriate welfare and overseas employment adviser Asif Nazrul and power, energy and mineral resources adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan.
