‘Alice in Wonderland' author's former home asks $2.17M — where he drew his whimsical inspirations from a neighboring cathedral

New York Post10-07-2025
Take a tumble down the rabbit hole for this property's colorful history.
The former home of 'Alice in Wonderland' author Lewis Carroll — the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson — is on sale for $2.17 million. The North Yorkshire residence was the seasonal home of Carroll's father, a church official at the nearby Ripon Cathedral.
The sale, listed by Savills, was first reported by the BBC. The outlet reported that the Dodgson family spent three months out of the year residing at the home throughout the 1850s. A young Carroll was forced to spend his school vacations from the prestigious Oxford University there.

The Georgian-era abode, called Ripon Old Hall, was constructed in the early 1700s and updated in the mid-1800s. The whimsical interiors of its next door neighbor, Ripon Cathedral, are cited as an early inspiration for Carroll's 1865 children's story, 'Alice in Wonderland.'
The house itself is filled with eye-catching details, including intricate plasterwork and hand-carved millwork.
The first floor encompasses three reception rooms, a modern kitchen, a formal dining room and a study, according to the listing. Two upper floors consist of five bedrooms and three bathrooms.
Period features throughout the home include raised wood paneling, marble floors and stately fireplaces. The home's original oak staircase is decorated with carved foliage garlands, and the one of the upstairs bedrooms features fluted, Greek-style columns within the wall paneling.

Most strikingly, perhaps, is the upper hall ceiling, which depicts in the vivid color the Judgement of Paris, a scene from Greek mythology.
While Ripon Old Hall boasts beautiful architectural details, it's the nearby cathedral where the young author likely drew his inspirations.
Intricate wooden carvings throughout Ripon Cathedral bear clear resemblances to Carroll's fantastical characters, including a golden queen upon a red beam and a wide-eyed headless cat sticking out its tongue. Elsewhere, a mythical gryphon pursues a rabbit down a hole.
'The sale of The Old Hall presents an incredibly rare opportunity to own a slice of history,' said Ed Stoyle, director and at Savills in York, in a statement shared with The Post.

Stoyle added that the 18-century home offers 'a window into the changing architecture of the last 300 years.'

The $2.17 million listing also comes with a separate studio apartment, accessed through a private entrance. The space includes its own kitchen, bedroom and a bathroom.
The property boasts walled gardens, including a 'breakfast garden' position to capture the morning sun, or perhaps host a mad tea party.

Meryl Streep Trades Miranda Priestly's Prada Bag for a Sparkly Status Water Bottle

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Barely a week into filming in New York City, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has given fashion editors plenty of outfits to dissect. As much as I've loved seeing Anne Hathaway slide on Andy Sach's Chanel sandals and Emily Blunt resume her role as the other Emily, I've been most excited for Meryl Streep to step back into Runway editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly's Manolos. That day finally arrived on Wednesday, July 23, but it didn't come with quite the status accessories I expected. In the original 2006 film, Streep introduces us to Priestly with an intimidating stomp into the Runway offices, Gucci sunglasses hiding her eyes and a giant Prada bag slung over her shoulder (logo side out, of course). On the 2025 set, her fashion alter-ego appears to have traded her best designer bags for—wait for it—a rhinestone-covered water bottle by Collina Strada, an NYC-based independent label. The unexpected color combination on display in her costume—lilac top, camel leather skirt—felt appropriate, even if it was a swerve from Priestly's initial fur coats and dark suiting. Editors with Runway-level credentials today are just as likely to mix textures and shades in their work outfits. Her Collina Strada water bottle, however, is what really got the Marie Claire Slack talking. Senior royals and celebrity news editor Kristin Contino likened it to Jennifer Lopez's notorious bling cups; digital director Jenny Hollander said she was both "intrigued and confused" by the accessory choice. This much I can say with authority: When Collina Strada designer Hillary Taymour first released her crystal-coated water bottle in 2019, it was the groundbreaking way to hydrate. Most reusable bottles on the market are pastel or matte and totally plain; hers is practically visible from space. Naturally, it's become a fixture among celebrities and in the fashion week front row—especially in September, when most shows are outdoors and baking hot. For an in-the-know fashion person, this is the preferred way to get their daily water intake as opposed to, say, a Stanley cup. But given Priestly's more refined take on luxury in the first film, an accessory best defined as "blingy" still reads as unexpected. View Deal Like every other look caught in an on-set paparazzi photo, no one knows the full story behind it until the film hits theaters. (See: the uproar over American Love Story's Carolyn Bessette Kennedy costumes that was quickly squashed by the series' creator, or the discourse around Anne Hathaway's first Devil Wears Prada 2 looks.) So, it's too early to say whether a rhinestone water bottle is off-brand for the Miranda Priestly we'll all be reacquainted with when the film hits theaters. Regardless, the accessory has a precedent. As fashion features editor Emma Childs pointed out, the inspiration for Meryl Streep's character (Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour) once attended a Collina Strada show in 2023 where those rhinestone bottles were all over the audience. (It was also staged at a cannabis museum, in case you were wondering.) The costume department is clearly paying close attention to the film's source material.

Chili's fans may soon be new boot goofin'. The Tex-Mex and American restaurant chain has partnered with Tecovas, a Texas-based cowboy boot and Western-style retailer, to release Booth Boots. The deep red cowboy boots, marketed as being made from the same material as Chili's restaurant booths, are available only on the Tecovas website, starting July 29. "The limited-edition Chili's x Tecovas collection pays tribute to two American originals, pairing the design and craft of Tecovas with Chili's iconic red booth, where so many good stories begin," Sam Fodrowski, Tecovas' vice president of brand and product marketing, said in a news release. "It's unexpected, fun and crafted with the same care and attention to detail we bring to everything we do." The Booth Boots are available in men's and women's. The women's boot is based on Tecovas' best-selling Annie design. The 14-inch-tall boot features a forward snip toe and 2-inch heel. The men's boot is based on Tecovas' Garrett design. In addition to the two boots, Tecovas and Chili's are offering a Booth Belt, a handcrafted belt embellished with a chili pepper and brass buckle. Both the men's and women's Booth Boots are $345. The Booth Belt is $75. No, the Booth Boots are not made from old Chili's booths. The boots are though made from red vinyl, the same material used to craft Chili's booths, Jesse Johnson, Chili's vice president of marketing, told USA TODAY. Several Tecovas locations are celebrating the Booth Boot with free Chili's margaritas, exclusive Chili's pepper branding irons and other giveaways. Here's a look at the schedule: TikTok creator Fernanda Castro described the Chili's and Tecovas collaboration as a "Texas version of a royal wedding," as both brands are based in Texas. Notably, the Chili's at 4420 N. Lamar Boulevard in Austin, Texas – which is where Tecovas is based – has garnered widespread attention online for its plethora of positive online reviews. Ahead of the widespread release, several content creators were sent their own pairs of Booth Boots, which have been circulating on social media for a few days. "This reminds me of the time where I'm about to put on my Chili's Booth Boots and go to the booth at Chili's and sit in with my Booth Boots in the booth," content creator Robert Rausch said in a TikTok video.

Paul Gallagher, brother of Oasis' Liam and Noel Gallagher, charged with rape: Reports

Paul Gallagher, the older brother of Oasis musicians Liam and Noel Gallagher, has been charged with rape and multiple instances of physical abuse following a police investigation, according to multiple reports. Gallagher was charged with rape and three counts of sexual assault, London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement, according to The New York Times and BBC. The man also faces three counts of intentional strangulation, two counts of making a threat to kill, assault causing actual bodily harm, and coercive and controlling behavior. Authorities said the charges stem from a 2024 investigation into alleged offenses the occurred between 2022 and 2024, according to the Times and BBC's reporting. An unnamed woman, who is reportedly involved in the case, is receiving support from specially trained officers. USA TODAY has reached out to the Metropolitan Police for comment. Gallagher is expected to make an appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Aug. 27, per the outlets. He denies all accusations against him, Gallagher's law firm Carson Kaye Solicitors said in a July 28 statement. "Paul Gallagher has been charged with a number of offences all relating to a single complainant," the statement read. "Mr. Gallagher has consistently engaged with the police throughout their investigation and always strongly denied the allegations made against him. He looks forward to clearing his name, but as there are now ongoing legal proceedings, our client is unable to comment further." Gallagher's legal troubles come as his famous brothers have been back on the road for Oasis' long-awaited reunion tour, which kicked off July 4 at Cardiff Principality Stadium in Wales. The superstars are scheduled to bring the tour to North American fans on Aug. 24 with a show in Toronto, followed by performances in Chicago; East Rutherford, New Jersey and Pasadena, California. USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Liam and Noel Gallagher for comment. While Gallagher has kept a lower profile compared to his rock 'n' roll siblings, he has made several TV and film appearances in support of his brothers' musical careers, including the 2016 documentary "Oasis: Supersonic" and the 2019 film "Liam Gallagher: As It Was." Gallagher also coauthored a 1998 biography, "Brothers: From Childhood to Oasis: The Real Story," which discussed Liam and Noel's early life and rise to fame.
