Centre okays purchase of moong from farmers under price support scheme
New Delhi: The government on Thursday approved the procurement of 54,166 metric tonnes (MT) of moong under the price support scheme from farmers in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat for the summer crop season 2025–26 as part of the Centre's policy to incentivise the production of pulses in the country.
Similarly, the Government has approved the procurement of 50,750 MT of groundnut under the price support scheme (PSS) in Uttar Pradesh for the summer crop season.
Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also given approval to extend the period of procurement for red gram in Andhra Pradesh by another 15 days up to June 26, keeping the interest of farmers of the state.
In order to incentivise farmers and enhance the domestic production of pulses while reducing the country's dependence on imports, the government has permitted the procurement of tur (arhar), urad, and masur under the PSS up to 100 per cent of the production of the respective state for the procurement year 2024–25.
Furthermore, in the Union Budget 2025, the government announced the continuation of this initiative for an additional four years, up to 2028–29, wherein procurement of these pulses will be undertaken up to 100 percent of State production through the Central Nodal Agencies, namely the NAFED and the NCCF, with the aim of achieving national self-sufficiency in pulse production.
The Government of India is implementing the integrated scheme Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA), which encompasses the Price Support Scheme (PSS), Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS), Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), and Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF). The overarching objective of this initiative is to ensure assured and remunerative prices for farmers' agricultural produce, thereby protecting their income and securing their livelihood against market fluctuations. PSS is implemented as and when the market prices of notified pulses and oilseeds, and copra fall below the notified MSP during the peak harvesting period to provide a remunerative price to the farmers.

Shillong, In the wake of the sensational honeymoon murder in Sohra, the Meghalaya government on Friday decided to strengthen an existing legislation aimed at ensuring the safety of state residents and curbing the entry of criminal elements posing as tourists. The move comes weeks after the gruesome murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was killed during a honeymoon trip to Sohra, in a plot orchestrated by his wife and her lover. "The cabinet today decided to revisit the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act , 2016, an existing state legislation, to add more teeth to this Act to minimise the possibility of criminal elements entering Meghalaya in the guise of tourists," Cabinet spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said after the cabinet meeting here. "The government will soon come up with a formal proposal to further strengthen the MRSSA," he said. The 2016 Act was originally introduced to enhance the security of Meghalaya residents through the vetting of tenants and tourists. It allows for identity verification through a tourism-specific app and has provisions similar to those under the Inner Line Permit system, which the state has long been seeking from the Centre. According to Lyngdoh, the Assembly had adopted a resolution demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya. "The matter is pending before the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. There were several queries from the Ministry which the state government had addressed," he said, adding that the Union Ministry had expressed concern since Meghalaya is a transit state to other parts of the North East. The Cabinet minister also informed that the MRSSA is already a very effective legislation, which will need a little bit of "upscale" as of now. The urgency to revisit the Act was triggered by the case involving Sonam, the wife of murdered businessman Raja. She had allegedly conspired to kill her husband along with her lover and his friends, and entered Meghalaya under the guise of a tourist. According to Lyngdoh, the Cabinet placed on record its gratitude to the entire police department for cracking this case in record time and arresting all the accused, saving the state from a "bad name".

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the 241 people killed in the Air India flight, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday. The London Gatwick-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plummeted onto a medical college hostel and burst into flames. Vijay Rupani, 68, was a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader who served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2016 to 2021. He was reportedly travelling to London to visit his family. Over the years, India has lost several politicians to air accidents. A look back at some other prominent names: Sanjay Gandhi (1980) Son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and once considered her heir apparent, Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash in Delhi on June 23, 1980. The 33-year-old was flying a two-seater aircraft when it crashed during a test flight near Safdarjung Airport. Madhavrao Scindia (2001) A senior Congress leader and father of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Madhavrao Scindia was a prominent face in Indian politics and a member of the Gwalior royal family. He died in a chartered plane crash on September 30, 2001, in Bhogaon, Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh. He was on his way to address a rally in Kanpur. All on board were killed in the crash. GMC Balayogi (2002) The then Lok Sabha Speaker and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader died in a helicopter crash in Andhra Pradesh's West Godavari district on March 3, 2002. The chopper reportedly developed a mechanical fault mid-air. Dorjee Khandu (2011) Dorjee Khandu, the then Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, died when his Pawan Hans helicopter crashed in a remote area near the China border on April 30, 2011. The wreckage was found five days later.
