Brunei coach compares challenge in Malaysian football to Scottish Premier League

The Star19 hours ago
PETALING JAYA: Brunei coach Jamie McAllister is getting a taste of what the Super League is like, and he admits the challenge is tough.
Brunei are in search of their first win in the season after suffering a 3-0 loss against Selangor at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Tuesday, following their 2-2 draw against Police in their season opener on Aug 9.
McAllister drew a comparison to the Scottish Premier League, saying the Super League possesses some tough opponents.
"It's quite similar to the Scottish Premier League actually. It's physical, and there are a lot of good quality players," said McAllister.
The 47-year-old from Glasgow had spent several years playing in Scotland's top flight with Aberdeen, Livingston, and Heart of Midlothian.
Having also been at Brunei's helm while they competed in the Singapore Premier League last year, McAllister added that the Super League is a different level, but is nevertheless confident his team can bounce back.
"The Super League is also a tougher league than what the Singapore Premier League is. So it's a big challenge for us, and one we're looking forward to," he said.
The match saw the Red Giants bag their first win of the season, thanks to Thai international Kevin Deeromram's two goals before half-time and one from Brazilian import Chrigor Moraes in the second half.
Despite the win, Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi wants to see a stronger display in the attacking department from his team.
"The 3-0 win is a good result, but we had a lot of open opportunities that we didn't take, so that's something we need to work on," said Kinoshi.
"Sometimes opportunities only come once in a match. A goal will change the direction of the team."
The Red Giants' next match will see them take on Malaysia University in the FA Cup on Saturday, while Brunei play Kuching on the same day.

KL City frustrated by 10-man Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR: Ten-man Sabah delivered a late sucker punch to hold Kuala Lumpur City to a 1-1 draw in a Super League match at the KLFA Stadium on Wednesday. Both teams played end-to- end football before disaster struck visitors Sabah, who were reduced to 10 men after Dean Pelekanos was shown a red card at the end of the first half. Referee Zamzaidi Katimin sent off Pelekanos for a rough tackle on Ryan Lambert after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check. The City Boys used their numerical advantage well in the second half and broke the deadlock through Declan Lambert's deflected effort (64th minute). However, Sabah had the last laugh after Gabriel Peres' header deep into added time earned them the draw. In another match, Terengganu had to dig deep to hold Police to a 2-2 draw at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak. The Cops took the lead through Bernard Doumbia's brace (13th and 57th), while the Turtles' goals were scored by Azam Azmi Murad (63rd) and Yann Mabella (90th). At the Hang Jebat Stadium, hosts Melaka were held to a 1-1 draw by Penang. The match saw the Panthers taking the lead through Dylan Wenzel-Halls (29th) before Melaka equalised through Juan Silva (70th).

Melaka FC struggles with team rhythm in Super League opener

MELAKA FC is still searching for their rhythm after a 1-1 draw against Penang FC in their 2025-2026 Super League opener at Hang Jebat Stadium. Head coach K. Devan acknowledged that the team's new foreign signings need time to gel with the revamped squad. He noted that the first-half performance lacked aggression, allowing Penang FC too much attacking space. Defensive lapses and ineffective counterattacks also contributed to the opponents creating chances. 'In the first half, we could have played better but were less aggressive and gave Penang FC too much space,' Devan said. He added that communication issues with the Brazilian players and inexperience in the Super League were key factors. Most local players in the squad came from the A1 League, adding to the adjustment challenges. Penang FC took the lead in the 28th minute through Dylan Christopher Charles Wenzek Halls' header. Melaka FC equalised in the 69th minute thanks to Brazilian striker Juan Douglas Teles Da Silva. Devan pointed out that the team lacked an on-field leader, a problem he hopes to resolve soon. Despite improvements in the second half, he stressed the need to build confidence and adapt to his tactics. 'They have only trained together for less than a month,' Devan said. The two teams will face off again this Sunday in the FA Cup round of 16 at Hang Jebat Stadium. Devan emphasised the importance of winning at home to stay competitive. Penang FC coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail admitted his team is improving but needs to address weaknesses. 'We need our first win in either the Super League or FA Cup to boost morale,' he said. The upcoming FA Cup match will test both teams' ability to adjust their strategies. - Bernama

KL City coach Vidakovic frustrated by late Sabah equaliser in Super League

KUALA Lumpur City FC head coach Risto Vidakovic described his team's 1-1 draw against Sabah FC as a tough result to accept after conceding a late equaliser. The match, held at Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras, saw KL City dominate the second half but fail to secure victory. Vidakovic said his side controlled play after halftime and created multiple chances to win. 'The result is a draw but it's the worst feeling you can have when you concede a goal especially after controlling almost the entire second half,' he told reporters. He refused to single out any player for Sabah's stoppage-time leveller, instead citing fatigue and a disrupted pre-season. 'We are not 100% physically, not at the top. I think we played a good game and we have to continue growing,' he added. The coach urged fans to remain patient as new signings adapt to his tactics. KL City took the lead in the 65th minute through an own goal by Sabah's Dane Ingham. Sabah, reduced to 10 men after Dean Pelekanos' red card, equalised via Gabriel Peres' header in added time. KL City now sit third in the Super League with four points ahead of their next match against Penang FC. - Bernama
