Qatar's 2036 Olympic bid underscores its leading position in global sports: PM
The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister noted that, should Qatar be granted the honour of hosting this global event, it would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic Games -- a testament to its readiness, advanced organizational capabilities, and wealth of operational and technical expertise.
He added that the bid builds on Qatar's proven track record of successfully hosting major international sporting events, most notably the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which received global acclaim as the best edition in the tournament's history.
Qatar, the PM noted, has consistently demonstrated its ability to deliver fully integrated event models and create safe, welcoming environments for fans from around the world. These achievements have been bolstered by the country's renowned hospitality and strong community engagement -- both of which reflect the core values of Qatari and Arab culture and greatly enriched the experience of past tournaments.
He stressed that Qatar's bid goes beyond operational planning, embodying a comprehensive vision that positions sport as a universal language, a catalyst for sustainable development, and a bridge between cultures. This vision aligns with Qatar's enduring commitment to the principle of 'Sport for Peace,' a foundational element of its national development agenda.
In this context, the Prime Minister highlighted Qatar's advanced security capabilities supported by cutting-edge technology, as well as the country's pioneering role in securing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 -- experience now being shared to support the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that with its world-class sports facilities, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and distinguished event management experience, Qatar is presenting a strong, integrated bid rooted in readiness, trust, and a history of successful execution. The bid reaffirms the nation's commitment to delivering an inspiring 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games that provide a global platform for celebrating diversity and cultural exchange.
The bid is also a reflection of the ambitions outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to build a modern society that balances economic, social, and environmental development, with human development at its core. World Athletics introduces gene test for female category competitions
DPA Berlin World Athletics are introducing a gene test for athletes wishing to compete in the female category, the body said in a statement on Wednesday. The rule comes into force on September 1 and applies to all world ranking competitions, including the world championships in Tokyo, which start on September 13. All athletes wishing to compete in the female category will be required to undergo a once-in-a-lifetime test for the SRY gene, 'a reliable proxy for determining biological sex,' World Athletics said. 'This is to be conducted via a cheek swab or blood test, whichever is more convenient,' it added. World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said: 'The philosophy that we hold dear in World Athletics is the protection and the promotion of the integrity of women's sport. 'We are saying, at elite level, for you to compete in the female category, you have to be biologically female. It was always very clear to me and the World Athletics Council that gender cannot trump biology.' The gender eligibility debate gained a lot of attention after last summer's Olympic Games in Paris. Algeria's Imane Khelif and Taiwan boxer Lin Yu-ting won gold medals at the Games after being allowed to compete by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, a year before, they were disqualified from the world championships, which is run by the International Boxing Federation (IBA), after allegedly failing eligibility tests. The IOC, which has run the last two Olympic boxing tournaments because it has suspended IBA for various reasons, has said Khelif and Lin can compete because they born and identify as women.

The envoy was speaking at a reception to mark the 98th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).Present on the occasion were Brigadier-General Abdulbaqi S. Al Ansari, representing Qatar Emiri Naval Commander; Brigadier-General Fahad Al Marri, representing Commander of the Qatar Amiri Signal Corps; diplomats; members of the media and guests. The Chinese ambassador emphasised the significance of ongoing defence cooperation between China and Qatar, describing it as a vital component in enhancing bilateral ties and contributing to global and regional underscored China's peaceful rise, commitment to sovereignty, and opposition to hegemonism and power politics. Reflecting on history, he drew attention to China's central role in the Eastern Front during World War II and the heavy sacrifices made by the Chinese people during the war against Japanese aggression. The ambassador reiterated China's dedication to multilateralism and international peacebuilding, referencing the Global Security Initiative launched by President Xi in also spoke about China's humanitarian efforts, especially in relation to the Gaza crisis, highlighting China's role in supporting ceasefire efforts and providing aid. In his address on the occasion, Colonel Yang Yongzhi, defence attaché at the Chinese Embassy in Qatar, acknowledged Qatar's proactive role in global peace efforts under the leadership of HH the Amir. He commended Qatar's mediation in regional conflicts and its active engagement in counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and international security a founding member of the Global Counterterrorism Forum and a strategic partner of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism, Qatar has played a significant role in enhancing global resilience, he said. Col. Yang also highlighted the steady growth of China-Qatar military relations, marked by high-level exchanges, expanded naval and air force cooperation, and collaboration in military education and defense affirmed China's commitment to strengthening strategic coordination and promoting regional and global peace. He also outlined China's Global Security Initiative and the PLA's contributions to peacekeeping, maritime security, and humanitarian missions, including deployments in UN operations and disaster relief efforts worldwide.
