Three more Gerik crash victims laid to rest
JERTIH: Three more Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who were killed in the road crash on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Gerik, Perak on Monday (June 9) were laid to rest early on Tuesday (June 10).
The remains of Fatin Nasrien Fadil, 22, were buried at the Kampung Kerandang Cemetery here at 4.10am.
Around 100 people, including family members, friends, villagers, and Jabi state assemblyman Datuk Dr Azman Ibrahim-who is also the Terengganu State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee chairman-were present to pay their final respects.
Meanwhile, the remains of Fakhrul Arif Rosdi, 20, and Sufea Adela Maslihaizan, 21, were buried at the Kampung Pasir Akar Muslim Cemetery and the Kampung Gong Penaga Muslim Cemetery, respectively, at about 4.30am.
Earlier, funeral prayers for Fatin Nasrien, Fakhrul Arif, and Sufea Adela, along with 10 other UPSI students, were held at Masjid Hadhari here after the bodies arrived from the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh, Perak, at 2.55am.
It is understood that another eight bodies will also be buried early this morning.
Meanwhile, the bodies of Nurul Fatihah Abu Setaman, 22, and Nurul Izyanti Muhamad Azhar, 21, are scheduled to be buried around 9am on Tuesday at the Kampung Gong Duek Cemetery and the cemetery at Jalan Hospital Jerteh, respectively.
The remains of Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad and Muhammad Adib Hazim Halim were laid to rest earlier.
Wan Nur Suhaila was buried at the Kampung Amer Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Raja, Besut, at 11.37 pm last night, while Muhammad Adib was buried at the Kampung Pasir Badak Islamic Cemetery in Hulu Besut at 12.15am. Both bodies were brought from Gerik Hospital.
In the crash that occurred between 12.30am and 1am, 15 UPSI students were killed when a chartered bus travelling from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza on the JRTB near Tasik Banding.
The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Alza.- Bernama

Perak education, higher education, youth and sports committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said on Wednesday (June 11) that initial investigations confirmed the Facebook account responsible for the insensitive post belonged to a teacher at the school. Some UPSI crash victims only identifiable by clothing, says volunteer
KUALA LUMPUR: Some Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the Gerik bus crash on Monday were so badly injured that their remains could only be identified by their clothing, according to a volunteer who assisted in the post-tragedy response. Pertubuhan Amal Komuniti Besut chairman, Mohd Azizul Azli Mohd Sani, who led a convoy of 60 volunteers with hearses and ambulances from Besut, Terengganu, described the experience as one of the most heart-wrenching of his life. Azizul said the most unforgettable moment occurred at the Forensic Department of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) in Ipoh, during the identification and post-mortem process. "We left Besut at 10am on Monday and arrived in Ipoh around 4pm. "The area around the forensics department was packed with grieving next-of-kin. We witnessed some collapsing silently from overwhelming grief. "Most of the victims suffered severe injuries, and in some cases, families could only identify their loved ones through their clothing," he told Berita Harian. At around 1am on Monday, 15 UPSI students were killed in a crash involving the tour bus they were travelling in and a Perodua Alza along the East-West Highway (JRTB). The students were returning to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim from Jertih, Terengganu, after the Aidiladha holiday break. Azizul said some family members initially struggled to accept the loss and had to be comforted by police and counsellors before the identification process could begin. "Once they had calmed down, the identification started. I saw many relatives walk out of the forensics room in a daze, unable to speak. "It was as though the tragedy was too sudden to comprehend, but eventually, they came to terms with Allah's will," he said. He also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support shown by members of the public, including non-Muslims, who provided food aid to his team during their time at the hospital. "Imagine, we had a convoy of 18 hearses and two ambulances travelling from Besut since 10am. We had only eaten some bread in the van and went without a proper meal until the evening, sleeping briefly in the hearse while waiting for the forensic process to conclude. "Unexpectedly, many people, including members of the Indian community, came to deliver food such as nasi kandar, nasi lemak, burgers and drinks around 6pm. "This tragedy marked the largest mass remains management exercise our organisation has handled since its founding in 2018. "We also helped transport injured victims and their families back to Terengganu after they were discharged from hospital, without charging any fees," he added.

Cop charged with killing Nur Farah Kartini in Hulu Bernam plantation pleads not guilty
SHAH ALAM, June 12 — The policeman accused of murdering Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah, whose body was found in an oil palm plantation last year, pleaded not guilty to the murder charge in the High Court here today. Lance Corporal Muhammad Alif Monjani, 27, made the plea before Judge Julia Ibrahim, who then set July 15 for mention. The policeman was charged with murdering the 25-year-old woman at the SKC Kledang oil palm plantation, Hulu Bernam near here, between 9 am on July 10, 2024, and 6 pm, July 15 last year. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides a sentence of hanging to death or imprisonment for not more than 40 years and whipping of not less than 12 strokes, upon conviction. Muhammad Alif, who arrived in court wearing a T-shirt and accompanied by policemen, was represented by lawyers Nur Aida Md Zainuddin and Aida Jaafar, while the prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Maizatul Munirah Abdul Rahman. He was first charged with murdering the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris student on July 26, 2024, at the Kuala Kubu Bharu Magistrate's Court and on May 28, the case was transferred to the Shah Alam High Court for trial.
