Caste census: Pilot seeks to put government on mat, questions timing & intentions

NEW DELHI: Calling for more clarity on caste based census, the Congress on Tuesday urged the government to clarify the reasoning behind the low budget allocation, stop the delay tactics, and conduct the census with the same integrity demonstrated by Telangana. Addressing the media in the capital, senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot hit out at the union government for no official mention about the caste census on Monday's official notification announcing the delayed census. The caste census would meet the same fate as that of the Women Reservation Bill, which the government postponed even after it was passed in the Parliament, he said. 'Is the 2027 census being timed to engineer a new delimitation that benefits BJP-ruled states?' he asked. The Congress general secretary said that while India missed its scheduled census date of 2021, with the enumeration now having been pushed to 2027, there is no mention of a caste census in the notification. Citing the Telangana model, he said that the state government issued a notification that explicitly mentioned the word 'caste'. 'The state government made it clear that it would carry out a household survey to assess social, educational, economic, employment, political, and caste-related parameters,' he added.

Caste census: BJP livid, calls out Congress's ‘false propaganda'

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Tuesday alleged that the Congress is carrying out 'false and misleading' propaganda regarding the Census 2027, as it hopes to gain power by claiming that society is falling apart due to the Narendra Modi-led government's decision to include caste enumeration in the nationwide exercise. Lambasting the Congress for 'misleading' people with false claims, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged that the prime objective of the opposition party by resorting to such a 'petty' act is to create confusion in society and gain power. Since it is witnessing its objective falling apart, the Congress has resorted to spreading 'falsehood, deception and lies', he told reporters at the BJP headquarters on Tuesday. Trivedi stated that government media releases had mentioned that, in addition to the census, a socio-economic assessment and a caste census would also be conducted. 'Marred by its myopic view and blurred vision, they (Congress) are unable to see and understand this categorical explanation,' he charged.

Hyderabad govt rolls out Rythu Bharosa scheme; non-arable land excluded from benefits and Rs 2,349 crore disbursed

HYDERABAD: The Congress govt has clarified that the removal of nearly 2.95 lakh acres from the Rythu Bharosa scheme was due to ineligibility, and not any imposed acreage cap. The state govt launched the ambitious farmer support scheme on Monday without restricting landholding size. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Instead, the only criterion was that the land had to be arable. Non-arable parcels - such as roads, rocky terrain, real estate plots, or land left uncultivated for over four years - were excluded. This rationalisation helped the govt save approximately 170 crore. Senior officials said that even if land isn't currently under cultivation, as long as it is suitable for agriculture, it qualifies for benefits. Moreover, land that can be developed into arable plots will be considered for support in that season itself, making the exempted acreage dynamic across seasons. Earlier speculation suggested the govt might cap benefits to landholdings of up to 10 acres. However, this did not materialise. "We prioritised the core principle - supporting those with land suitable for agriculture," said officials. Farmers who recently received pattas (land titles) have been given until June 20 to apply. On the second day of disbursement, agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao announced that 1,551 crore had already been transferred to 10.45 lakh small farmers with up to three acres. He assured that all eligible farmers - regardless of land size - would receive their share shortly, and no one would be left out. Funds are being directly credited into bank accounts, avoiding any transaction issues. Chief minister A Revanth Reddy kicked off the scheme on Monday by crediting 6,000 per acre into the accounts of farmers owning up to two acres. So far, 2,349.83 crore has been distributed for 39.16 lakh acres, covering 41.25 lakh farmers. The total outlay for the nine-day rollout stands at 9,000 crore.
