'Thug Life' row: Will honour Supreme Court order, says Karnataka DyCM DK Shivakumar

Hindustan Times9 hours ago

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday urged Kannada activists to respect the Supreme Court's directive allowing the screening of Kamal Haasan's film Thug Life, following protests over the actor's earlier remarks on the Kannada language.
The apex court had pulled up the state government for not ensuring the film's release, stating that 'mob and vigilante justice cannot be allowed to take over the streets.'
Addressing reporters, Shivakumar said, 'We have to abide by the Supreme Court order with honour. Everyone has limitations. I appeal to various organisations that we must have our limitations.'

Several Kannada groups had staged protests, lodged police complaints, and warned cinema owners against screening the film, alleging that Haasan had insulted Kannada with his controversial comment about the language's history.
Appealing for calm, Shivakumar said, 'No one should take the law into their hands. Karnataka has always been a peace-loving state. We gave activists the space to voice their concerns, but the court's order must be respected.'

He further added that Bengaluru, as a global city, is known for its inclusiveness. 'We have accommodated all castes, cultures, and languages in this international city. The people of Karnataka have always been large-hearted.'
He also pointed out that no one can spoil the self-esteem of Kannada and the state government is also in favour of it but one has to honour the court.
Thug Life hit screens nationwide on June 5 but faced disruptions in Karnataka amid the controversy.

Won't tolerate threats of PIL by garbage mafia, says Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar Tuesday issued a stern warning to garbage contractors attempting to stall the govt's fresh tendering process for solid waste management in the city. His statement comes in the wake of a stay granted by the high court on the rollout of new garbage tenders — a move the govt had initiated to overhaul Bengaluru's solid waste management system. Reacting to the stay order, Shivakumar accused contractors of resorting to intimidation tactics, including the misuse of PIL petitions, and warned that the govt wouldn't yield under pressure. Speaking on the sidelines of a walkathon organised by the department of environment and ecology and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Shivakumar said: "Regardless of the work the govt takes up, some groups are constantly resorting to intimidation tactics by filing PIL or obtaining stay orders from courts just to threaten the govt. We won't tolerate this, and such tactics won't work." Questioning the motives of the contractors who challenged the new tenders, Shivakumar asked if the govt wasn't supposed to clean Bengaluru. When asked specifically about the court's interim order, he responded: "I'll look into it." Describing the network of existing garbage contractors in Bengaluru as a "mafia", he said: "Previously, there were 89 tenders. All those who bagged these tenders have formed a group. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 40+ Say This Wrinkle Serum "Really Delivered' (Shocking Results) The Skincare Magazine Undo This is nothing but a mafia. They think they can mislead us. But we'll expose them and apprise the court about their actions. We'll mercilessly remove those trying to obstruct us and provide opportunities to new players to develop Bengaluru," he said. This isn't the first time Shivakumar has levelled allegations against garbage contractors. During the budget session of the state legislature in March, he had alleged that a cartel of contractors had formed with the objective of undermining the govt's efforts. He had also expressed disappointment that certain legislators were supporting these groups, suggesting a pattern of collusion and blackmail. The govt's push for fresh tenders is part of a larger effort to streamline and modernise waste management, which has long struggled with inefficient garbage collection and disposal systems. However, the process has faced repeated legal and logistical hurdles, many of which the govt now attributes to entrenched interests.

Mamata Banerjee's new OBC list also hits high court hurdle

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee KOLKATA: Calcutta HC temporarily stayed Tuesday Bengal govt's new OBC list of 140 sub-groups - 80 Muslim, 60 non-Muslim - till July 31, halting a move that had replaced the earlier 113-group list struck down by the court in May last year. A division bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Rajasekhar Mantha paused the June 3 gazette notification and all related state orders, including the portal inviting OBC caste certificate applications. HC found procedural flaws in the state's execution under West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993, after the 2012 law had been adopted. "The next obvious step after passing the draft notification on OBC laid in the assembly would have been to introduce an amendment to the 2012 Act," said Justice Mantha. "You complied with the legislative procedure the court ordered in May 2024. But then you abandoned the 2012 Act and took steps under the 1993 Act." Justice Chakraborty questioned why the state was pushing ahead when the matter was pending before Supreme Court. "Keep your hands off until Supreme Court hears the matter. We are not going to pass any interim order," he said. Supreme Court's next hearing is scheduled for July. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Bengal govt is weighing a challenge to the temporary stay. "It is an interlocutory order, but there are grounds to appeal. The apex court was informed during the March hearing that a fresh survey was underway," a senior official said. The new list expanded the number of Muslim sub-groups from 77 to 80 and non-Muslim groups from 36 to 60. CM Mamata Banerjee had defended the formula last week: "Backwardness, not religion, was the sole criterion in the fresh OBC survey in Bengal." The stay could affect admissions and recruitment as current OBC reservations will drop below 17% without the expanded list. Senior counsel S Sriram, representing the petitioner, said the executive had no authority under the 2012 Act to declare OBC reservations. "The 2012 Act explicitly states that only the legislature can make provisions for reservation under the Act or Article 16(4) of the Constitution," he said.
