Sullinger scores 34, Kent State takes down Stanford 77-75 in NIT
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Jalen Sullinger's 34 points led Kent State over Stanford 77-75 on Sunday night in the second round of the NIT.
Kent State plays Loyola Chicago in the quarterfinals.
Sullinger added eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals for the Golden Flashes (24-11). VonCameron Davis shot 4 of 15 from the field, including 0 for 4 from 3-point range, and went 4 for 7 from the line to add 12 points. Delrecco Gillespie finished 5 of 9 from the floor to finish with 10 points.
Jaylen Blakes led the Cardinal (21-14) in scoring, finishing with 23 points and five assists. Maxime Raynaud added 22 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for Stanford. Chisom Okpara also had 13 points, two steals and two blocks.
Kent State turned a four-point second-half lead into an 11-point advantage with a 7-0 run to make it a 67-56 lead with 6:13 left in the half. Sullinger scored 14 second-half points in the victory.

Freshman Bear Bachmeier to start at QB for BYU
Bear Bachmeier has won the quarterback competition at BYU, coach Kalani Sitake said Tuesday. "He settled it on the field. He gives us the best chance to win right now," Sitake said. He will become the first true freshman in program history to start Week 1 when the Cougars open against Portland State on Aug. 30, ESPN reported. Bachmeier will wear the unusual QB number of 47, which he showed off in a social media video while dressed as a bear. It's a quick turn for BYU, which saw starter Jake Retzlaff withdraw from school on July 11 amid news BYU intended to suspend him for seven games over a violation of the school's honor code. Retzlaff now is at Tulane. Bachmeier initially committed to Stanford and spent the spring in Palo Alto, but he entered the transfer portal in May and headed to BYU. Transferring with him from Stanford was his older brother, Tiger. Tiger caught 46 passes for 476 yards and two touchdowns over two seasons at Stanford. The Bachmeier name could sound familiar. Oldest brother Hank concluded his six-year career as a college quarterback in 2024 with Wake Forest after previously playing for Boise State and Louisiana Tech. Bear was a four-star recruit, as ranked by the 247Sports composite, in the Class of 2025. Tiger was a three-star in the 2023 class. The brothers are from Murrieta, Calif. Bachmeier bested transfers Treyson Bourguet, a redshirt junior from Western Michigan, and redshirt sophomore McCae Hillstead from Utah State, to win the starting job. Auburn football revises history, now claims nine national championships
Auburn football has posted several impressive seasons in its history; however, it has claimed just two national championships. Those records were rewritten on Tuesday as Auburn athletics and Athletics Director John Cohen have officially decided to claim seven additional national championships and three more conference championships, bringing its overall total to nine and 15, respectively. In addition to its 1957 and 2010 national championships, Auburn will now officially claim championships from 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, and 2004. Auburn Undercover, which was one of several outlets to break the news, shared a statement from Cohen regarding the decision to rewrite the history books and recognize more titles. "For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history – choosing to recognize only Associated Press national championships. Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches, and teams from Auburn's proud history. Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA's official record book and our peers across the nation." Here is a deep dive into Auburn's newly claimed national titles, and where the Tigers finished each season in the Associated Press poll. 1910 Auburn, then known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute, finished the 1910 season with a 6-1 overall record and a 5-0 mark in SIAA play, tying Vanderbilt for the conference title. Auburn stumbled on the road at Texas that season, 9-0, but it did not affect the Maxwell Ratings and College Football Rankings from selecting Auburn as national champions. 1913 Auburn dominated the 1913 season by finishing 8-0 and outpacing their opponents, 224-13. Its margin of victory over its foes is what led the Tigers to win the 1913 title, as Billingsley's MOV (margin of victory) listed Auburn as the 1913 national champions. 1914 Auburn also went unbeaten in 1914, not allowing a single point. Their lone blemish on their schedule was a scoreless tie with rival Georgia. James Howell's Power Ratings System recognized the Tigers as national champions this season, giving Auburn credit for its dominating season. 1958 One year after Auburn won its first "official" title, before Tuesday's announcement, Auburn built another unbeaten season, finishing 9-0-1 on the year and winning the national title thanks to a nod from David Montgomery. 1983 The first Auburn national championship of the "Associated Press poll" era took place in 1983 when the Tigers finished No. 3 in the final AP poll of the season behind Nebraska and Miami. Nebraska lost to Miami in the Orange Bowl that season, which was the de facto National Championship game. Despite not playing for the title, Auburn received seven first-place votes, 2.5 more votes than the Cornhuskers. 1993 Auburn's 1993 season was unforgettable, even if only a small chunk of the fan base got to witness the season live. The team was under probation following a pay-for-play scandal, which eliminated Auburn's chances of playing in front of a televised audience and playing in a postseason game. Despite the penalties, Auburn finished the season with an 11-0 record in Terry Bowdon's first season at the helm and was crowned national champions by the National Championship Foundation. Auburn finished No. 4 in the AP poll that season behind Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Florida State. Auburn was the only unbeaten team to finish the 1993 season ranked. 2004 The College Football Playoff would have come in handy during the 2004 season as four teams concluded the regular season without a loss. Auburn, USC, Oklahoma, and Utah were deserving of a chance to play for a title, but only the Trojans and Sooners earned the right to compete for it. Auburn concluded its SEC Championship-winning season with a 16-13 win over Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl, and four players from that roster went on to become first-round picks in the 2005 NFL draft. Two LSU football defenders earn preseason All-American honors
Two LSU football linebackers earned preseason All-American honors from the Associated Press on Monday. Whit Weeks landed on the first team with Harold Perkins joining the second team. Weeks and Perkins both missed spring practice after each had an injury that required surgery in 2024. Perkins tore his ACL in week four and was out for the year. Weeks was carted off the field in LSU's bowl win after playing the entire regular season. Both recoveries progressed as expected, and the duo is making a strong impression during fall camp. Weeks, a junior, is coming off a breakout campaign where he finished No. 2 among SEC linebackers in stops and pressures. With a strong year, Weeks will finish as one of the most productive linebackers in LSU history and compete for the Butkus Award. Perkins' narrative is a little more complicated. He was a star situational pass rusher in 2022, but he struggled after moving to inside backer in 2023. It's been an up-and-down three years for Perkins as he enters his redshirt junior campaign. Perkins will play the STAR role in Blake Baker's defense this fall. By all accounts, he's more comfortable there. There's still some uncertainty about how Perkins will look in 2025, but his raw athletic ability was enough to earn him a spot on the All-American list. Weeks and Perkins will take the field with LSU when the Tigers kickoff their season at Clemson on Aug. 30. LSU football coach Brian Kelly on what the return of Harold Perkins and Whit Weeks means for LSU "Presence is impactful, right? You see them, you feel them, you hear them. And so when somebody's not around in a room, you can kind of feel the temperature change a little bit. The temperature's a little bit different when those two guys are in the room," Kelly said at the start of fall camp. "People talk about missing somebody. It's hard to replace great players, but it's even harder to replace great leaders. And those guys lead by example and make a huge difference," Kelly said.
