Sunderland will look to intensify efforts for Bayer Leverkusen's Granit Xhaka

Yahooa day ago
reports that Sunderland are now expected to intensify their efforts for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka.
A decision is expected this week on the future of the Swiss midfielder, as despite it being previously reported that Sunderland may not be able to agree a deal with die Werkself, the newly promoted Premier League side has not given up.
Leverkusen still demand €20m, but Sunderland are said to be open to paying the fee. Kölner-Stadt Anzeiger reports that die Werkself are open to a fee just below €20m. If Leverkusen receives this fee, Xhaka will be allowed to leave.
Die Werkself head coach Erik ten Hag has continued to campaign to keep Xhaka at the club as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Jonathan Tah have already left the BayArena this summer, while Lukas Hradecky could also follow out the door, this would leave Leverkusen with no recognised leader, as the axis of their title win and second place last season have departed.

Fabrizio Romano rubber-stamps another Man United summer signing as ‘talented' player seals deal

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed another signing through the door for Manchester United in the form of sought-after centre-half Harley Emsden-James. The 'talented' new arrival has joined from Southampton after attracting widespread interest for his stellar performances. However, United were quick to snap up the talent and beat other clubs to his signature, with Technical Director Jason Wilcox's links to the Saints proving integral in the deal getting over the line. Emsden-James, 16, is an England youth international who'll be vying to claim a spot in the Red Devils' Under-18s once 2025/2026 gets underway. Harley Emsden-James will look to follow in Ayden Heaven's footsteps Emsden-James' switch from Southampton to United was made official on Tuesday. (Photo via Manchester United) INEOS are said to be doing their utmost to recruit younger prospects in a bid to reduce their need to consistently buy senior players year after year. Last winter, 18-year-old Ayden Heaven was brought in from Arsenal on a four-and-a-half-year deal, and went on to make his senior bow just two months later when he was called upon to replace the injured Harry Maguire in a 30-minute cameo against Fulham in the FA Cup. The former Gunner featured in a further five matches before the campaign drew to a close, making his Premier League debut on March 9 and his first European appearance in the Europa League last-16 at home to Real Sociedad. Barring an untimely injury setback, he'd have likely gained even more experience throughout his first term as a Red. United's quiet summer window continues In regards to first-team acquisitions, the United faithful are well aware it's been an uneventful window thus far. Matheus Cunha signed almost straight away, whilst it took the board over six weeks to negotiate an agreement for Bryan Mbeumo. INEOS are now actively scouring the market for a prolific goalscorer to lead Ruben Amorim's line. Thomas Partey to feature on Premier League trading cards after Arsenal green light

Thomas Partey, the footballer accused of rape, will feature on the Premier League's official trading cards when they are released next month — after Arsenal rubber-stamped his inclusion. Topps, an American company that produces trading cards and other collectibles, announced a deal with the Premier League earlier this year that will see them manufacture the cards. Advertisement Arsenal confirmed they were in talks with Partey over a new contract as recently as last month, only for the midfielder to leave at the end of his deal after new terms could not be agreed. Four days after Partey left the club he was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The 32-year-old denies the allegations and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5. Topps confirmed to The Athletic that players are initially selected based on a number of objective factors, such as the number of minutes a player played in the previous season, how long they have been at the club, and whether they are an international player. The player selection for the 25-26 collection was finalised in May, with all player lists approved by Premier League clubs at that time. The list approved by Arsenal included Partey, despite an ongoing police investigation of which the club were aware, and the fact that he would become a free agent in the summer if a new contract with Arsenal couldn't be agreed. Of the 60+ players previously entering free agency this summer, only four — Partey, Nelson Semedo (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Josh Brownhill (Burnley) and Tariq Lamptey (Brighton & Hove Albion) — were included by their respective teams. After Premier League clubs submitted their final list to Topps, the trading cards almost immediately got put into production and are then randomly placed into packs and distributed to retailers. This means there is no way of knowing where the Partey cards are, so nothing can be done to prevent his card from hitting the shelves next month. Arsenal and the Premier League have been approached for comment. ()

Leicester City complete the signing of Asmir Begovic

Leicester City have signed veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic on a one-year contract. Begovic was a free agent after being released by Everton earlier this summer and had interest from several clubs before choosing to sign for Leicester. The Bosnian's move to Leicester will see him reunite with Marti Cifuentes, who previously managed him at Queens Park Rangers, where Begovic featured in 45 Championship games during the 2023/24 season. 'I feel really excited,' he told 'It's a pleasure to be here and a big honour to join such a great club. I can't wait to get going. It's not every day that a club of this stature gets in touch about joining. 'Hopefully we can have an exciting season where we can challenge at the top of the table and get the Club back where it belongs.' Having featured for Chelsea, Stoke City and Bournemouth in the past, Begovic brings a wealth of experience to Leicester City's goalkeeping department and will be expected to provide competition and mentorship. Begovic is Leicester's first signing of the summer window, but more arrivals are expected as the Foxes prepare for life back in the Championship following last season's relegation from the Premier League. Leicester are resigned to losing the likes of Wilfred Ndidi and Bilal El Khannouss and will need to replace them properly. The East Midlands outfit have one final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina to navigate this weekend before getting their Championship campaign underway at home to Sheffield Wednesday on August 10.
