On the same lane – Nooa and Harith ready to serve Malaysia with pride
The Harimau Malaya reconvened on Sunday under head coach Peter Cklamovski for a centralised training camp, with two friendlies against Cape Verde on May 29 and a closed-door match on June 3 serving as tune-ups ahead of their must-win Group F encounter at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
The squad are currently in Johor Baru to train for seven days, before they return to Kuala Lumpur for the rest of the camp.
For Finnish-born Noaa, every call-up is a reminder of his growing role in the national team.
'It is always nice to get a call-up. I feel proud and happy to be selected again,' said the 22-year-old Selangor midfielder.
Training in top-class facilities at the Padang Sri Gelam in Johor, Nooa added, has been a bonus as the players look to sharpen their form.
'As a football player, you always want the best conditions. We are happy to be here. It's up to us to prepare well.'
Meanwhile, his club teammate and centreback Harith, who continues to grow into his role in the senior squad, echoed a similar sentiment of readiness and resilience.
'Obviously it's hard - we all know the situation when it comes to off-season. But all the players have come in fit and are prepared to play our roles well,' said Harith.
The 22-year-old, who has made strides at the domestic and international levels, isn't overly concerned with the squad size or who makes the final list.
'Every day I'm just going to train and prove myself to the coach. I'm not going to think about how many players are selected. I just want to perform.'
Malaysia's first friendly opponent, Cape Verde, currently ranked No.72 in the world, promises to be a tough test but Harith believes the backroom staff will be key to navigating the challenge.
'Cape Verde are ranked high, but our coaching staff will do their best. We will raise our game, and hopefully give a strong performance.'
Cklamovski will be assessing his players closely during these friendlies as he finalises his squad for the pivotal showdown against Vietnam, which could be decisive in Malaysia's aim to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
With competition high, preparation thorough, and belief strong within the squad, the Harimau Malaya are intent on using this camp to align mentally and tactically ahead of their biggest challenge yet.

Brunei coach compares challenge in Malaysian football to Scottish Premier League
PETALING JAYA: Brunei coach Jamie McAllister is getting a taste of what the Super League is like, and he admits the challenge is tough. Brunei are in search of their first win in the season after suffering a 3-0 loss against Selangor at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Tuesday, following their 2-2 draw against Police in their season opener on Aug 9. McAllister drew a comparison to the Scottish Premier League, saying the Super League possesses some tough opponents. "It's quite similar to the Scottish Premier League actually. It's physical, and there are a lot of good quality players," said McAllister. The 47-year-old from Glasgow had spent several years playing in Scotland's top flight with Aberdeen, Livingston, and Heart of Midlothian. Having also been at Brunei's helm while they competed in the Singapore Premier League last year, McAllister added that the Super League is a different level, but is nevertheless confident his team can bounce back. "The Super League is also a tougher league than what the Singapore Premier League is. So it's a big challenge for us, and one we're looking forward to," he said. The match saw the Red Giants bag their first win of the season, thanks to Thai international Kevin Deeromram's two goals before half-time and one from Brazilian import Chrigor Moraes in the second half. Despite the win, Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi wants to see a stronger display in the attacking department from his team. "The 3-0 win is a good result, but we had a lot of open opportunities that we didn't take, so that's something we need to work on," said Kinoshi. "Sometimes opportunities only come once in a match. A goal will change the direction of the team." The Red Giants' next match will see them take on Malaysia University in the FA Cup on Saturday, while Brunei play Kuching on the same day.

Duplantis sets new pole vault world record of 6.29m
BUDAPEST: Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis bettered his pole vault world record by a centimetre on Tuesday, clearing 6.29 metres at the athletics meet in Budapest. Sweden's Duplantis broke the world record for the 13th time as he soared over the bar at the second attempt to improve on his 6.28m from Stockholm in June. It was the 25-year-old's third record of 2025 having also cleared 6.27m in Clermont-Ferrand in February. Duplantis notched up his 33rd competition victory, clearing 6.11m on his first attempt to finish ahead of Greece's Emmanouil Karalis (6.02m) and Australia's Kurtis Marschall (5.83m). On his second attempt at 6.29m, Duplantis touched the bar with one leg and his stomach, but it held, and the jump was validated. Since Ukrainian Sergey Bubka became the first athlete to clear 6 metres on July 13, 1985 in Paris, the world record has been broken 26 times, including 12 times by Bubka, 13 times by Duplantis and once by Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie. The US-born Duplantis first broke the world record in 2020 with 6.17m. Duplantis is favourite for a third consecutive outdoor world title in a month's time in Tokyo. On the track Jamaican sprinter Bryan Levell laid down a marker for those championships by posting the third quickest time this year to win the men's 200m. The 21-year-old, who reached the semi-finals at last year's Olympics, headed into the race with a season's best of 20.10. He pulled away from the field in the home straight to win in 19.69 to clock the third best time of the year behind the Americans Noah Lyles (19.63sec) and Kenneth Bednarek (19.67sec). Levell smashed Erriyon Knighton's meeting record by 0.19sec leaving South African veteran Wayde van Niekerk a distant runner-up in 20.07. Olympic bronze medallist Muzala Samukonga held off Jereem Richards and Khaleb McRae to win the men's 400m in a season's best of 44.11 while Laban Kipkorir Chepkwony, who finished fourth at Kenya's World Trials last month, won the men's 800m in a personal best of 1min 42.96sec, breaking David Rudisha's meeting record from 2016. Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce only managed a fourth-placed finish in the women's 100m as Ivorian sprinter Marie-Josee Ta Lou Smith held off Tina Clayton and world 200m champion Shericka Jackson.

Lateness costs Bissouma place in Spurs' Super Cup squad, Solanke fit
UDINE, Italy: Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has been dropped from the squad for Wednesday's Super Cup clash against Paris St Germain due to his tardiness, manager Thomas Frank said. Frank also confirmed that striker Dominic Solanke will be available for the start of the new season despite featuring in only one of Spurs' pre-season friendlies due to an ankle injury. Speaking on Tuesday before the European season curtain-raiser between the Champions League winners and second-tier Europa League champions, Frank said: "Bissouma has been late several times and now this time, it was one too many. "With everything, you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and have consequences. And this was the consequence of that." New arrival Joao Palhinha, on loan from Bayern Munich, could play in place of Ivorian-born Mali international Bissouma, though Tottenham will be without playmaker James Maddison, who faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury. New manager Frank's tenure could start with a gleam of silverware if Spurs manage to defeat European champions PSG, who were beaten by Chelsea in last month's Club World Cup final. The Dane added that a lighter pre-season since Tottenham's Europa League triumph on May 21 could give his comparatively better-rested side an edge over the French team. "We have had a more normal pre-season which is what every coach would prefer. In that way, it can be an advantage. But on the flip side, they have had a long season and played a lot of games recently," Frank said. "It's the right time to face PSG. We are ready. I am 100pct convinced that it will be very super competitive tomorrow. "But of course, over the whole season they are in a better place to perform better. But in a single game, we will be ready." Though Spurs are without former captain Son Heung-min after his move to MLS side LAFC, Frank said their Argentine World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero would be a key figure. "Romero is going to be a very important and experienced player for the team. He is going to be a very, very big player for us tomorrow," he said.
