He added that, according to industrial experts, the blast occurred during the air handling and drying of Microcrystalline cellulose.
'Today, at around 9.48 am, there was a blast in the drying unit at Sigachi Pharma Company. The explosion led to a fire. A total of 12 people have died and 35 are injured in the incident,' Nagi Reddy told reporters after visiting the accident site.
'As per industrial experts, the incident happened during the air handling/drying of Microcrystalline cellulose. We are currently unsure of the number of people under the debris,' he added.
Rescue operations, including those by NDRF, are currently underway.
Earlier today, Telangana Ministers Venkatswamy and Damodar Raja Narasimha visited the site.
Speaking to the media, Venkatswamy said that currently, 12 people are in critical condition, whose treatment is underway.
'Nearly 63 people reported for work at this factory this morning. Initially, it was said that a reactor blast had occurred in the factory. We have just visited the site, and we now know that it was not a reactor blast,' he said.
'The factory incharge also lost his life in the accident. There is no one here who can tell what exactly happened out of the 63 people who reported here in the morning. We have learned that eight people have died. Right now, four more bodies have been recovered. Twelve people are critical with burn injuries. The remaining 22 people have 20-25% burns and are receiving treatment. We will get more clarity in the next one or two hours,' he added.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in the explosion and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
In a social media post on X, the Prime Minister's Office wrote, 'Anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy at a factory in Sangareddy, Telangana. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.' (ANI)

Two accused in Parliament security breach case granted bail
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted bail to two persons accused in the 2023 Parliament security breach case, Bar and Bench reported. A bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar allowed petitions filed by Neelam Azad and Mahesh Kumawat for bail in the case, which was reserved on May 21, Live Law reported. The bail was subject to Azad and Kumawat furnishing a bail bond of Rs 50,000 each and two sureties. The two were also barred from holding press conferences or giving interviews, and posting anything on social media about the incident. The matter pertained to two men, Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, jumping into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors' gallery and opening gas canisters on December 13, 2023. Outside Parliament, Azad and a man – Amol Dhanraj Shinde – had opened smoke canisters and shouted 'stop dictatorship' slogans. All four were arrested in connection with the breach. A day later, the police arrested Lalit Jha, allegedly the mastermind behind the incident, and Kumawat, a co-accused. The police charged all six under provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Azad moved the High Court in September 2024 against a city court denying her bail, while Kumawat also filed an appeal in November against the rejection of his bail petition, the Hindustan Times reported. During earlier proceedings, Azad and Kumawat told the court that the police had wrongly invoked the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against them, adding that their alleged actions did not construe an act of terrorism. Azad said that her conduct did not amount to an act of terror as she had entered the premises using a valid pass and without weapons, the Hindustan Times reported. Kumawat said that his intention was to draw attention towards certain issues having democratic and political importance. However, the police argued that the breach coincided with the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, which was enough to prove that the intention of those accused in the matter was likely to strike terror or threaten the security of the country. On December 13, 2001, terrorists entered the Parliament complex and began shooting with AK-47 rifles. The attack had left nine persons dead. The police also submitted that those accused in the case wanted to bring back 'haunted memories' of the 2001 attack to the 'majestic' new Parliament building, Live Law reported. The bench, however, asked whether an offence under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act could be made out against those accused. It added that if using smoke canisters were a terrorist act, then every Holi and Indian Premier League match would also attract such provisions, Live Law reported.

Malayalam actor Minu Muneer arrested by Kochi Cyber Police over defamation complaint, later granted bail
Kochi (Kerala) [India], July 2 (ANI): Malayalam actor Minu Muneer was arrested by the Kochi Cyber Police following a defamation complaint filed by veteran filmmaker and actor Balachandra Menon. The arrest stems from allegations Muneer made on social media, which Menon claimed were defamatory in nature. She was released on bail shortly after being taken into custody. The Kerala High Court had earlier dismissed her anticipatory bail plea. She is the first accused in the case, which was registered in 2024. She reportedly made repeated derogatory posts about him on social media. Minu Muneer also filed a complaint against actor and MLA M Mukesh, who represents the Kollam Assembly constituency and is a leader of the CPI(M). Meanwhile, the arrest marks a new development in a controversy that has roiled the Malayalam film industry in recent months. In a series of social media posts and subsequent interviews, Muneer had publicly accused several prominent industry figures of sexual misconduct and abuse during their professional collaborations. In August last year, Muneer named actors Mukesh, Jayasurya, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Idavela Babu, alleging both verbal and physical harassment. She also mentioned Advocate Chandrasekharan, production controller Noble, and an individual named Vichu. "I am writing to report a series of incidents of physical and verbal abuse I suffered at the hands of Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, Idavela Babu, Jayasoorya, Advocate Chandrasekharan, production controller Noble and Vichu, in the Malayalam film industry," she wrote, claiming the incidents forced her to leave the Malayalam film industry and shift to Chennai. In a detailed account given to ANI, Muneer expanded on her allegations. "Once, as I was coming out from the toilet, Jayasurya hugged me from behind and even kissed me forcefully... After that, Idavela Babu expressed his interest in a sexual relationship with me," she said. She also accused actor-producer Maniyanpilla Raju of making inappropriate suggestions about her hotel stay during a film shoot, describing his behaviour as "unprofessional and unsettling." The incidents she referred to reportedly date back to 2013. The allegations surfaced in the wake of growing dissent within the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), following unrelated controversies that led to the resignations of director Ranjith and actor Siddique from their posts in the organisation. Over 40 held after violent protests break out at LPG bottling plant in Bengal
Tension gripped the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd's LPG bottling plant in West Bengal's Budge Budge on Tuesday night after a violent protest by drivers and porters broke out. The agitators are demanding payment of 'pending dues of three years'. Over 40 protestors have been arrested for the agitation which saw bikes vandalized, gas cylinders opened and fuel poured onto the streets. The unrest began on Tuesday night following a meeting called to discuss the 'long-pending dues'. The meeting was reportedly scheduled to be led by Jahangir Khan, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and party observer for Budge Budge, known for his proximity to Diamond Harbour MP and TMC All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. According to the protesters, the drivers were called at Khan's office in the area for the meeting when 'several miscreants suddenly came and attacked the drivers' and assaulted them. The assault triggered an immediate protest. On being informed, a large contingent of police from the Budge Budge police station rushed to the spot. The team was led by Additional Superintendent of Police Headquarters Amlan Kusum Ghosh. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) was also deployed. A protesting driver, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, 'We had to protest for our food. Our backs are against the wall. We were forced to take to the streets. Three meetings were held in a week but no solution was found. The leaders did not come forward to help.' Another protestor said, 'We are 300 drivers and 300 helpers working here. Each driver (is supposed to) get more than Rs 1 lakh. They want to pay 40 percent of our dues. We will not accept it.' Diamond Harbour Superintendent of Police Rahul Goswami said that Budge Budge police have launched an investigation into the incident. 'Police have set up a picket in the area due to tension. I am also keeping an eye on the situation. The police are collecting CCTV footage to identify the culprits,' he said. The protest drew sharp criticism from Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, who posted on X on Wednesday, calling it 'a glaring example of the TMC's syndicate culture spiralling out of control'. Adhikari said that 'a single spark could have ignited a massive fire, potentially engulfing the entire bottling plant near Budge Budge Institute of Technology (BBIT) College, Jagannath Gupta Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital, and surrounding areas in a deadly inferno.'
