FPL changes to points, transfers and chips for this season explained

The once straight forward Fantasy Premier League grows increasingly complicated, with changes to the points system, transfers and chips this season. The game has become more and more admin-heavy over the years, so it is important to keep on track of the new rules and regulations each season. There is always going to be someone in your league who is on top of everything and you don't want to fall behind because you are not as clued up. Picking the best players is just half the battle, deciding when to play the vast array of chips and take advantage of extra transfers are more things to worry about. Do not worry, though, we have got you covered on the things you need to know before the season gets underway. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. The new Premier League campaign begins on Friday night as defending champions Liverpool host Bournemouth at Anfield. That's the first stumbling block you must hurdle, don't miss the first deadline of the season on Friday at 6.30pm! Otherwise, here's everything you need to know. There are now going to be points on offer for players who make clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles. This means defensive midfielders will become a much more appealing option than they ever have before – although that is not hard as they were a complete non-starter before. Defenders of bottom half teams will also get a boost as they get more chances to make the defensive contributions. FPL have done the maths for last season and it was Everton's James Tarkowski who would have earned the most defensive contribution points, with a whopping extra 44 over the season. That's big! Defenders who make a combined total of 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles in a game will get two extra points. Midfielders and forwards can also earn these points and will be credited for clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles AND ball recoveries. However, they need to make a combined 12 of those actions to land two points. Chelsea's Moises Caicedo would have been a big hit for this last season, racking up an extra 42 points. The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) funs from December 21 to January 18 this season and has been a headache for FPL managers in the past. However, the kindly fantasy overlords have dished out some extra transfers this season to deal with the disruption to your team. The tournament will cover Gameweeks 17-22, so in Gameweek 16 there will be FIVE free transfers available. Make sure you have no free transfers by the end of Gameweek 15 to cash in on all five AFCON freebies. This is where your admin skills really need to be deployed, because there are now eight chips to use this season. The Wildcard, Triple Captain, Free Hit and Bench Boost chips are back but now you can use them all in the first half of the season and again in the second. More Trending You will be able to use all four chips up until the Gameweek 19 deadline on December 30 and then again after that date. They cannot be carried over. The Wildcard has been available twice in recent seasons, the other three chips are now joining it. Last year's bizarre and quite annoying Assistant Manager chip has been binned, quite rightly. There have been other changes this season, with the way assists are registered tweaked and minor alterations to the bonus system, but life really is too short to worry about such things. Pep Guardiola could be about to leave new Man City signing with serious concerns

James Trafford broke Championship records between the sticks for Burnley last season and returned to Manchester City hoping to be their long-term No.1 - now a formidable Italian problem could destroy his long-term plans James Trafford didn't walk into Manchester City this summer expecting to oust Ederson straight away. But he must have fancied his chances to get the No.1 shirt in the very near future from the Brazilian who is constantly linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium for the last 12 months. ‌ The Premier League club have yet to receive any contact for their current No.1. But Ederson's name is not often far from the Saudi Arabia conversation while Galatasaray are also interested in him. ‌ Yet now it has emerged that should a late bid come in for Ederson then City will swoop for PSG outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma - that's despite signing Trafford this summer. That's not good news for the England hopeful in a World Cup year. That's for sure. ‌ City brought in former player Trafford from Burnley in a £31m deal after they triggered a clause where they could match Newcastle's offer. They will pay £27m because they had a sell-on clause included in the deal when they sold Trafford to Burnley. Yet now the England international will find himself in a strange position should City sign another goalkeeper. There was a belief that Trafford would be understudy to 31-year-old Ederson this season before taking over next summer should the Brazilian move on. But it appears now City will be signing Donnarumma if they can find a buyer for their current No.1. Italy keeper Donnarumma is just 26 and at the peak of his powers. That would seem like bad news for Trafford, who at 22 will want to be playing. Donnarumma is available this summer after PSG boss Luis Enrique ousted him from his first-team squad despite his Champions League heroics last season. The French giants have spent over £40m on signing Lucas Chevalier from Lille as their new No.1 and Donnarumma has been exiled. The keeper has had an ambition to play in the Premier League and it appears now City would be his likeliest destination if he moves to England. Manchester United have been linked but they have currently no plans to enter into the race for his signature. Despite being booted out of the first-team squad, PSG will want around £30m to sell the Italian No.1 in the next couple of weeks. The keeper is understood to be stunned by PSG's actions. That's despite having just one year left on his current contract and no sign of agreeing a new deal for the last number of months. ‌ He was one of their star performers as they beat Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan on their way to European glory last season. Those around him believe his stats are also much better than the replacement PSG have bought. That also means he wouldn't be coming to City to sit on the bench and where does that leave Trafford? ‌ Being second choice this season to the long-standing No.1 would be tolerable with the knowledge that Ederson is seemingly itching to get a move soon. But he should be seriously concerned if Pep Guardiola goes out and brings in a high-profile keeper just weeks after returning to the club he came through the academy at.
