Can resume gap from decades ago affect job chances? HR's bizzare interview question to techie sparks Reddit debate

Time of India5 hours ago

In today's fast-evolving job market, candidates are often judged not just by their skills and qualifications, but also by the gaps in their résumés. While short career breaks can still raise questions, a recent online debate is shining a spotlight on how far back such scrutiny should go. The controversy began when a job applicant shared that he was asked to explain a gap from nearly 30 years ago during a recent interview — prompting many to ask whether employers are taking due diligence too far.
In a recent Reddit post a user shared an unusual interview experience. The post, titled 'Asked me about a gap 30 years ago', described how a 47-year-old candidate applying for a management role in the tech industry was asked to explain a three-year period from the late 1990s—specifically the years following high school.
During a team interview with a German company, one of the HR representatives questioned the candidate about what he had done between 1996 and 1999. Taken aback, the applicant replied that if he listed every job he ever had, his résumé would run ten pages long. He then clarified the nature of the work he did during that period but expressed surprise that such an old gap was even brought up. 'I can understand asking about a gap from a year or two ago, but nearly 30 years? What's the relevance?' he asked.

Absurd or Standard Practice?
The post prompted strong reactions from the Reddit community. Many users were quick to criticize the line of questioning, calling it outdated and irrelevant. One commenter bluntly stated that the interviewer was out of touch, while others speculated the approach could be tied to strict hiring norms in certain regions. Several pointed out that German companies are often known for rigid HR protocols, which may explain the scrutiny—even if it seems excessive.
A few users attempted to rationalize the behavior. One noted that some interviewers ask offbeat questions to test how candidates respond under pressure. Others, however, felt this specific instance went too far. One commenter said that asking someone in their late 40s to account for a gap from when they were barely out of their teens served little real purpose, unless the company was searching for red flags like prison time or serious legal trouble.
Concerns About Gaps and Hiring Bias
This incident also revived broader concerns about how employment gaps are viewed in the job market. Several Redditors shared similar experiences of being penalized for time taken off work, whether for travel, personal reasons, or simply difficulty finding a job.
One user recalled losing an offer because the hiring manager could not accept a one-year break taken for travel, despite clear proof of the trip. Another said they stopped including exact months on their résumé just to avoid such scrutiny over short or outdated gaps.
There was also criticism of the assumption that gaps inherently reflect something negative. 'Some people can afford to take time off between jobs. Others struggle to find opportunities. That shouldn't automatically raise doubts,' a commenter wrote.
The Bigger Picture
While opinions varied, a general consensus emerged that focusing too heavily on decades-old résumé gaps may reflect more about the interviewer than the applicant. Some users argued that companies conducting such rigid assessments risk losing qualified candidates over irrelevant details.
Others emphasized that due diligence during hiring should focus on current competencies, relevant experience, and cultural fit, rather than outdated assumptions about linear career paths.

Nagpur solar capital? Waaree, Reliance, B'luru firm seek land for solar panel projects

Nagpur: The solar power equipment manufacturing sector is set to expand in the city with more players entering the fray. After Avaada Electro began production last month, three more companies are set to start operations at Butibori. Reliance Infrastructure has put up a request before Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to acquire over 1,000 acres of land. Waaree Energies, which has been allotted 300 acres in Butibori Industrial Estate of MIDC, has applied for an additional 700 acres, said sources. A Bengaluru-based company, Powerin Urja, has also put up a request for 200 acres near the city. MIDC has initiated the process of acquiring land on behalf of the companies, said sources. The three companies plan to manufacture solar panels, a key component for generating solar power. The developments indicate Nagpur will soon emerge as a hub for solar power equipment manufacturing, said sources. Last month, Avaada Electro, the first in the sector to start operations, began manufacturing solar panels and emerged as the first to make 720Wp solar panels in the country. The company also plans to manufacture solar cells by October. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Guayaquil: Inicia hoy con Amazon CFD y construye un segundo ingreso. Honeywell's India business to enter $1billion club this year

Bengaluru: Honeywell's India business is set to enter the $1 billion revenue club in the 2025 calendar year, up from $900 million, fuelled by the convergence of 5G, cloud, and AI, creating a strong growth tailwind. "India provides an opportunity to grow at double-digits over the next several years for companies like us. It's one of our fastest-growing markets globally. We plan to be a $1 billion company in 2025. The convergence of AI, 5G, and cloud—a powerful trifecta transforming the industries we serve. This unique combination creates significant promise and marks a major inflection point in AI adoption," said Ashish Modi, president of Honeywell India. Honeywell has been present in the country for over nine decades, from licensing technology for the first refinery at Digboi in Assam in the 1930s to supporting the 100 smart cities initiative. Its business powers three megatrends—automation, aviation, and energy transition. It also delivers solutions across aerospace, industrial and building automation, and energy. At the core of Honeywell's technology transformation is its AI-driven platform, Forge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Irish homeowners eligible for solar 'bonus' if they live in these eircodes Activ8 Learn More Undo Designed to ingest and contextualize diverse data sets, serves as a cross-industry IoT platform that drives digital transformation across people, processes, and assets Honeywell in India has three manufacturing facilities and four global centres of excellence for technology development and innovation. It employs close to 13,000 people across 20 locations in the country. "Over 60% of Honeywell's global software development happens in India, marking a significant Make in India contribution," he said. AI is embedded in three key areas—products. AI-powered tools like Maintenance Assist speed up issue diagnosis and optimise building energy use. In product development, AI-assisted coding accelerates development and reduces time to market, and it leverages AI to enhance productivity across HR, legal, sales, and customer service by supporting employees, not replacing them. Modi said the company recently announced what we call the airport ground lighting system. "We started a new line in the Gurugram factory," he added. Honeywell launched its Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) manufacturing facility in Gurugram. The 41,000 sq ft facility produces AGL systems essential for safe airport operations and compliance with global aviation standards. India's rapidly growing aviation industry is projected to invest up to $12 billion and expand from 148 to 220 airports by 2025. Honeywell's Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) solutions, developed and engineered in India, are FAA-certified and comply with ICAO standards. Honeywell's LED-based AGL solutions improve visibility, reduce energy consumption, and offer greater durability and longer lifespan compared to traditional halogen lamps. Modi said that Honeywell teamed up with Navin Fluorine, part of the Padmanabh Mafatlal Group, to manufacture Honeywell's Solstice zd, a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) that has various applications, including blowing agents for foam insulation and refrigeration liquid for chillers. He is also betting big on the newer opportunities in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) space. " The MRO industry in India is valued at $4 billion and growing at 10%–12% annually. Historically, most MRO work was done abroad due to a smaller domestic market and limited incentives for OEMs. That's now changing as scale and demand grow," Modi said.
