Amazon Music strikes a new chord with podcasts, Prime and Alexa to stand apart

Audio streaming business continues to struggle in India, as most platforms offer similar music catalogues, lacking in novelty or innovation and failing to drive subscriptions. Amid a sea of soundalike tracks, Amazon Music is striking a new chord to soar above the noise. It is following a three-pronged approach to stay more relevant than the others. It is offering a completely ad-free experience that doesn't charge customers separately and is part of the Amazon Prime bundle along with video and shopping, a top company official said. It is also producing a range of exclusive podcasts and video content with artistes in addition to songs. And finally, it aims to benefit from the Amazon consumer tech ecosystem, including Fire TVs and Alexa devices that can help improve the listening experience. 'For us, the differentiation (from other players) comes from the fact that we are an ad-free, on-demand product. We're not charging customers separately because it's all within the Prime bundle," Rishabh Gupta, country head, Amazon Music India, said in an interview. 'On the content side, we do a lot of exclusive podcasts and bring fans closer to artistes via video IPs (intellectual properties)." As far as local languages go, the platform hosts content in 20-plus languages, with Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu and Punjabi forming the top five, Gupta added. On the Android app, the user interface supports nine languages. The platform that has seen engagement surge since the pandemic. Gupta said that podcast customer listening hours are up 22% over 2024. While Hindi remains its most streamed language with an 84% customer spread, followed by English and Punjabi at 63%, Tamil and Telugu are witnessing strong growth, too, driven by curated regional playlists and improved discovery features. Gupta said the service is fully committed to being seen as a part of the Prime bundle and has witnessed great traction among consumers, in turn, helping the Prime program (including video and shopping) significantly. 'People who use multiple benefits have been some of our longest-serving Prime customers," Gupta added. As a DSP (distribution service provider), Gupta said the platform doesn't necessarily dictate as to what content needs to be produced. However, besides the music catalogue that comes via acquisitions from both from the film and non-film genres, Amazon Music is creating some of its own video and editorial IPs. This shoulder content, ranging from 2 to 20-minute videos, touches upon themes like what may be going on in an artiste's mind before going on stage at a concert, and so on. Further, while the platform is open to all kinds of podcasts, it targets some exclusive and early access deals as well. Podcast content now makes up approximately 15% of total user engagement on the platform. To be sure, the audio business in India, across regions and languages, is facing its share of challenges. Film producers, independent artistes and music labels are grappling with the shutdown of multiple streaming platforms, including Airtel's Wynk, ByteDance's Resso and Hungama Music, which failed to crack the paid subscription model. Others, such as Spotify, have halved per-stream payouts. Despite a rich musical heritage and wide consumption across the country, the Indian music segment declined by 2% to ₹5,300 crore in 2024, according to the annual Ficci EY media and entertainment report. Digital revenue, the biggest chunk of the segment, fell from 68% of total revenue in 2023 to 62.4% last year. The Indian music industry recorded 192 million free streamers in 2024, as compared to 12 million paid streamers, reaffirming that platforms have been forced to depend heavily on advertising revenue. However, Gupta is optimistic. 'India is an evolving country and a growing market for all kinds of businesses, including music, which is currently at the centre stage of the art and culture landscape. The space is constantly evolving with developments in technology and marketing, not to mention a continuous endeavour to grow bigger and better," Gupta said. 'As a country, we've advanced exponentially—just see how easy it is to make digital payments today and compare it to how it was three to four years back when we were all cash dependent. And while this has nothing to do with the music industry, it has aided the subscription economy, not just for the music industry, but for video-on-demand and everything else. So, every few years we see a new addition, mostly a better one, to the existing norms and processes that suddenly drive some sort of hockey stick growth for the industry, and I think for music, it's probably just around the corner," he added.

PCMC to post draft DP in Marathi for wider reach deadline to send views long over

Pune: The state govt has told Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to translate its draft Development Plan (DP) into Marathi and republish it online for better public understanding. The original draft, published in English this May, was open for public suggestions and objections until July 14. The demand for a Marathi version came from Maval's Shiv Sena MP Shrirang Barne who wrote to the state govt last month stating that many residents were unable to submit their objections to the proposed reservations mentioned in the draft due to lack of understanding of English. In response to his letter on July 6, the state govt, on July 30, instructed PCMC to act on the request, citing instructions from the office of deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde. He clarified that the statutory timeline will remain unaffected and the draft will not be reopened for additional suggestions or objections. Barne, in his letter to Shinde, said, "As per section 4(2) of Maharashtra Official Languages Act 2021, all municipal corporations and councils in the state should do their administrative works in Marathi. The Shiv Sena MP added that govt should intervene to publish the draft in Marathi. The municipal corporation received over 49,500 suggestions and objections from citizens. The civic body has already initiated the process of segregating them to prepare for final hearings which will be conducted by the state govt-appointed committee. As per the standard procedure, the committee will prepare a final version of the draft after hearings, which will be sent to the state govt for final approval. Dhanaji Yelkar, convenor of Swabhimani Ghar Bachao Movement, formed to oppose the proposed HCMTR project in the draft, said there is no point in translating the draft when people cannot object to it. Sanjeevan Sangle, chairman of Chikhali Moshi Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Society Federation, said the municipal corporation should allow citizens to file their objections after the translated draft is published. A senior civic official said that DP drafts are prepared in English due to the content's technical nature, and no previous attempts were made to publish them in Marathi. Several municipal corporations in the state recently published their drafts, and all of them were in English, he said. The officer further clarified that there are no legal mandates to prepare these drafts in Marathi. MLAs and MLCs from Pimpri Chinchwad voiced strong objections to the reservations listed in the draft Development Plan (DP), demanding its cancellation. They also raised the issue during the recently concluded assembly session, alleging that the committee responsible for drafting the plan imposed reservations on many residential structures. BJP MLA from Chinchwad Shankar Jagtap said, "The whole draft was prepared using wrong methods as reservations were also proposed on properties where building permissions were granted by the municipal corporation." Another BJP MLA Mahesh Landge said at least 850 reservations from the old DP were again mentioned in the draft. "The civic body has put reservations on many religious temples, which must be cancelled, and the hearings of all the objections must happen in an unbiased manner," he said. Several religious groups also expressed concerns over the proposed reservation for a slaughterhouse in Moshi, located about 4 km from Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj temple in Alandi. In response to the public outcry, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, during a public event last month, announced that this reservation would be withdrawn. Minister of state for urban development, Madhuri Misal assured the legislators that the draft could be cancelled by the CM if it was found beyond rectification. However, she said that it would be wrong to cancel it before conducting hearings on the objections. "Govt will ensure that there is no injustice to anyone when the final draft is approved," she added. Head: Area covers 173.24 sqkm Draft DP for PCMC was published online for citizens on May 16 Citizens had time until July 14 to file their suggestions and objections Over 49,500 suggestions and objections were received from citizens on the draft The draft DP covers a 173.24 sqkm area and was prepared keeping in mind the projected population (Pimpri Chinchwad) of 42 lakh in 2031 and 61 lakh by 2041 What Next? PCMC will segregate the suggestions and objections to avoid duplication Similar demands will be clubbed, and the final list will be kept for hearings A state govt-appointed committee will conduct public hearings on these matters The final draft will be sent to the chief minister for approval Instead of raising the language issue, the MP should have demanded cancellation of the draft. He realised it very late, and it is just an attempt to show that he is doing something for people. If he wanted to, he would have approached his party chief Eknath Shinde, who leads the urban development ministry, and got the draft cancelled Dhanaji Yelkar I Convenor, Swabhimani Ghar Bachao Movement Many people who were unable to understand Marathi failed to file their objections, and they should be given the opportunity as civic bodies are run for them. India dismisses Fake News claiming govt reviewing list of US goods exempted from tariffs

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) fact-checking handle on Sunday dismissed a fake news which claimed that the Indian government is currently reviewing a list of US-made products exempted from the tariffs after US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs plus a penalty on domestic exports to America from August 1. An X handle named 'China in English' claimed 'The Indian government begins reviewing the list of U.S. products exempted from tariffs… and declares: No privilege without mutual respect' However, MEA FactCheck, the official social media handle of the fact-checking arm of the Ministry of External Affairs on the social media platform X, said, "This is FAKE News!.' MEA FactCheck on Sunday, 3 August 2025, refuted the post on U.S. products exempted from tariffs on the social media platform X. The fact-checking account also debunked another 'fake news' report floating around social media in order to prevent the spread of further disinformation amongst the people through the platforms. MEA FactCheck also refuted the claim that the government is 'considering suspending or reviewing certain bilateral agreements with the United States if hostile economic policies continue.' 'Fake News Alert! This is FAKE News. No such statement made,' according to the post from MEA on Sunday, highlighting that no such statement was made by the Indian government. Last week, US President Donald Trump imposed 25% tariff on all imports from India along with some additional undisclosed penalties. Trump cited the Asian nation's high tariff rates and its relationship with Russia as being the 'vast majority' buyer of military equipment and crude oil. Later, Trump called out both India and Russia as 'dead economies' amid the ongoing trade talks with India. In a suo motu statement in both the houses of Parliament, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said said, the government is examining the implications of these tariffs and is engaged with all stakeholders including exporters and industry for taking feedback of their assessment of the situation. "The government attaches the utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs and all sections of industry. We will take all necessary steps to secure and advance our national interest," he said. The commerce minister also said that in just over a decade, India has rapidly transformed from being one of the fragile five to the fastest growing major economy in the world and it is also widely expected that India will become the third largest economy in a few years.
