OHRC seeks report on ‘ban' on SCs from crematoriums in Odisha
BHUBANESWAR : The OHRC has asked the additional chief secretary in the Revenue and Disaster Management department and secretary of ST & SC Development department to submit reports on allegations of SC community people of Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack and Khurda being denied use of public crematoriums.
A complaint was filed with the OHRC by state coordinator of Bahujan Student & Youth Front Anil Mallick who alleged that there has been systemic exclusion of SC people from accessing public crematoriums and they are forced to cremate the bodies in open fields which is a violation of Article 17 of the Constitution, and the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
Citing an incident, he said in Jagatsinghpur district, a crematorium at Jaleswarpada village displays a casteist signboard 'Mohanty Sahi' and SCs are denied access.
In 2018, the state government had prohibited the practice of displaying caste signboards at crematoriums. In Cuttack's Dhurusia, they have been threatened of social boycott if they use the community crematorium. The OHRC has sought the reports by August 26.

We gave activists the space to voice their concerns, but the court's order must be respected.' CM Siddaramaiah highlights lack of social, educational data in Centre's census, justifies state's new survey
KARNATAKA: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday stated that to ensure social justice, it is essential to understand the social and economic conditions of the people. Speaking to reporters in Davanagere, the Chief Minister said the Union Government is conducting the Census from 2027 but has not indicated that it will conduct a social, educational, and economic survey. "What we are doing is a social, educational, and economic survey, which also includes a caste census," he clarified. CM Siddaramaiah added, "We have no objection to the Union Government conducting the census. However, there is a difference between our survey and theirs regarding the social, educational, and economic aspects." Objections were raised by both the general and weaker sections of society regarding the caste census report. Most importantly, Section 11(1) of the Karnataka Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prohibition of Transfer of Certain Lands) Act mandates a re-survey after 10 years of the previous report, CM Siddaramaiah clarified. He stated that the current re-survey is being undertaken based on this provision. Minister for Social Welfare H.C. Mahadevappa stated in Bengaluru that a caste census is necessary for delivering good administration, but the BJP has never undertaken such an exercise. He added that the BJP, which has been ruling at the Centre for the last two terms, has not bothered to conduct a caste census, implying that what was needed has not been done at all. The number of constituencies should not be increased on the basis of population," he stated. Senior Congress MLA, Laxman Savadi stated in Bengaluru that to address the shortcomings of the caste census, the state government is undertaking a fresh survey. According to Savadi, a few communities had opposed the caste census report, and to address this, the Congress high command had spoken to the Chief Minister, leading to the announcement of a fresh survey. He believes this new survey will rectify the lapses in the older one. Savadi further added, "This would help us. Let the central government also carry out a caste census; our caste census will help to analyse facts."

Cong to campaign against RSS-BJP 'hurdles' in Ambedkar statue installation
Madhya Pradesh Congress leaders on Tuesday said the party will launch a campaign against "hurdles" being created by the RSS-BJP in the installation of Dr BR Ambedkar's statue at the Gwalior bench complex of the MP High Court. Efforts were being made by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to negate Ambedkar's contribution as the architect of the Constitution, the opposition Congress leaders alleged at a press conference here. The Congress displayed posters and hoardings recently put up in Gwalior and alleged the BJP was trying to present BN Rau, a former civil servant and constitutional advisor to the Constituent Assembly, as the main architect of the Constitution. Congress general secretary and Madhya Pradesh in-charge Harish Chaudhary said it was unfortunate that a "controversy" was being created over the installation of Ambedkar's statue in the HC bench premises in Gwalior. "Under a well-planned conspiracy, questions are being raised on the contribution of the maker of the Constitution. Such controversies are starting from the Nagpur headquarters of the RSS," he alleged. The Congress will strongly put forth its point before the public on this issue during the 'Jan Jagran Abhiyan' and protect Ambedkar's honour, he said. State Congress chief Jitu Patwari claimed, "It is being propagated through posters in Gwalior that Babasaheb was not the maker of the Constitution." The Congress will run a public awareness campaign across the state in the honor of Ambedkar and the Constitution, he said. On June 23, the party leaders and workers will go door-to-door to hold discussions with the people, and on June 24, they will organise a community meal along with a discussion on the Constitution in poor settlements. On June 25, senior Congress leaders will sit on a day-long fast in Gwalior, Patwari said. Congress veteran and former state chief minister Digvijaya Singh said B N Rau was only an advisor, not a member of the Constituent Assembly, and that it was wrong to negate Ambedkar's contribution. "The RSS had burnt (copies of) the Constitution and opposed the tricolour, now it is opposing the installation of Babasaheb's statue and his contribution," he alleged. He accused the BJP of keeping silent on it and claimed this exposes its "double character". Leader of Opposition in the assembly Umang Singhar alleged that the BJP and the RSS were trying to change the country's history and promote class conflict. Ambedkar was being targeted because he belonged to the Dalit class, he claimed.
