EU Unveils New Guidelines, Age Verification App Prototype To Protect Children Online

Barnama2 days ago
BRUSSELS, July 15 (Bernama-Anadolu) --The European Commission on Monday introduced new guidelines and unveiled a prototype age verification app as part of broader efforts to enhance online safety for minors under the Digital Services Act (DSA), Anadolu Ajansi reported.
The guidelines detail how digital platforms can better shield children from online risks such as addictive design features, cyberbullying, harmful content, and unsolicited contact.
They also clarify when and how age verification should be conducted, particularly for high-risk services like adult content platforms.

In a statement, the EU Commission announced a key element of the initiative: a prototype age verification app developed to uphold user privacy.
The app enables users to prove they are over 18 without revealing personal information such as their date of birth or identity.
The app will initially be piloted in Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain.
Trials will be carried out in cooperation with online platforms, including adult content providers. Depending on the results, the tool could be adapted for other age thresholds or sectors, such as alcohol sales.
This collaborative project represents a significant step in implementing the DSA and fostering a consistent, privacy-conscious approach to age verification across the EU.
"Making sure our children and young people are safe online is of paramount importance to this Commission," said Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy. "Platforms have no excuse to be continuing practices that put children at risk."

BRICS Adds Collective Momentum To Global South Progress

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 4, 2025 (Xinhua) -- This photo taken on July 3, 2025 shows welcome banners for the BRICS Summit on a street in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 17th BRICS Summit will be held here from July 6 to 7. (Photo by Claudia Martini/Xinhua) RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, July 17 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- With its inclusive and cooperative framework tailored to the needs of emerging economies, as a Xinhua-affiliated think tank has argued, BRICS stands apart to add collective momentum to the progress of the Global South, which seeks fairer development opportunities. In a report titled "BRICS Cooperation: Advancing the Collective Progress of the Global South," the Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with Xinhua News Agency, offers a thorough overview of the evolution of BRICS cooperation, systematically highlighting its major accomplishments and contemporary significance. It presents a meaningful path for countries of the Global South to pursue shared prosperity in an increasingly complex international environment, and underscores the strong sense of responsibility and leadership shown by BRICS nations as frontrunners of the Global South. By amplifying the voices of countries long marginalised in global decision-making, BRICS has taken on the role of a stabilising force in an increasingly fractured world. The expansion of BRICS marks a qualitative leap in its representativeness and influence. In January this year, Indonesia, the largest economy in ASEAN, officially joined BRICS. Today, BRICS countries account for over half of the world's population, nearly 30 per cent of global GDP, and more than 50 per cent of global economic growth. This signifies a historic shift of Global South power from the periphery to the centre of the international arena. A greater BRICS, with enhanced appeal, stronger representativeness, and broader geographic reach, is reshaping the global political and economic landscape. The growing diversity of BRICS further underscores its commitment to inclusiveness and its role as a true representative of the Global South. Greater BRICS cooperation has highlighted the development priorities of emerging economies and fostered dialogue on equal footing. It reflects the growing consensus that effective multilateral solutions must involve a broader range of voices, especially those previously excluded from global governance. In practice, BRICS has offered a hopeful and practical development model for developing countries through initiatives focused on infrastructure investment, technology transfer, and financial integration. For Global South members grappling with infrastructure challenges, food insecurity, and climate vulnerabilities, BRICS offers much-needed support which has otherwise been scant. More importantly, BRICS speaks with one collective voice for fairness and justice in global governance. It advocates shared progress, mutual respect and sovereign equality, while firmly opposing exclusive "small blocs."

Nippon Kinzoku Boosts Sales Of Eco-friendly Stainless Steel Finish

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- Tokyo-based Nippon Kinzoku Co Ltd has announced it will ramp up sales of its Long Die Life (L-DieL) finish stainless steel, a surface-treated material designed to reduce die wear during press operations. L-DieL works by softening the passive oxide film on stainless steel—a thin yet ultra-hard layer of chromium oxide that protects against corrosion but causes significant wear on pressing dies. The treatment mitigates this effect, improving productivity and extending tool life. Certified as an 'Eco-Product', Nippon Kinzoku, in a statement said L-DieL supports customers in cutting costs while also aligning with the company's sustainability goals, including achieving net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

Toshiba launches 1800V automotive photorelay for EVs and energy storage

KUALA LUMPUR: Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation has launched the TLX9165T, an automotive photorelay designed for high-voltage battery systems with an output withstand voltage of 1800V. Mass production and shipments of the device, packaged in a 10-pin SO16L-T format, have commenced. The TLX9165T is tailored for battery management systems (BMS) in electric vehicles, where it monitors charge levels and ensures electrical insulation between high-voltage batteries and the vehicle chassis. Toshiba stated, 'It is also applicable to energy storage systems (ESS) used in renewable energy infrastructure, which operate with voltage levels similar to EV battery systems.' With the EV industry transitioning from 400V to 800V battery architectures for faster charging and extended range, photorelays must now withstand at least 1600V. The TLX9165T meets this demand by incorporating a newly developed high-voltage MOSFET. The SO16L-T package features a resin with a Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) of 600 or higher, complying with IEC 60664-1 standards. It provides a creepage distance of 7.5mm or more on the light receiver side, enabling a rated operating voltage of 1500V. Toshiba highlighted that the product maintains the same pin pitch and layout as existing SO16L-T models, simplifying integration into existing circuit designs. Toshiba plans to expand its photorelay lineup for automotive and industrial applications, reinforcing safety and efficiency in high-voltage environments. - Bernama
