The ‘ARC Raiders' Alpha Gained Players Nearly Every Single Day
The second Closed Alpha test of ARC Raiders got a lot of attention this week as word spread about the new extraction shooter.
That positive word of mouth led to a significant achievement, an increase in the number of players every day minus a tiny tick down last night, reflecting glowing sentiments about the game and also more codes being issued over time.
ARC Raiders will be a new entry in the extraction genre releasing some time this year, it's claimed. But after experiencing the Alpha it seems pretty close to ready at this point, and many are predicting developer Embark may pull off another shadow drop this summer like they did with The Finals, their other PvP game that you may not realize has in fact maintained a solidly consistent playercount over time.
Arc Raiders
Pretty quickly, ARC Raiders demonstrated how it was a somewhat less hardcore, but appealing version of Tarkov with traditional extraction elements ranging from crafting to home base upgrades. The game itself features harrowing robotic PvE enemies, including one hulking boss that was only defeated 58 times total as tens of thousands of players played the Alpha. And of course, there are plenty of PvP fights as well, the core of the experience and there have been some pretty funny clips already from the test.
What stood out most to me as I played was the sound design, relying more heavily than most other games I've ever played on footsteps, gunfire and often looting, prying open extremely loud containers or setting off blaring alarms when looting big drops. Yes, other games have this but it's also how it sounds. I've never been so terrified of cracking gunfire nearby or grit my teeth as hard as when I'm jamming a crowbar into a screaming rusted box.

Yes, all this is inevitably leading to the performance of the game versus Marathon, another high profile extraction shooter that has been running a Closed Alpha simultaneously, though a game that is obviously far less finished than ARC. It was a stark contrast in reception, and Bungie's new shooter lacked many of the extraction elements fans of that genre want, Alpha or not, while also feeling somewhat inaccessible to new players, especially those hoping to play solo. More than ARC, anyway. As such, the Marathon Closed Alpha lost PC players every day, the inverse of ARC, though some of that may be due to the somewhat inexplicable decision to barely give out new codes despite always promising more.
There are still too many unknowns to know what will happen with Marathon, but ARC? ARC seems destined to be at least some level of genre hit. I am not expecting insane numbers or the ability to dethrone Tarkov. But if it settles into a Finals cadence, I think Embark would be just fine with that.

Chris Martin addresses couple from Coldplay concert jumbotron scandal
Chris Martin is setting the record straight on the "internationally massive scandal" that emerged from that Coldplay concert jumbotron "debacle" that took the internet by storm. During the jumbotron portion of the Music of the Spheres tour concert in Kingston upon Hull's Craven Park in England on Aug. 19, the frontman pushed back against the "kiss cam" headlines about a tech CEO who resigned from his role after appearing to have an affair with a colleague. "I'm going to say this once and once only. It's not, never will be, and never was a kiss cam. … We put one couple and you're branded a kiss cam for the rest of your life. It's unbelievable," Martin said, according to fans' videos from the show. "This is called a jumbotron, and we've done this for a long, long time," the singer continued. "We pick people out to say hello. And sometimes they turn up to become an internationally massive scandal, sure. But most of the time we're just trying to say hello to some ... people, that's all!" As Martin wrapped his public service announcement, he shared a sweet message to the people who were caught canoodling on July 16. "Anyway, we send pure love to those people, and I wish them so well," he told the crowd. Chris Martin calls CEO controversy a 'debacle' This wasn't the only time Martin brought up the incident since the band's return to the U.K. on tour. When introducing the jumbotron portion of the concert in which "we'll try to say hello to some of you on camera," the crowd erupted in knowing laughter as Martin chuckled, according to another video. "You were at that Boston gig! OK, well, thank you for coming again after that debacle," Martin said in reaction to a fan's sign, according to videos and reports from the band's first night in Craven Park on Aug. 18. "We've been doing this a long time, and it's only recently that it became a … Yeah. So," Martin added. "Life throws you lemons and you've got to make lemonade." Coldplay wrapped its North American leg of the long-running tour in Miami Gardens on July 27 and took a three-week break before launching into its final leg in the U.K. What happened with Astronomer CEO Andy Byron? Martin's comments come a month after he offered commentary during the band's July 16 show at Gillette Stadium that turned uncomfortable after a camera operator broadcast a couple embracing, only for the two to conceal themselves. The woman hid her face as the man ducked down. "Come on, you're OK!" Martin told the couple before quipping, "Uh oh. Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy." Following the viral scandal that prompted internet sleuths to identify those seen in the footage, New York tech company Astronomer said it had placed CEO Andy Byron on leave on July 18. The next day, on July 19, the company posted on X and LinkedIn that Byron "has tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted." "As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding," Astronomer's statement reads. "Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met." After widespread criticism for how the company reacted to the controversy, Astronomer released a tongue-in-cheek video with "temporary spokesperson" Gwyneth Paltrow, Martin's ex-wife, in an effort to rehabilitate its image. Actor son of murder-suicide victim issues stepdad funeral plea
An actor whose mother was the victim of a murder-suicide in France has urged her friends not to attend his stepdad's funeral. Callum Kerr, who appeared in Hollyoaks and Netflix's Virgin River, said it would be "inappropriate" for the memory of his mother, Dawn Searle, to be associated with her husband Andrew Searle. The couple's bodies were discovered by a neighbour at their country home in the Aveyron region on 6 February. The prosecutor in charge of the case previously told the BBC it was murder followed by suicide and there was no evidence that another person was involved. The statement, issued on Kerr's Instagram account on behalf of the actor and his sister Amanda, comes more than six months after the couple were found dead. It is unclear why it has taken so long for Mr Searle's body to be released by the French authorities or when his funeral is scheduled to take place. Deaths of British couple in France treated as murder-suicide Actor's grief after mum and husband die in France French prosecutors confirm how British couple died Mr Kerr, who is also a country singer in the US, and his sister said that while the investigation into the deaths was ongoing they "cannot ignore the circumstances as they stand". The statement continued: "For this reason, we must respectfully but firmly request that our mother not be included in any way in the funeral arrangements being made for Andrew." They urged friends of their mother's not to attend the ceremony and asked people not to share photographs of Mr and Mrs Searle together. The statement concluded: "It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death. "We ask for understanding, privacy and respect as we continue to grieve and seek justice for our mum." Mrs Searle's body was found in the garden of the couple's property in the hamlet of Les Pesquiès, with severe wounds to her head. Mr Searle's body was found inside their home, about an hour north of Toulouse. Police were alerted to the incident by a neighbour who had gone to check on them when they failed to turn up for a planned dog walk. Post-mortem examinations confirmed Mrs Searle suffered "multiple blows to the head with a blunt and sharp-edged object" while Mr Searle died from hanging. Mrs Searle, 56, grew up in Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders, and Mr Searle, 62, was originally from England. They previously lived in Musselburgh, near Edinburgh, and married in France in 2023. Prosecutors said they had lived in the Aveyron region for five years. According to his LinkedIn page, Mr Searle previously worked in financial crime prevention at companies including Standard Life and Barclays Bank.
