Carnival Cruise Line President addresses loyalty program concerns
For passengers sailing on board Carnival Vista's July 12 Caribbean cruise, the chance to be the first to visit Celebration Key, Carnival Cruise Line's new exclusive destination in The Bahamas, wasn't the only perk of the special voyage.
Carnival's beloved brand ambassador, John Heald, sailed on the cruise to participate in special events and show guests around Celebration Key when they arrived at the new port on July 19.
Carnival President Christine Duffy also cruised with them, and on July 14, she joined Heald for a Q&A session in the ship's theater hosted by the cruise line's senior vice president of guest operations, Sarah Beth Reno.Not only did the onboard discussion cover Celebration Key, it gave passengers who attended a chance to hear direct from Duffy about the rationale behind the cruise line's controversial loyalty program overhaul.
The new Carnival Rewards loyalty program, which launches in June 2026, wasn't well received by loyal Carnival cruise passengers when it was announced in June. Many worry that the new program, which is based on spending and eliminates lifetime status, won't reward them for their loyalty as well as the current VIFP Club loyalty program that's based solely on days sailed.
During the discussion, Duffy explained that she and her team knew the loyalty program change and its announcement would be difficult. But it was necessary.
Her explanation about why the change had to happen, and answers to some of the most-asked questions about the new program, were captured in video recorded during the Q&A session, which was shared on John Heald's Facebook page on July 16, but later appeared to be deleted.

Sarah Beth Reno: We recently announced our new loyalty program. It's received a lot of feedback from guests. And John, I know you're getting a lot of feedback from guests.
So, Christine, let's walk us through the rationale of the change, right? Your thoughts on the program and what will be happening now between now and June 2026.
Christine Duffy: Well, that's right. The program doesn't start until June 1 of 2026. And yes, we decided to announce a year in advance so that we really would have the time for everybody to know what change was coming, how it's going to work.
Maybe it wasn't a good idea to announce it 12 months early, but we did because again, we want to be transparent and we want to really make sure that people understand the program.
Why did Carnival Cruise Line overhaul its loyalty program?
Now, why did we do this? Let me say Carnival was founded in 1972. And between 1972 and 2012, when the VIFP program was started, we sailed 40 million guests. Between 2012 and 2025, we've sailed 65 million guests.
So as you can imagine, today we have 29 ships. We will sail close to have sailed in our history, probably about 105, 110 million people by the end of this year. And when we looked at the ships that we have coming, and you all know we've got two more Excel ships coming. We've got three ACE ships coming. It's just not sustainable.
And so, while we recognize and we knew this change and this announcement was going to be difficult, the lifetime status benefits just can't be delivered in the right way.
So, a couple of things that we can talk about today that first of all, there are a lot of details that will be announced as we get towards the end of the year. We are — there is — a lot of work that has to be done.
Loyalty programs are highly regulated, right, because the loyalty program does have a credit card that comes along with it.Carnival credit card points will transfer to new Carnival Rewards credit card
Now that credit card — the new card for the new Carnival Rewards program — for people that have today the Barclays Carnival card, any points, fun points that you have today or that you have on May 30, will also transfer automatically to the new card.
So, I know one of the questions people have asked you, John, was whether they should get the card now.
You can't get the new card now, but you can still get the card. If you don't have it, continue using the card that you do have because all of the points will transfer over to the new card.
Sarah Beth Reno: And you'll start getting those benefits, if you apply now, you'll start getting the new benefits right away starting in June of 2026.Christine Duffy: You'll get the points. So, status will be something that is different and, you know, we also, we're very sensitive to — especially for Diamond Guest and the hurdle and milestone that it is to become Diamond — that we're giving everybody six years to maintain that status irrespective of what they spend or sail.
Having the credit card, using the credit card for everyday purchases in addition to purchasing Carnival cruises or spending on board does give you points.
And while we're not able yet to communicate point values, we can say that everyday spending will get you points on the card as well as what you purchase for Carnival.

Carnival Rewards credit card will offer bonus points opportunities
And remember, like most credit cards, there's plenty of other ways to get points. When people open up a new card, credit card providers typically pick points. I have a, you know, department store credit card and once or twice a year, I can say that I want double points.
We also know and are already talking with many of our providers, our retail providers, who will be also offering promotions where people will be able to earn extra points. And I think for Carnival we will probably do the same thing on certain cruises. So more to come on that.
I really, more than anything, just want to reassure people: it is not our intention at all to have, you know, for people not to be able to maintain their status if they choose to. But lifetime status is not, is just not feasible given the number of people and the growth that we have in the highest tiers.Kids with Carnival status will have a chance opt in with status at 18
Sarah Beth Reno: Do you want to talk a little bit about the kids?
Christine Duffy: So, one of the questions that we've been asked is what about kids? And I've met kids over the years that are two and three and four years old that are already Platinum or Diamond.
They will not be able to go into the new rewards program because you have to be 18 or over. So, their status will match the status of whoever is paying for the cabin that's in the cabin.
However, we are going to maintain the database of any kids that are Platinum or Diamond that are under 18 on June 1 of 2026. So, when they turn 18, they will have the option to opt in to the program at the status that they were when we provided the benefit to everyone else. So, Diamonds have six years. So, if you count this year, seven years. And Platinum have two years.Carnival plans to offer a separate credit card for Canada and Australia
Sarah Beth Reno: Very good. And do you want to touch a little bit on if you're Australian or Canadian? I don't know if there's any Australians or Canadians in the room, but you never know.
Christine Duffy: I know we have somebody from Canada. I did meet somebody from Canada.
The credit card laws are different. So, we're not able to offer the same card in Canada or Australia as we'll have in the U.S., but we are in active negotiations and discussions with a card provider for Canada and Australia so that we will be able to have our guests from those countries be able to join the new rewards program. The benefits will probably be different because the credit card rules are different in those countries.Carnival Rewards will recognize milestones in a new way, but benefits won't be lost
John Heald: I was talking to some people who are on their 50th cruise and we have a current milestone program where if you cruise 25, 50, 75 or 100 times, you get the equivalent amount of onboard credit. Is that something that we're still going to be doing for the next few years?
Christine Duffy: So, there will be a new milestone program that comes out with the new rewards on June 1. However, for anyone that has already earned a milestone or earns a milestone in this period, you'll be able to redeem that for five years.
So, no one will lose any of the milestone benefit that they've already earned or accumulated before June 1. And there will be a milestone program with the new reward program that will provide recognition and, in that case, it'll be points — which points then can be used for lots of things that today you really can't use points for in our existing program.Carnival Rewards shouldn't overshadow the reasons you cruise
John Heald: And I think it's important that I mention also that along with all of this, it's been wonderful to speak to people who are Diamond and Platinum and Gold and Red and they are all obviously they've given me their opinions and a lot of them are very, you know, telling me exactly what they feel.
But virtually every single one has also said that the reason they cruise, and will continue to cruise, is because of the fun they're having and that they know the crew will continue to take wonderful care of them.
And I think it's important that we all remember that — that whatever card color, whatever it is, the crew will always make sure you have the fun.
And I hope, I really do sincerely hope that the main reason you continue to cruise is the fun, the affordability of the cruise, and most importantly, the crew who are the absolute best in the cruise industry bar none. Thank you.

Denny's tests new digital loyalty program

Denny's Corp. is testing and training employees on a new loyalty program that is expected to launch in the back half of the year, company executives said Monday. The Spartanburg, S.C.-based company, which also owns the Keke's Daytime Cafe brand, said the program will use the brand's existing database. 'This new program is a best-in-class, one-to-one marketing program that leverages our already strong database of loyal guests to create greater, more compelling reasons for them to engage and spend more,' Kelli Valade said during a second-quarter earnings call. 'It will allow us to collect valuable first-party data that enables us to personalize offers based on real guest behavior, drive frequency and margin with right promotions, and deliver the right message to the right guests at the right time.' Valade said Denny's 5.5 million digital guests are valuable, as they visit restaurants more often than average customers. 'On average, these guests visit two times more often than other guests,' she said. 'Plus, we're making it easy for everyone to join from anywhere they can access which includes, but isn't limited to just the Denny's app. By launching this new points-based loyalty program, we incentivize engagement every visit, collecting data needed to fuel a personalized CRM [customer relationship management] program to build frequency and delivering between 50 to 100 basis points in traffic over time.' The economy continues to be 'choppy,' she added. 'Household incomes remain under pressure and consumer sentiment continues to be volatile, meaning consumers are pulling back on spending across most categories, and they're being more selective about where to spend,' Valade said. The company has seen improved traffic among customers in the $50,000 to $70,000 household income range. Valade said Denny's top four designated market areas are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and Phoenix, which represent nearly 30% of the brand's same-store sales base. 'In Q2, these markets experienced outsized macroeconomic pressures that contributed to a reduction in systemwide same-restaurant sales of approximately 30 basis points,' she said. 'This was a shift felt across the industry, and we were not unique, but our concentration in these markets means we may have felt the impact more acutely.' Valade said Denny's will be able to target customers with special, individualized offers. 'What we're moving to is truly a one-to-one marketing program,' she said, 'And honestly, it will be best-in-class from the team that's worked on this and the expertise we have in this area now. So, we're truly moving to that one-to- one where we'll journeys or lanes where you might get one offer based on your patterns and your purchase history, and I might get a different one.' During June, the Keke's brand launched its first systemwide promotion, featuring $5 kids' meals with an adult entree. 'This timely promotion set out to capture families traveling during the busy summer months and promote the recently added kids' section of the menu,' Valade said. 'This first-ever Keke's promotion drove substantial incremental traffic during the weekdays throughout the summer and helped introduce the brand to new guests.' Denny's continues to invest in virtual brands, expanding its stable of The Burger Den, The Melt Down, and Banda Burrito. Robert Verostek, Denny's chief financial officer, said, 'Beginning late last year, we started testing another virtual brand at our company restaurants in partnership with Franklin Junction, selling Nathan's Famous hot dogs. This rolled out throughout Q1 and is currently in over 70% of our company restaurants.' Verostek added that off-premises sales made up about 21% of total sales during the second quarter. 'Virtual brands have always been highly incremental for us with minimal SKUs [stock keeping units] being added, driving traffic during dayparts where we have capacity, and our operators are loving how easy hot dogs are to execute,' he said. For the second quarter ended June 25, Denny's reported net income of $2.5 million, or five cents a share, compared to $3.6 million, or seven cents a share, in the same period last year. Revenues were $117.7 million, compared to $115.9 million in the same quarter a year ago. Second-quarter same-store sales declined 1.3% at Denny's and increased 4% at Keke's. As of June 25, Denny's had 1,558 restaurants, including 1,474 franchised and licensed restaurants and 84 company-operated stores. Of those, 74 restaurants were Keke's. The Trump administration dismisses most on a federal board overseeing Puerto Rico's finances
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The Trump administration has dismissed five out of seven members on Puerto Rico's federal control board that oversees the U.S. territory's finances, sparking concern about the future of the island's fragile economy. The five fired are all Democrats. A White House official told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the board 'has been run inefficiently and ineffectively by its governing members for far too long and it's time to restore common sense leadership.' Those fired are board chairman Arthur Gonzalez, along with Cameron McKenzie, Betty Rosa, Juan Sabater and Luis Ubiñas. The board's two remaining members — Andrew G. Biggs and John E. Nixon — are Republicans. Sylvette Santiago, a spokesperson for the board, said none of those fired had received notifications ahead of their dismissal. The board was created in 2016 under the Obama administration, a year after Puerto Rico's government declared it was unable to pay its more than $70 billion public debt load and later filed for the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. In remarks to the AP, the White House official claimed the board had operated ineffectively and in secret and said it 'shelled out huge sums to law, consulting and lobbying firms.' The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the subject, also accused the board's staff of receiving 'exorbitant salaries.' The board spokesperson did not return a message seeking additional comment. Puerto Rico is struggling to restructure more than $9 billion in debt held by the state's Electric Power Authority, with officials holding bitter mediations with creditors demanding full payment. It's the only Puerto Rico government debt pending a restructuring, with the White House official accusing the board of preferring to 'extend the bankruptcy.' In February, the board's executive director, Robert Mujica Jr., said it was 'impossible' for Puerto Rico to pay the $8.5 billion that bondholders are demanding. He instead unveiled a new fiscal plan that proposed a $2.6 billion payment for creditors. The plan does not call for any rate increases for an island that has one of the highest power bills in any U.S. jurisdiction as chronic power outages persist, given the grid's weak infrastructure. Alvin Velázquez, a bankruptcy law professor at Indiana University, said he worries the dismissal of the board members could spark another crisis in Puerto Rico. 'This is really about getting a deal out of (the power company) that is not sustainable for the rate payers of Puerto Rico,' he said. Velázquez, former chair for the unsecured creditors committee during the bankruptcy proceedings, also questioned if the dismissals are legal, since board members can only be removed for just cause. 'What's the cause?' he said. 'What you're going to see is another instance in which the Trump administration is taking on and testing the courts.' Carnival Cruise Line rep challenges Celebration Key critics Heald began his post by assuring passengers that the many questions and concerns they raised to him about Celebration Key in the days since its opening are receiving the proper attention. 'And to the many who had some concerns about bees, I promise the island management are aware and are taking care of this accordingly.' Heald also confronted the criticism that's been circulating on social media about Celebration Key. 'There are those on social media who drive me and probably some of you absolutely bonkers. These [TikTokers] and [YouTubers] do not seem to understand this is not an out island, it's a private resort in Grand Bahama. We proudly employ 1500 Bahamians to serve you. Out islands, like Half Moon Cay, operate with ships' food and crew,' he brand ambassador also expressed his frustration with the many cruisers who have complained that Carnival doesn't include unlimited food with a visit to Celebration Key, comparing it other cruise lines' private islands, which typically serve a complimentary barbecue buffet-style lunch that's brought from the ship. Rather than enjoying as much lunch as they want, Carnival passengers visiting Celebration Key get a meal credit to redeem at one of the resort's food trucks and fast-casual dining venues. 'And a few have posted that 'one free meal is not enough.' Ummmmm, OK, but let me ask you this, Mr. and Mrs. Glitterknickers: When do you get meal credits when you go to Cozumel, or Grand Turk, or at any port of call,' Heald defended. Many Carnival cruisers say Celebration Key exceeds expectations Despite what the cruise line's relentless critics have posted, many Carnival passengers who visited Celebration Key during its first days shared rave reviews. The comments on most of the brand ambassador's recent posts about Celebration Key are full of passenger praise for the new Carnival cruise destination. 'We had an amazing day at Celebration Key on its opening day on the Vista! Everything was perfect —chairs, umbrellas, food, swing bar, pool and the workers could not have done more or been nicer,' Linda Sharpe D'Alessandro passengers noted that they were unsure about cruising to the destination thanks to social media critics, but Celebration Key won them over in a big way. 'I'm on the Glory right now. I was a little worried with all the negative Nancys out there, but Celebration Key exceeded my expectation. This is my new favorite place,' Leah MB commented on another Celebration Key post. The warmth of the Bahamian staff at Celebration Key has been a key theme in comments from visitors. The destination's opening invigorated and brought hundreds of jobs to Grand Bahama, an island that was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in 2019. 'It's really good to see this completed. I remember visiting Freeport six years ago and that hurricane just tore up so much of the island. I remember the locals saying how much the damage was. It affected them locally.
