Published on: Tue, Jun 17, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji said efforts to preserve cultural heritage would also help attract more tourists to Sabah, in line with the State Government's target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals this year. - Facebook pic Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government remains committed to implementing comprehensive initiatives aimed at preserving and strengthening the cultural heritage of the State's multi-racial communities, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said the ongoing efforts were crucial to ensure the State's cultural treasures continued to be preserved, appreciated and passed down to future generations amid rapid global changes.

The younger generation are not just inheritors but also guardians of the heritage that will shape the future of this State. 'The preservation of cultural heritage is essential to ensure the continuity of a community's identity, values and traditions. 'I, therefore, hope that ethnic associations in the State will continue to promote their respective cultures, customs and languages so that they are not lost over time,' he said in a statement in conjunction with the Sabah Ethnic Day celebration, here, Sunday night. The event was officiated by Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman, who was accompanied by his wife Toh Puan Faridah Tussin. Also present was Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also State Local Government and Housing Minister. Hajiji said efforts to preserve cultural heritage would also help attract more tourists to Sabah, in line with the State Government's target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals this year. 'The spirit of goodwill in diversity is the foundation of the people's strength in this State. Russian strikes kill 14 in 'horrific' attack on Kyiv
KYIV: Russia fired scores of missiles and drones at Kyiv on Tuesday, killing at least 14 people and wounding dozens in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called "one of the most horrific attacks" on the capital. The strike was one of the deadliest on Kyiv since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, and came as direct peace talks between the two sides appeared to stall. Zelenskyy said "an entire section of an apartment block" was destroyed and rescuers were searching under the rubble for possible survivors. AFP journalists heard drones flying over the city and explosions ringing out as Ukrainian air defence systems attempted to intercept the barrage. Dozens of residents took shelter in a metro station in central Kyiv, sleeping on mats, exchanging information on the drone and missile threat or reassuring pets, AFP journalists saw. Residents in Kyiv told AFP the attack was one of the strongest in recent memory. "It was probably the most hellish night in my memory for our neighbourhood," 20-year-old Ukrainian student Alina Shtompel told AFP. "It is indescribably painful that our people are going through this right now." Some 27 locations in Kyiv were hit, Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said. One person was also killed and 10 wounded in a strike on the southern port city of Odesa, while attacks on the Sumy and Kherson regions later in the day killed two others, authorities said. A total of 440 drones and 32 missiles were used in the strikes nationwide, Zelensky said. "Kyiv has faced one of the most horrific attacks," the Ukrainian leader wrote on Facebook. "Right now in Kyiv, efforts are underway to rescue people from under the rubble of an ordinary residential building – it's still unclear how many remain trapped." He urged the international community not to "turn a blind eye." Russian President Vladimir "Putin does this solely because he can afford to continue the war. He wants the war to go on," he said. Another Kyiv resident, Sergiy, said his windows were shattered during the strikes. "I was asleep. There was a loud bang. The window was smashed, and glass rained down on me," he said. Residential buildings, educational institutions and "critical infrastructure facilities" were all hit, Interior Minister Igor Klymenko wrote on Telegram. A total of 114 were wounded in the attack on Kyiv, 68 of them hospitalised, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said. He reported earlier that a US citizen had died in a Russian attack on the capital's Solomyansky district. "During the attack on Kyiv... a 62-year-old US citizen died in a house opposite to the place where medics were providing assistance to the injured," Klitschko said on Telegram. Zelenskyy's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said the new strikes showed Moscow was "continuing its war against civilians." More than three years into its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has kept up its attacks despite efforts by the United States to broker a ceasefire. Talks have stalled. Moscow has rejected the "unconditional" truce demanded by Kyiv and its European allies, while Ukraine has dismissed Russia's demands as "ultimatums."

No fairness with RM43b for Peninsula, nothing for Sabah

"Where's the fairness and justice for Sabah when you committed via TNB RM43 billion to upgrade the national grid in Malaya, but there's no mention of upgrading the Sabah grid to 500 kV or building the much-needed southern link from Sipitang to Tawau?" asked LDP Supreme Council member Peggy Liow. Advertisement She said Anwar's silence during his Energy Asia 2025 speech on Sabah's power crisis shows a lack of federal commitment, despite Sabahans enduring years of power outages and insufficient supply. 'Sabah's energy regulatory powers may now lie with ECOS, but funding electricity infrastructure remains a federal responsibility under the Constitution,' she added, pointing out that the federal government owns 83pc of Sabah Electricity. LDP is calling for RM10 billion in federal funding, RM8 billion for large-scale gas power plants and RM2 billion for a 500 kV grid upgrade and southern transmission link. 'These are urgent needs, not wants. There's no need to beg, it's the federal government's duty,' Liow stressed. She urged all Sabahans, regardless of political affiliation, to unite in demanding action, adding, 'We've raised this issue before. Still, there's been no positive response.' Loud booms heard over Jerusalem, Tel Aviv as Iran launches missiles
JERUSALEM: Loud booms were heard over Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on Tuesday, AFP journalists reported, after air raid sirens sounded in several parts of Israel and the military warned of incoming Iranian missiles. "A short while ago, sirens sounded in several areas across Israel following the identification of missiles launched from Iran toward the State of Israel," the military said in a statement. It added that the air force was "operating to intercept and strike where necessary to eliminate the threat." Around 20 minutes later, the army released a statement saying people were allowed to leave protected spaces in several areas across the country. It said search and rescue teams were operating in several locations where "reports of fallen projectiles were received." In a statement on Telegram, the Israeli police reported that "missiles and shrapnel fell in the Tel Aviv area, causing material damage but no injuries." The fire and rescue service said there was an initial report of a "missile strike and fire" in the Dan district, an area surrounding Tel Aviv. "Around 08:45 (0545 GMT), numerous calls were received... regarding a missile strike and a fire in the Gush Dan area. Firefighting forces are on their way to the scene," it said in a statement. Despite growing calls for the longtime foes to end hostilities, neither Israel nor Iran showed any signs of cutting short the missile blitz that kicked off Friday, when Israel launched an unprecedented series of aerial raids targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities.--AFP
