Calls for Roosters to axe Test player after 'try of the decade' completely ruined
Sydney Roosters fans are fuming over the team's defence and poor ball-handling after Mark Nawaqanitawase scored one of the greatest tries in NRL history, only for it to count for nothing. And Test player Victor Radley has come under scrutiny for some bizarre defensive efforts late in Friday night's game against the Bulldogs.
Nawaqanitawase scored what many are calling the 'try of the decade' to give the Roosters a 20-18 lead against the ladder-leading Bulldogs. The former Wallabies winger somehow managed to hop on one foot and then chip the ball into the in-goal, before running out and back into play to ground the ball.
NRL fans and commentators were blown away by the astonishing effort, with many describing it as one of the greatest individual tries they've ever seen. "That could be the try of the decade," commentator Mat Thompson said on Channel 9. Andrew Johns said: "No way. That was freakish."
Unfortunately for Nawaqanitawase and the Roosters, it ultimately counted for nothing because the Bulldogs came back from 14-0 down to win 24-20. The Roosters only had themselves to blame, making a staggering 17 errors and completing at just 67 per cent. Despite bagging a double, Nawaqanitawase made six errors of his own and fumbled a number of high balls that gifted the Bulldogs good field position.
The Bulldogs handled the slippery conditions much better, completing at 81 per cent. The Roosters handed the Bulldogs a gift of a try in the second half when Egan Butcher spilled the ball coming out from his line and watched Toby Sexton race away to make it 14-12.
The Dogs then scored through Bronson Xerri in the 62nd minute and Matt Burton in the 73rd, with Burton's try proving the match-winner. But the efforts of Radley on the last two tries raised more than a few eyebrows.
The England Test player was in perfect position to tackle both Xerri and Burton, but bizarrely he didn't even make an attempt on either. Radley might have been carrying an injury that prevented him from pushing off one leg, but Xerri and Burton both ran straight past him as the back-rower didn't even attempt a tackle.
Fans were quick to call Radley out on social media, with some questioning whether he's still up to first-grade standard. There were calls for coach Trent Robinson to give Radley a stint in reserve grade and hand more playing time to some of the club's younger forwards.
Great tackle number 12, pffft

It's like he doesn't want to defend in the middle

Oh man Victor Radley is a reserve grader these days
— Wayne Pasterfield (@wpasterfield) May 16, 2025
That's the second time Victor Radley has been completely shat on by a play up the middle and let a player walk through to score. #NRLBulldogsRoosters

Victor Radley embarrassed twice with blokes using footwork going inside him.
— Jo (@SmokinJo21) May 16, 2025
Agree errors destroyed us. In the end it cost us the game. Middle defence has been embarrassing all year, too many soft tries and nothing has improved. Didn't have a Player that could win us the game at the death. Very disappointing loss.
— Tones (@Tones68) May 16, 2025
In the end, Radley and the Roosters were only in that situation because of their atrocious ball-handling. Reporter Lachlan Jeffery wrote on social media: "So many errors by the Roosters. Not winning footy games with 64% completions and 18 errors (sic). Middle defence also embarrassing."
Daily Telegraph columnist 'The Oracle' wrote: "Hoping that one day…..the Roosters will address their diabolical error rate which has plagued this club for over a decade. The Roosters completion rate has been the worst of any team, year after year."

Speaking after the game, Robinson said Nawaqanitawase was hurting after his error-laden game. The winger refused to do any media interviews and left Accor Stadium soon after the match.
"The cost is really high of those (errors)," Robinson said. "He is a really good catcher, I think there is too much effort in the jump. It's not through lack of technique ... It's an easy fix. But those hurt tonight. I can understand Mark is hurting in there."

Alabama Going Up Against SEC Rival For 4-Star EDGE
Alabama Going Up Against SEC Rival For 4-Star EDGE originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Alabama Crimson Tide just had their first nine-win season since 1993 and are looking to return to competing for national titles. Advertisement Head coach Kalen DeBoer is aware that it would not be possible without consistent recruiting. On Wednesday, On3's Hayes Fawcett reported that four-star edge rusher Khamari Brooks was down to Alabama and the Georgia Bulldogs. The Crimson Tide had an official visit with Brooks on June 6. Before that, he took one with Georgia on May 30. The Bulldogs have the luxury of recruiting Brooks in their home state. He is a product of North Oconee High School in Bogart, Georgia. Before his recent announcement, the Texas Longhorns, USC Trojans and Georgia Tech Yellowjackets were also in the running for Brooks. Advertisement Even though Brooks is picking Alabama or Georgia, the Bulldogs are still the favorite in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. It gives the Bulldogs a 52.6% chance to land him. The Crimson Tide are given a 25% chance. Alabama is still hot on the recruiting trail after being named a finalist for safety Jireh Edwards. DeBoer is not the head coach of the Washington Huskies anymore but used his West Coast connections to help land inside offensive lineman Samuelu Utu. The Crimson Tide have six commits from the 2026 class. DeBoer's class is highlighted by five-star corner Jorden Edmonds, four-star corner Zyan Gibson and four-star edge rusher Jamarion Matthews. 'Hasn't progressed': Laurie Daley's worrying admission about Blues player for Game 2
NSW coach Laurie Daley has provided a worrying update on Blues winger Brian To'o after admitting his recovery from a hamstring niggle has not progressed as much as medical staff had hoped. Bulldogs winger Jacob Kiraz was called into Blues camp on Wednesday as a potential replacement for To'o if the Panthers flyer is unable to recover in time for Game 2 in Perth, where NSW will hope to wrap up the series with another win. To'o has already had two hamstring strains this year and missed the start of the NRL season for Penrith. And while Daley insists the injury hasn't 'flared up' and he remains hopeful the winger will be right to face the Maroons in Game 2, the NSW coach did concede on Thursday morning that the Blues' medical team were concerned the hamstring niggle had not improved as quickly as they expected. "We thought earlier in the week Brian would be OK ... but it just hasn't progressed as far as what we need him to," Daley told Nine's Today Show. "We're still confident that he'll be OK, but we thought it'd be better off to have Jacob come here on standby if Brian doesn't get up. "With hamstrings, they're tricky things. You want to make sure they're 100 per cent right to go. You can get through training. But then, of course game night, you don't want to injure yourself and then put the team at risk. We're just going to have to weigh up all those factors towards the end of the week." Brian To'o is dealing with a hamstring niggle - is expected to play in Origin 2 but NSW have called Jacob Kiraz into camp as cover (via @Danny_Weidler)To'o has already suffered 2 hamstring strains this season - a call on his Origin fitness expected before Kiraz's Round 15 game. — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) June 11, 2025 Fellow NSW winger Zac Lomax was more defiant about the prospects of To'o playing in Game 2, and backed the Blues' medical team to ensure he would be good to go in just under a week. "He's obviously a professional and he's going to get the job done," Lomax told Fox League on Wednesday night. "And we've got the best staff in the world here with us so I think he'll sit out tomorrow's training session just in regards to loads. "But on the flip side it gives someone like Jacob Kiraz a big boost to be able to come in and train with the squad. It's massive for him too, he's been playing unbelievable footy there at the Bulldogs. But for us we need to get 'Bizza' (To'o) right and I think that's him having the day off tomorrow and he'll be flying by Wednesday night." To'o scored one try and ran for a game-high 225 metres in a standout performance for the Blues in Game 1 at Suncorp Stadium. His tackle-busting ability and willingness to tough carries from the back has frequently helped the Blues get out of their own half and dominate field position against the Maroons and it would be a big blow if To'o was ruled out. Fortunately for NSW, Kiraz offers many of those same qualities and despite being less of a try-scoring weapon than To'o, he is more of an aerial threat and has an offloading game that could really hurt Queensland. Daley confirmed the Bulldogs star was training with the Blues squad for the first time on Thursday morning. Bulldogs teammate and Blues 18th man Matt Burton is another option to come into the NSW starting side if To'o is ruled out.
