Packers-Seahawks fight: Punches thrown between Zach Tom and Ernest Jones IV as joint practice erupts in brawl

Yahoo10 hours ago
When the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks take the field for their final preseason game Saturday, there could be some lingering animosity between both sides. Both teams engaged in a brawl Thursday after punches were thrown during a joint practice.
The incident was captured by fans observing the practice. In the video, it looks like Packers lineman Zach Tom and Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV were the two players who threw punches before the rest of the teams got involved.
That wasn't the only scuffle at the practice. It sounds like at least one other fight broke out as the two teams went at it.
It's fairly common to see training-camp fights at this point in the preseason. Tensions rise as players engage in multiple days of hard workouts in extreme heat. At a certain point, those frustrations boil over, other resulting in players going at it in practices.
While Tom and Jones would be penalized — and ejected — during a regular-season game, the two are unlikely to face much punishment for Thursday's scuffle. Their teams may opt to discipline them by pulling them from practice, but the NFL is unlikely to get involved. The league usually allows teams to police themselves at this point in the season.
Any repeat of that brawl Saturday feels unlikely. Both players and teams know what's at stake if they fight in a game. Even if the two wanted to fight again, they might not get the chance. Tom and Jones are fully entrenched as starters heading into 2025 and may not even play in the final preseason game.

Steelers' preseason win marred by Derrick Harmon's injury

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Skylar Thompson completed 11 of 13 passes for 152 yards including a 24-yard touchdown strike to Lance McCutcheon, rookie Ben Sauls kicked four field goals and the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Carolina Panthers 19-10 on Thursday night in the preseason finale. The Steelers played a handful of starters on both sides of the ball, while the Panthers rested all of theirs and several top reserves. Getting some players extra preseason reps may have backfired on Steelers coach Mike Tomlin as defensive end Derrick Harmon, the team's first-round draft pick, was carted to the locker room because of a sprained knee in the first half. Harmon, the 21st pick in the draft, did not return and will continue to be evaluated. Tomlin said Harmon has a 'knee sprain of some description' and called the injury significant. He did not give a timetable on his return. Thompson entered the game in the second quarter in relief of Mason Rudolph, who started with Aaron Rodgers sitting out. Thompson, who started one game last season for the Miami Dolphins, completed his first five passes for 72 yards, including a perfectly-placed over-the-shoulder pass to McCutcheon in the left corner of the end zone for the game's first touchdown. Thompson also connected on a 53-yard strike to Scotty Miller, who finished with 82 yards on three receptions. Rudolph finished 6 of 8 for 36 yards, including an interception on an overthrow. Jack Plummer, playing in place of Bryce Young and the injured Andy Dalton, started slow for the Panthers with a red-zone interception on Carolina's third possession after escaping pressure in the pocket. But he battled back to complete 7 of 14 passes for 48 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown toss to a wide-open James Mitchell in the corner of the end zone to tie it at 10 before halftime. GIANTS 42, PATRIOTS 10 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Cam Skattebo saw his first game action for New York and Jaxson Dart had an eventful preseason finale by throwing a touchdown pass and clearing concussion protocol following a big hit, with reserves playing much of a rout of New England. Skattebo started at running back after missing much of training camp because of a hamstring injury setback and had three carries for 12 yards. Getting the the nod at quarterback with Russell Wilson and most of the starters sitting out, Dart showed some more promise along with a reminder he is a rookie. The first-round pick out of Mississippi completed 6 of 12 passes for 81 yards, including a 50-yard throw and catch with Gunner Olszewski and a touchdown to Greg Dulcich. Instead of sliding to give himself up on a run late in the first quarter, he fumbled when tackled by Jack Gibbens and was taken to the medical tent on the sideline to be evaluated for a concussion. Dart did not return, though it was not immediately clear if that was part of the coaching staff's plan going in. Veteran Jameis Winston replaced Dart and connected with Jalin Hyatt on a 27-yard TD on the next play. Dart finished the preseason 32 of 47 passing for 372 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, also running six times for 52 yards and a TD. He and No. 3 pick Abdul Carter, who was disruptive in the couple of plays he got on the field, were the captains for the pregame coin toss — a glimpse into what the organization hopes is its future cornerstones on offense and defense.

New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart looks like a future star

Yes, we know Jaxson Dart in the preseason was going against future plumbers and Canadian Football League players. (Not that there's anything wrong with that. Plumbers make a lot of cash and Canada is lovely this time of year.) Yes, we know it's preseason. Yes, things will be different when he goes against real NFL defenses. Yes, yes, yes. All true but just, for a moment, look at these numbers for all of Dart's preseason: 32 of 47 passing. 372 passing yards. Three passing touchdowns. Zero interceptions. Six rushes for 52 yards and a score. In 12 drives. 85768347007 Sorry to go all single paragraph on you with the stats, but that's a monster preseason. I'm not saying he's John Elway, but he reminds me of a young John Elway. Mike, what the hell are you doing? Keep Elway's name out of your mouth. It's preseason. Take a Xanax. I've tried to stay calm but in watching Dart closely this preseason you see in him what you do with young players who eventually become good in the NFL. Or great. There's a comfort Dart displays that is almost uncanny. He doesn't get rattled and looks like he's been in the league for years. It was clear that Dart was a good athlete. We saw that in college. But many times that athleticism doesn't translate into the pros. Even in the preseason. But, hoo boy, is it translating for Dart. New York Giants coach Brian Daboll has insisted that Russell Wilson is the starter but yeah that won't last. There's almost zero chance Wilson starts the entire season, injuries or no injuries. It would be stunning if Wilson lasted past Week 5. Dude, calm yourself. Calm. Yourself. You calm down. I'm just telling you what's going to happen. This is incredibly predictable and if I'm wrong I know you people won't hesitate to remind me. In all seriousness, what he's done is impressive. He started against the New England Patriots in the team's Thursday preseason finale and made an impact early when he scrambled and found Gunner Olszewski on a short pass. Olszewski ran for 50 yards. That drive ended with Dart throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass. Giants receivers dropped five passes and it didn't matter to Dart. Learning experience. Once, he got carried away on a scramble, didn't go out of bounds, and got hit from behind. Cameras caught Daboll telling Dart: "Slide." Learning exprience. Preseason is to regular season what a starship is to a shuttlecraft. In preseason, no defensive coordinator is spending the week hardcore game planning against you. Dart isn't seeing sophisticated blitzes and schemes. He's facing complete blandness and not even close to what the NFL has to offer in terms of defensive athletes. But when I watch him, I don't feel like the game is above him. Or too difficult and I think he can adapt. He'll make mistakes, sure. He's a rookie. Dan Marino made mistakes. So did Elway. (There you go with Elway again.) There will be ups and downs and risks but what he did in the preseason was fairly telling. Looking at the Giants' schedule the team seems unlikely to start him in the season opener against Washington. That would be a little much. Then come games against Dallas, Kansas City, the Chargers and the Saints. If Wilson is struggling, that Saints game might be a place to make a change. Yes, we know Jaxson Dart in the preseason was going against future plumbers and CFL players. But watch out, Russell Wilson. Watch out.
