"Recognition of his visionary leadership": Ravi Shankar Prasad on PM Modi receiving highest civilian honour in Cyprus
New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he received the highest civilian honour in Cyprus, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, from President Nikos Christodoulides on Monday.
The BJP leader described it as a 'proud moment' for every Indian and asserted that the award is a proud recognition of his visionary leadership and India's growing global stature.
'Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ji, being conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III is yet another proud recognition of his visionary leadership and India's growing global stature. This prestigious honour is a proud moment for every Indian!' posted Ravi Shankar Prasad on X.
The Order of Makarios III, the highest merit honour awarded in Cyprus, is named after Makarios III, the first president of the Republic of Cyprus. It is conferred upon heads of state and other people of significant status in recognition of meritorious service to the nation.
Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to President Christodoulides, the government and people of Cyprus for the honour.
'President, for the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, I express heartfelt gratitude to you, the Government of Cyprus and the people of Cyprus. This honour is not just mine, it is the honour of 140 crore Indians. It is the honour of their capabilities and aspirations. It is the honour of our country's cultural brotherhood and the ideology of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. I dedicate this honour to the friendly relations between India and Cyprus and our shared values and mutual understanding. On behalf of all Indians, I accept this honour with utmost humility and gratitude,' PM Modi said.
He further said, 'This honour symbolises our unwavering commitment to peace, security, sovereignty, territorial integrity and prosperity of our people. I understand the significance of this honour and accept it as a responsibility towards the relations between India and Cyprus.'He expressed confidence that the ties between two nations will touch new heights.
He stated, 'I am confident that in the time to come, our active partnership will touch new heights. Together, we will not only strengthen the progress of our two nations but also contribute towards building a peaceful and secure global environment.'
Christodoulides welcomed PM Modi to the Presidential Palace in Nicosia earlier in the day. The Cypriot President and PM Modi introduced each other to the delegates from their respective countries.
PM Modi reached Cyprus on Sunday afternoon (local time), marking the first visit by an Indian PM to the island nation in over two decades. He was received by the Cypriot President at Larnaca International Airport.
He received a heartfelt welcome from the Indian diaspora in Limassol. Upon his arrival, PM Modi, along with Cyprus President Christodoulides, interacted with leading CEOs during the business roundtable.
During the interaction, PM Modi spoke about India's reform trajectory in the last decade. In a post on X, PM Modi said, 'Boosting business linkages! President Nikos Christodoulides and I interacted with leading CEOs to add vigour to commercial linkages between India and Cyprus. Sectors like innovation, energy, technology and more offer immense potential. I also talked about India's reform trajectory in the last decade.

To regularise illegal houses, Goa govt plans bill to bypass comunidade
Panaji: State govt is likely to introduce two different bills in the monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly, scheduled to be held from July 22, to regularise illegal structures on comunidade land and govt land. The govt, through the bill, will empower the administrator of the comunidade to decide on the application — bypassing the comunidade — to regularise the illegal structures on the respective comunidade, not exceeding an area of 300sqm. Initially, govt wanted to issue an ordinance, but as the assembly was being summoned, state govt decided to introduce bills in the monsoon session. In 2012, BJP govt tried to consider regularising illegal houses that were built up to the year 2000 on comunidade properties in Goa, but it did not see the light of day as no comunidade gave any no-objection certificates (NOCs) to applicants. State govt has started discussions, and already three meetings have been held to finalise how illegal houses and encroachments can be legalised on govt and comunidade land. 'We held three meetings. Govt will bring two bills to legalise illegal houses and encroachments on govt and comunidade land. There will be a few more meetings to finalise the bills,' a senior govt official said. Collectors will decide on applications and collect the market price amount for the land from the applicant. Once the money is paid, govt will issue a sanad. 'On comunidade land, the deputy collector will issue an order, collect the amount, and issue the sanad. The comunidade will not have any role to play, but the money will be deposited in the respective comunidade once the land has been regularised,' a senior officer said, noting that this is still under discussion. While some ministers are pushing to finalise as soon as possible, there is opposition from other ministers in the cabinet as it will encourage illegalities in the state. 'The govt wants to have a cut-off date of 2025, which means all the illegalities will be legalised in the state,' the senior official said. In his budget speech, chief minister Pramod Sawant decided to regularise illegal structures up to 1,000sqm in urban areas and 600sqm in rural areas by amending the Goa Regularisation of Unauthorised Construction Act, 2016. In 2012, BJP govt tried to consider regularising illegal houses that were built up to the year 2000 on comunidade properties in Goa, but it did not see the light of day. Similarly, in 2001, BJP attempted to regularise the illegal houses. The govt even issued a notification in 2001, but the effort was in vain because govt did not take comunidades into confidence. G7 Summit 2025 Live Updates: Indian diaspora in Canada hopeful of renewed ties ahead of PM Modi's visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Canada on Monday to participate in the G7 summit in Kananaskis, marking his first visit to the country in ten years. PM Modi is currently on a four-day tour covering three nations — Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. After completing the first leg of his trip in Cyprus, he will head to Canada at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This will be Modi's sixth consecutive appearance at the G7 summit, which is scheduled to take place from June 16 to 17 in Kananaskis. 'At the summit, the Prime Minister will exchange views with leaders of G-7 countries, other invited outreach countries and Heads of International Organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues," the Ministry of External Affairs said in New Delhi. PM Modi is also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. His visit comes a little over a month after India's Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attacks. The Prime Minister last visited Canada in 2015, a trip that helped elevate India-Canada relations to a strategic partnership. In 2024, bilateral trade in goods between the two countries reached USD 8.6 billion, with India exporting goods worth USD 4.2 billion and importing USD 4.4 billion. Trade in services stood at USD 14.3 billion, with India's exports valued at USD 2.5 billion and imports at USD 11.8 billion. The upcoming G7 summit takes place against a backdrop of escalating global tensions, including the intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel and trade disputes driven by US President Donald Trump's tariff policies. Trump arrived in Kananaskis on Sunday for the summit and is expected to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday. The US President will also hold bilateral talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo during the summit. Canada took over the G7's rotating presidency on January 1, 2025. This year's gathering marks the 50th anniversary of the G7 summit.
