Chandigarh: MP Manish Tewari flags fluctuations in city's Swachh performance
Urging the MC to 'up its game', Tewari said that in the category of 'source segregation', the city's performance has shown a drastic drop – from 100% in 2023 to 14% in 2024-25. 'This defies all logic and needs to be investigated,' said the MP.
Tewari had raised a question in the Parliament pertaining to the city's Swachh showing, asking the government whether it was aware that Chandigarh has failed to show improvement in categories of source segregation and garbage-free city despite being ranked under the Super Swacch League.
The MP had also sought details of year-on-year performance in Swachh Sarevkshan since 2016, particularly in indicators related to source segregation, waste processing and door-to-door collection. He had also asked whether it is true that Chandigarh has consistently failed to achieve 100 % source segregation and if so, the reasons for the same.
In response, Minister of State, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, Tokhan Sahu, besides providing the requisite data, revealed that large-scale citizen-contact programmes are being run in states and union territories to strengthen citizen participation, mass movements, and behavioural changes.
Along with this, waste management methods are being improved through capacity-building in states and urban bodies and dissemination of success stories.
MP Tewari said the cleanliness campaign should not be limited to rankings only, but there is a need for improvement and permanent change at the ground level.
Urging the Chandigarh MC to improve its work and ensure transparency and uniformity in data reporting and overall cleanliness efforts, he pointed out that Chandigarh's recent claim to the second place was not in the original open category, but in a new category of cities with a population of 3 to 10 lakh. In 2016, Chandigarh stood second in the category of cities with 10 lakh-plus population.
He also criticised the city's continued failure to achieve a 5-star rating under the garbage-free city certification, stating, 'Despite being promoted as 'City Beautiful', we are consistently getting only 3 stars. It should have been a cent percent rating.'

Highlighting irrigation achievements, the CM said that canal water coverage in Punjab's agricultural land had risen from 21% to 63% since he took office, with river water now reaching tail-end villages for the first time in history. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to conserving the state's water resources. The chief minister also stressed that the dreams of the martyrs remain unfulfilled due to lack of sincere efforts in the past, asserting that Punjabis' patriotism needs no validation from those in power. Mann announced that the state will organize historic events to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Later, during a visit to his native village Satauj, Mann interacted with residents and handed over a cheque of ₹1.76 crore to the panchayat for village development.

'It is necessary to have meaningful discussions on issues related to the public in the House. The public representatives can best express the sentiments of the public in the House,' he said. The UP Vidhan Sabha will be the first assembly to have a detailed discussion on the 'Vision Document', which will include suggestions from all parties for the overall development of the state, he added. 'This is not the agenda of any political party, but will be a shared blueprint for the future of the state,' he said. AI CAMERAS TO KEEP WATCH The assembly will now come under the surveillance of state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras. It will start as a pilot project in the monsoon session and will be fully implemented from the winter session. Through this technology, not only security but also the presence, activities and performance of the MLAs will be analysed. The AI-based cameras will have facial recognition technology, enabling them to identify the names and faces registered in the list of MLAs. Also, a detailed profile of every MLA will be fed into the system, which will include the name, party, constituency, gender, date of birth, photo and other personal details. Using AI technology, the system will record which MLAs attend the assembly, how long they stay, the number of topics they address, and the specific subjects covered in their speeches. Additionally, the AI will perform topic-based content analysis. CM INAUGURATES NEW DOME, RENOVATED HALL, CANTEEN The chief minister inaugurated a newly constructed dome at the entrance of Vidhan Bhavan, along with the renovated assembly hall number 15 and a VVIP canteen. SECURITY TIGHTENED AROUND VIDHAN BHAVAN Security around the Uttar Pradesh legislative building has been significantly increased. Local authorities have removed encroachments, streamlined vehicular movement, and additional forces will be deployed to ensure smooth and safe proceedings during the session.

Punjab:Burlton Park in Jalandhar revamp hits roadblock over tree felling
The much-hyped Burlton Park sports hub project hit a roadblock after the auction related to cutting down fully grown trees was deferred twice following strong objections from environmentalists. The project, which has remained in limbo for 17 years, is now estimated to cost ₹77.77 crore. As per the detailed project report, the Jalandhar municipal corporation had planned to cut 50 trees to clear the land for the construction of the new stadium. However, the corporation's plans irked the environmentalist organisations, which decided to move the Punjab and Haryana high court against the local body. Jalandhar Mayor Vaneet Dhir said the corporation had discussed the environmental concerns involving the project and decided to come up with an alternative to tree felling. 'We have come up with an alternative. The corporation will shift these fully grown trees to another suitable location within the Burlton Park. We have been identifying the places for relocation of the trees so that they don't come in the way of the construction of the new stadium,' Dhir said. He added that the issue will be resolved after a detailed discussion. 'We have ensured that nearly 300 more mature trees will be planted to ensure quick growth,' he said. The sports hub, which is to come up on 60 acres, will include outdoor sports facilities such as a cricket stadium, an astroturf hockey ground and a seven-a-side football ground (natural grass), each with separate pavilion areas. It will also have indoor sports facilities for multiple disciplines, including yoga, skating, cycling and jogging. Stalled since 2008 The project was first floated by the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) combine in 2008. In 2016, the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs announced that Jalandhar would be developed as a Smart City, with the sports hub set to be one of the key projects. In 2022, just before the state assembly elections, the then Congress government had awarded the project's tender to a Chandigarh-based firm, with a completion deadline of 12 months. But only the construction of the boundary wall was done. A sum of ₹1.13 crore was also released to the company, after which the MC terminated the tender. Dhir said after much deliberation, the municipal corporation has re-allotted the tenders to the same company, which was assigned the project earlier, for the construction of the sports hub. 'In the past few months, multiple meetings were held with contractors, who were assured that all the required logistics would be provided for the completion of the project,' said Dhir. It may be mentioned that CM Mann announced that Burlton Park will be renamed after a legendary Punjabi athlete, shedding its colonial legacy.
