Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 30 (ANI): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, on Monday, inaugurated the annual conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), India Region Zone-2, in Tapovan, Dharamshala.
According to a release, the conference witnessed the participation of Speakers, Deputy Speakers, Chief Whips, and Deputy Chief Whips from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir, all part of Zone 2.
In addition, the Speakers of the Legislative Assemblies of Karnataka, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Telangana were present as special guests.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, while welcoming all the dignitaries and congratulating Speaker of Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Kuldeep Singh Pathania for organising the event, said that this conference was a significant initiative towards strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing legislative processes, fostering democratic dialogue, and promoting regional co-operation.
The Chief Minister stated that for the first time in the history of Himachal Pradesh, an attempt was made to overthrow a democratically elected government. However, the Speaker of Vidhan Sabha took a lawful stance and disqualified the concerned MLAs.
As per the release, CM Sukhu stressed the importance of the Anti-Defection Law in safeguarding democracy and said, 'The State Vidhan Sabha has passed a Bill to stop the pensions of disqualified legislators, which was currently awaiting the Governor's approval.'
He further emphasised that Himachal Pradesh has become a model for other States, especially in terms of digital democracy.
'In 2014, Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha became the first completely paperless Assembly in the country, with all proceedings conducted digitally,' the CM said, according to the release.
He also raised the issue of conducting by-elections only once a year under the proposed 'One Nation, One Election' framework and requested the Lok Sabha Speaker to take up the matter at an appropriate forum.
He also advocated for a separate policy for the hill States, keeping in view the tough topography, and said, 'The Nation cannot prosper if the States do not progress. Himachal has suffered due to the implementation of GST, and therefore, a separate policy should be formulated for Hill States.'
Sukhu further said that the State Government was committed to 'Vyavastha Parivartan' for ensuring good governance. Under the 'Sarkar Gaon Ke Dwar' initiative, Ministers have visited over 1,000 Panchayats to engage directly with citizens and address local issues at the earliest. He said that remarkable progress has been made in the fields of health and education.
'Himachal Pradesh secured the 5th position in the NAS Survey 2025, a significant jump from the 21st position in 2021, reflecting the State's commitment to quality education,' he added, as per the release.
The Himachal CM also highlighted the introduction of robotic surgery in the State as a landmark step towards modernising healthcare facilities. He also said that the government is adopting a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and has passed the Himachal Pradesh Organised Crime (Prevention & Control) Bill, 2025, which includes provisions for the death penalty, life imprisonment, heavy fines, and confiscation of the property of the offenders.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu reiterated the State's commitment to welfare schemes and agricultural reforms. Over 1.36 lakh government employees have been brought under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), and nearly three lakh women were receiving Rs. 1,500 monthly under the 'Indira Gandhi Pyari Bahna Samman Nidhi Yojana'. Ravindra Chavan appointed state BJP president: At party meeting, Fadnavis, Rijiju take aim at Oppn

Ravindra Chavan was unanimously appointed the new state BJP president at the party's council meeting held in Mumbai on Tuesday. Union Law Minister Kiran Rijiju made the formal announcement amidst thunderous applause. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, 'Ravindra Chavan's unwavering commitment and loyalty to the organisation earned him the highest post. He is a karyakarta who thinks and works for the organisation 24×7,' adding 'for the BJP the welfare of Maharashtra is supreme'. On the controversy over the three-language policy, he said, 'We are not one to work under anybody' pressure. We have constituted a committee that will take an appropriate decision. Students' interest will be kept in sight and mind.' 'We have always accorded Marathi highest priority. And made Marathi language mandatory,' Fadnavis reiterated. 'We are not against Hindi language. We take pride in all Indian languages. Unfortunately, our opponents distorted facts for politics,' he said. 'Our rivals always raise the false bogey of how Marathi and Mumbai are undermined by the BJP before every elections. They will now start shouting how the government is out to divide Mumbai from Maharashtra. But by now, people have seen the Opposition's gimmicks,' he added. Attacking opposition parties, Fadnavis said, 'During their tenure, sons of the soil were forced to relocate outside Mumbai. Whereas, after the BJP-led government came to power, we provided them homes within Mumbai. We have undertaken projects to transform the face of Mumbai and provide much needed relief to Mumbaikars.' Addressing the gathering, Rijiju said, 'In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the opposition misled people on the threat to the Constitution. But in the Assembly polls, the Maharashtra BJP came back with absolute mandate. The Congress, which talks of the Constitution, is the one which ensured Dr B R Ambedkar defeat in the Lok Sabha polls from Maharashtra.' Chavan expressed his gratitude to the party for the responsibility bestowed on him. 'We will devote our entire energy for organisational expansion keeping the 2029 Assembly polls in sight. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said, 'Fadnavis and Chavan should work together to make Maharashtra leader in every sector.'

Multiple Shots Fired At ISKCON Temple In US, India Urges Swift Action

San Francisco: The ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah, renowned globally for hosting the annual Holi Festival, has come under attack in a suspected hate crime, with over two dozen bullets fired at the premises over several days, causing significant structural damage. According to ISKCON, 20 to 30 bullets were fired at the temple building and surrounding property during nighttime hours while devotees and guests were inside. The incident resulted in thousands of dollars in damage, including to the temple's intricately hand-carved arches. Condemning the attack, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco expressed solidarity with the community and urged swift action. In a post on X, it stated, "We strongly condemn the recent firing incident at the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. The Consulate extends full support to all the devotees and the community and urges the local authorities to take prompt action to bring the perpetrators to justice." We strongly condemn the recent firing incident at the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. The Consulate extends full support to all the devotees and the community and urges the local authorities to take prompt action to bring the perpetrators to justice.… — India in SF (@CGISFO) July 1, 2025 A similar incident had occurred earlier this year when, on March 9, a Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu temple in Chino Hills, California, was found desecrated just days ahead of a so-called 'Khalistani referendum' in Los Angeles, according to temple authorities. The official page of BAPS for the United States shared the details of the March 9 desecration on the social media platform X and emphasised the community's resilience. "In the face of another Mandir desecration, this time in Chino Hills, CA, the Hindu community stands steadfast against hate... Our common humanity and faith will ensure that peace and compassion prevail," BAPS Public Affairs wrote. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) also pointed to the incident on X, linking it to rising anti-Hindu sentiment and noting that the vandalism came shortly before the planned 'Khalistan referendum' in Los Angeles. "Another Hindu Temple vandalised, this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA... Not surprisingly, this happens as the day for a so-called 'Khalistan referendum' in LA draws close," CoHNA posted, while listing other recent temple attacks since 2022 and calling for an investigation. Last year, acts of vandalism also targeted the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California, on the night of September 25. That incident followed closely after a similar attack on a BAPS temple in New York. Messages such as "Hindus go back" were found scrawled during those attacks, deeply alarming the local Hindu community. Despite repeated provocations, community leaders continue to affirm their unity and commitment to confronting hate.

Rap-punk duo Bob Vylan says it's being targeted for speaking up about Gaza at Glastonbury

Rap-punk duo Bob Vylan on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) rejected claims of anti-semitism over onstage comments at the Glastonbury Festival that triggered a police investigation and sparked criticism from politicians, the BBC and festival organisers. The band said in a statement that it was being 'targeted for speaking up' about the war in Gaza. Police are investigating whether a crime was committed when frontman Bob Vylan led the audience in chants of 'Death to the IDF' — the Israel Defense Forces — during the band's set at the festival in southwest England on Saturday. The British government called the chants 'appalling hate speech' and the BBC said it regretted livestreaming the 'antisemitic sentiments.' U.S. authorities revoked the musicians' visas. Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza has inflamed tensions around the world, triggering pro-Palestinian protests in many capitals and on college campuses. Israel and some supporters have described the protests as antisemitic, while critics say Israel uses such descriptions to silence opponents. In a statement on Instagram, Bob Vylan said: 'We are not for the death of jews, arabs or any other race or group of people. We are for the dismantling of a violent military machine. … A machine that has destroyed much of Gaza.' Alleging that 'we are a distraction from the story,' the duo added: 'We are being targeted for speaking up.' The BBC is under pressure to explain why it did not cut the feed of the performance after the anti-IDF chants. Britain's Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said 'the airing of vile Jew-hatred' by the BBC was a moment of 'national shame.' 'It should trouble all decent people that now, one need only couch their outright incitement to violence and hatred as edgy political commentary, for ordinary people to not only fail to see it for what it is, but also to cheer it, chant it and celebrate it,' he wrote on X. Avon and Somerset Police said it is investigating Bob Vylan's performance, along with that by Irish-language hip-hop trio Kneecap, whose pro-Palestinian stance has also attracted controversy. Kneecap member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh has been charged under Britain's Terrorism Act with supporting a proscribed organization for allegedly waving a Hezbollah flag at a concert in London last year. Since the war began in October 2023 with a Hamas attack on Israel that killed some 1,200 people, Israel has killed more than 56,000 people in Gaza, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.
